Permission plus!

Finally! Permission to relax and enjoy with real suggestions for keeping priorities clear, making good choices and creating space in the day, week, month to really DO things with the kids and the family. I love it! With summer plans taking control of my family's life, I discovered Ms. Doe's suggestions just in time. Now our summer will be full (busy) but enjoyable and rewarding (balanced). We all sat down and read portions together and used Ms. Doe's strategies and ideas to REALLY plan and think about our summer! Thanks to her, we look forward to a fun, new and exciting vacation season and the kids will honestly have something to talk about when they return to school in the fall! I will too!

Mimi helps little miracles happen.

This book pushes past the "yes, but's" so gently, it doesn't hurt a bit. Fresh perspectives about how to interpret what is going on and practical suggestions about things to do (and not do), make this a virtual parent's handbook for sanity.
As a psychotherapist and author (Embracing Fear, HarperSanFrancisco 2002) I have made good use of two contrasting metaphors for parenting that have always made sense to me. One is that children are clay and parents sculptors, assigned the job of molding the clay into what they believe is best. The other metaphor is that children are seeds, and parents gardeners, with the job of caring for the enviornment surrounding the seeds so that they can grow into whatever they are meant to be. Mimi Doe is a master gardener with a wonderful ability to teach other gardeners.

Disappointing

I had rather high hopes for this books but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. It had a lot of promise-- starting with a love affair between Maria Lucas and Colonel Fitzwilliam and the secret past of Lady Catherine's late husband, Sir Lewis. These plots just fizzled and turned out to be annoying. I also thought that since Lady Catherine and Mr. Collins were in the book it would have been entertaining, but I was wrong. Aiken didn't know how to play characters like that. Mr. Collins had a brief cameo and Lady Catherine wasn't nearly wonderfully awful as Austen would her out to be. I don't suggest this book. Not at all. If you have a compulsion to read it,get it from the library and save your money.

I love Jane Austen!

Joan Aiken is NO Jane Austen! The title is unconsequential to the plot, there are aspects of life (i.e. homosexuality) which Miss Austen would never have included in a novel, and the ending feels as though she had met her maximum page numbers and was simply trying to quickly close things out. I've read "Jane Fairfax" and thought this would be as well done; more's the pity for me to have wasted my time here.

Ludricrous and unsatisfactory

This novel was a big disappointment to me. It began with great promise but then fell apart at its midpoint. I can only conclude that Ms. Aikens was writing under a deadline because the resolution of the various plot lines in the novel's concluding scene is ludicrous and unsatisfactory. So save your money for another book.

The leader must fight not only enemies but his (and in the rare instance her) own tendency toward indolence and contentment, for these will bring ruin to any endeavor. A leader must be of ``manly vigor''; he must be virtuous, possessing the military values of prudent judgment, alertness to changing conditions, bravery, courage, total commitment to mission; only when the leader is virtuous in this way will the people follow him. While there have been strong female leaders, such as Margaret Thatcher, on the whole women cannot achieve virtue for they lack the ``physical wherewithal and the passionate desire to achieve'' military glory. (Women are also a temptation to men while they are busy trying to lead.) One might then justly call a weak state with a feeble leader ``effeminate.'' And there is no better example of this, according to the author, than the US under Clinton, whose personal corruption and lack of military virtue endanger us all. The military has become, under Clinton, a place for bizarre social experiments, such as men and women serving together aboard ship. What Ledeen thinks we all need, then, is a sort of virtue Viagra, and this exemplifies his simplistic and decidedly dated answers to the complex problems of politics. An effective guide for strong leadership

Even after half a millennium, Machiavelli's advice to leaders is as contemporary as it was then. He goes to the essence of power and the means to achieve it. The struggle for power begins with the attempt to carve out a zone of freedom from others and continues with the extension of domination over others. First comes the fight for survival or for freedom from domination, then comes the fight for ambition, which is so powerful in humans that no matter what rank they rise it never abandons them. For Machiavelli the tools for discipline is to have a well armed force and laws enforced. Without them a nation is enfeebled and the survival of the state is mutually threatened. In present times the balance of the two distinguishes a successful state. There are many under developed states, which are facing extinction due to non-enforcement of the laws, as corruption takes precedence.
At times it is necessary for a good man to perform evil acts, even to accomplish a honourable result. Consider the case of Turkey in the late 1970's when the nation was inundated by a terrorist wave without precedent. The feeble multi party democracy was unable to deal with the excruciating terror. The military seized power; in the next two years 50,000 people were arrested on charges of corruption. Turkey was denounced for its repression and violation of human rights. In all evil methods were used to achieve a noble task. In the mid 50's-60's, human rights were sacrificed in places like Malaysia, Taiwan, and Singapore by an authoritative rule to ensure the progress of the nation.
Ledeen's "Machiavelli on modern leadership" is an account of Machiavelli's beliefs tied with situations in present times.

Unlimited applications to every "boss" you've ever known!

Machiavelli on Modern Leadership by Michael A. Ledeen is one of the most entertaining and instructive books I've read. It's one that I am going to keep at hand because I am sure to be going back to it time and again. It's also the perfect book to buy for your friends-and your enemies. Ledeen serves up Machiavelli's thoughts on the makings of a leader in easily digestible morsels, garnished with wonderful (good and bad) examples from the modern world of politics, government, military life, business, sports, religion. He has so much fun at this game that you inevitably start playing along with him, applying Machiavelli's rules to all the "bosses" you've ever known in your own life. With this book in hand you can also gain a new perspective on all the political figures you have learned to love and hate. Many world figures have already been dispassionately dissected for you by Ledeen, but you will find yourself looking around for others on whom Machiavelli would have conferred his seal of approval or disapproval.
Looking back over my own life, I found many classic Machiavellian examples, especially of the "bad" prince, in that terrible Communist world I left behind in 1978. Machiavelli tells us that, because men are more disposed toward evil than toward good, the supreme leaders are bloody minded; that is exactly how Nikita Khrushchev, one of my "supreme bosses" from my other life, looked to me, both when he was sober and when he was drunk. The Machiavellian man uses change and flexibility to stay on top, but the Soviet bloc leaders I knew were increasingly dogmatic and inflexible, culminating with Leonid Brezhnev, who acted like a mechanical puppet (as does Boris Yeltsin today). Or take another of Ledeen's points, in which Machiavelli recommends avoiding the mistake of believing that all men are the same, no matter where they may live. When given a private tour of Macy's department store in New York, my former Romanian boss, Nicolae Ceausescu, believed the displays had been specially set up for him, because that was what he would have done to impress a foreign visitor to his Communist Romania. Today, when Yeltsin appointed the bloody KGB general Sergey Stepashin as prime minister of Russia, I pondered the fact that in the last four centuries all Russian/Soviet tsars have turned to their political police to defend their thrones. When I looked into Ledeen's book to see if Machiavelli also had an answer for that, there it was: "Machiavelli very badly wants to believe that a great leader can almost always be confident about his ability to win, provided that he has studied history carefully."
During the 20 years that Michael Ledeen has been my friend, we have often worked together to fight the evils of Soviet Communism-and today's crypto-Communism-by using Machiavelli's weapons, and I have always been sure he would some day write the ultimate contemporary book on Machiavelli. Ledeen has so admired this eminent mind of the Italian Renaissance that he has himself become the perfect American Machiavelli.

Good Read, But Check the Facts

When you read a book like this, it can be judged by the facts you know to be true or false. The author made serious factual error regarding that Bill Gates invent the BASIC programming language (like Al Gore saying he invented the Internet). His comment, "...Mata Hari have famously been exceptional espionage agents", is grossly wrong. Mata (Margaretha Gertrude Mac Leod) was a prostitute who worked for the Germans and the French. She did a bad job at it, both sides knew she was a double agent and in the end the French shot her. The rest was myth.

On the other hand, the commandment "thou shalt not murder" is correct versus "thou shalt not kill". The Hebrew words for murder and kill are only slightly different, but absolutely unambiguous. And unlike the New Testament, the Torah has not gone through tons of alterations. There are other facts that are easily verified or refuted.

So why read it? If you read "The Prince", you better know your history (but I strongly recommend you read it first). Michael A. Ledeen uses modern day examples to help illustrate Machiavelli's insights. This should make it much easier to understand. But if you wonder about the facts behind the example, do check it out yourself and don't take the authors words as Gospel.

As an essayist, Susan Sontag has tended to stick pretty rigorously to the modern age, whether she's anatomizing the wild world of camp or roasting Leni Riefenstahl over the coals. But in her fiction--particularly in such fin-de-siècle productions as The Volcano Lover--she's clearly felt the allure of the past. And In America, which chronicles the travails of a late-19th-century actress, shows Sontag in top time-traveling form. What's more, it illuminates her motives for glancing so persistently backward. "Almost everything good seems located in the past," she notes in a first-person prologue, "perhaps that's an illusion, but I feel nostalgic for every era before I was born; and one is freer of modern inhibitions, perhaps because one bears no responsibility for the past." There's nothing, it seems, like the age of innocence--a golden moment before we moderns had the curse of self-consciousness brought down on our heads.

It's ironic, then, that In America revolves around a regular paragon of self-consciousness: a brilliant Polish diva named Maryna Zalezowska. The year is 1876, and this Bernhardt-like figure has decided to abandon the stage and establish a utopian commune in (you guessed it) California. Not exactly a logical career move, is it? Yet this journey to America does involve a major feat of self-reinvention, for which Maryna may be uniquely qualified. Writing a letter home from the brave new world of Hoboken, New Jersey, she argues against the idea that "life cannot be restarted, that we are all prisoners of whatever we have become." And once she arrives in Anaheim with her husband, child, and fellow utopians in tow, she does seem to slough off the skin of her older, European self. She is now that exotic creature, an American, existing in an equally exotic landscape--which happens to elicit some of Sontag's most lyrical prose: They had never felt as erect, as vertical, their skin brushed by the hot Santa Ana wind, their ears lulled by the oddly intrusive sound of their own footfalls.... Hardly anything is near anything here: those slouching braided sentinels, the yucca trees, and bouquets of drooping spears, the agaves, and the squat clusters of prickly pears, all so widely spaced, so unresembling--and nothing had to do with anything else. Like every utopia in human history, Maryna's is a failure. Following its collapse, she is moved to return to the theater--but as an American, now, plugged securely into the middlebrow culture of her adopted land. The rest of the novel charts her brilliant career among the philistines, along with a number of heated erotic detours.

Given its subject matter, Sontag's novel is oddly anti-dramatic: she juggles a half-dozen narrative strategies but seldom allows us to sink our teeth into a prolonged scene. Yet she delivers a great many other riches by way of compensation. Her take on the perils and pleasures of expatriation is worthy of Henry James (who actually makes a cameo appearance, assuring Maryna that England and America will morph into "one big Anglo-Saxon total.") And she includes a superbly entertaining portrait of theatrical life, culminating in a virtuoso monologue from Edwin Booth that suggests a Gilded Age Samuel Beckett. As always, there is the pleasure of watching the author's formidable intelligence at work, immersing us in the details of a character or landscape and then surfacing for a deep draught of abstraction. Perhaps Sontag is too cerebral to ever produce a straightforward work of fiction. But this time around, anyway, she brings both brains and literary brawn to bear on what Henry James himself called "the complex fate" of being an American. --James Marcus

As she did in The Volcano Lover, Sontag crafts a novel of ideas in which real figures from the past enact their lives against an assiduously researched, almost cinematically vivid background. Here again her signal achievement is to offer fresh and insightful commentary on the social and cultural currents of an age, with a distinctive understanding of how historical events forged character and destiny. If the story of renowned Polish actress Maryna Zalewska cannot compare in drama to that of Admiral Nelson and the Hamiltons (as a protagonist, Maryna remains somewhat shadowy and elusive), Sontag succeeds in conveying how the political and intellectual atmosphere of Poland and the U.S. in the late 19th century affected her heroine's life. Beautiful, famous and restless at 35, Maryna decides to leave her native land, suffering under Russian occupation. She convinces her husband, Count Bogdan Demboski, her would-be lover, journalist Ryszard Kierul, and various other members of the Warsaw intelligentsia to emigrate to America, where, influenced by Fourier's social philosophy, they will establish an experimental farm commune in southern California. Predictably, the community fails to prosper and falls into debt; idealism gives way to disillusionment; Maryna decides to resume her career, achieving immediate acclaim; and the romantic triangle moves to a new stage. Meanwhile, Sontag makes meaningful associations between a woman's need for freedom and independence, a nation's suffering under a conqueror's heel and the common human quest for "newness, emptiness, pastlessness... this dream of turning life into pure future" that colored many immigrants' views of America. She leads readers into the book via a long, breathless, one-paragraph prologue, narrated as if in a fever dream; indeed, it is not until many pages into the novel that the date and the geographical setting are established. Exemplary at imagining an actor's needs, impulses and sources of inspiration, Sontag also conveys the theatrical world of the time (East Lynne was the most popular play; Sarah Bernhardt reigned in Paris) almost palpably. There are few dramatic peaks and valleys in Maryna's story, but the historical backdrop--with pithy and evocative descriptions of American cities at the turn of the last century, cameo portraits of salty frontier types, and snippets of Western lore--supplies the vigor that the main plot often fails to engender. While this book does not exert the passionate energy of The Volcano Lover, it is a provocative study of a woman's life and the historical setting in which she moves. Rich in ideas, disappointing in ending

Reading this book is like having someone snatch a particularly juicy feast out from under your nose before you've had the chance to enjoy it properly. "In America" is a rich tale to savor, but slices of it are underdone and it comes to such an abrupt end that the reader is left wondering what happened to the final course.
Starting the novel with an awkward Zero chapter--meant, I think, to better explain the characters--Susan Sontag tells of Maryna Zalezowska, the leading Polish actress of the 1870s, who comes to California to open a utopian commune near Anaheim. The commune quickly fails, and Zalezowska begins the task of reinventing herself as an American actress. She does this brilliantly, and begins a new career traveling across the United States in a private train car performing everything from Shakespeare to the 19th century's favorite sob-fest, "East Lynne."
The sections on how an actress of that age learned and prepared roles, and the insight into nuts-and-bolts workings of 19th century American theater are marvelous, as are the stunning monologue chapters expressing the three main characters' internal and external struggles (the book ends with a devastating monologue by Edwin Booth that is one terrific piece of writing). On the other hand some of the characters are barely sketched and "In America" simply ends. There's no resolution, no sense that the last page of the book should be the last page-in fact, you'll probably turn that page expecting a concluding chapter. And you'll feel cheated.
There's something mean about allowing readers such access to characters' minds and emotions and then chopping the narrative when there is obviously so much to come. Is it that Sontag can't sustain the narrative? The novel reads that way.
It is hard to know how many stars to give "In America." I found much of it fascinating, but felt slighted by the lack of resolution. Yes, even though I know that the real-life model for Maryna, Helena Modjeska, had a long and successful career before retiring to the remote Southern California canyon that still bears her name, I feel robbed of the chance to follow her there, guided by Sontag's masterly hand.

my favorite Haddam novel

First, a rebuttal to the two reviewers who hated this novel. I read mystery novels for fun. If I do not like a novel, I don't even bother to finish reading it. Why waste time allocated to having fun on something that is just not fun for you? Apparently two of the reviewers did just that..and then wrote scathing reviews of the novel that both include personal attacks on the author. Take their reviews with a grain of salt -- no, make that 6 cups of salt.
This novel is about the tormenting of classmates that goes on in schools -- a very timely topic considering recent school violence such as that at Columbine. At the core of this novel are the emotional scars left on both the victims and the perpetrators of school bullying. I found this book deeply moving. There is less humor in this novel than in some of Haddam's other Gregor Demarkian novels, but there is more humanity.

Outstanding.

I'm not sure how long Jane Haddam can continue surpassing herself, but she's done it this time. I was convinced that True Believers was her best, but then I read Somebody Else's Music.
Gregor Demarkian is pulled into a 30-year old murder by an acquaintance of Bennis'. What he discovers is that the murder, and the other events of the evening when it occurred, still color current events and everyday life for those who were involved.
Liz Toliver, the acquaintance, is going back to her hometown after a 30-year absence to take care of her aging mother. It seems that her schoolmates from all those years ago have been awaiting her reappearance, and it's clear that for quite a few of them, high school never really ended.
High school is a strange phenomenon in the US, and Somebody Else's Music brings us inside that strangeness, and lets us see just how devastating it can be for some students. The way the murders play out, and the way the interactions between the characters play out, are rooted in their high school behavior, 32 years later. The characters are real and precisely drawn, and when, finally, Liz Toliver overcomes her past and decides to live NOW, it was all I could do not to stand up and cheer.
If you're interested in reading an excellent mystery, beautifully written, read Somebody Else's Music. If you want to read a character study about a woman coming to terms with her past and rising above it, read Somebody Else's Music. And if you want to read what is, after all, an indictment of the foolishness that we Americans indulge ourselves in in high school, read Somebody Else's Music.
It's all those things.

Stylish and wicked

Successful writer and CNN celebrity Liz Toliver has never really gotten over her traumatic high school days as "Betsy Wetsy," the bookish, socially awkward butt of an almost over-the-top collection of nasty "popular" girls. This experience peaked during a bizarre night when Liz was nailed into a park outhouse with 22 snakes (she was well known to be phobic) while a classmate was murdered nearby. Now made even more famous by her coupling with a heart-throb rock star, Liz has to go "home" after 30 years to attend to her ill mother, dogged by the tabloid press which has her pegged for the killing.

Enter Haddam's Armenian-American veteran sleuth, Gregor Demarkian, retired chief of the FBI's behavioral science unit, hired by Liz's famous fiancé to look into the old, unsolved murder. The story shifts point of view among all these characters and only a writer of Haddam's wit and skill ("True Believers," "Skeleton Key") could carry off a story with such relentless venal and despicable types at its core - the brainless prom queen turned balding grotesque, the vindictive Machiavellian ring leader mired in sour alcoholism, the likely-to-succeed girl turned principal from hell, the faithful battered wife, the fat lady and the girl who got everything she wanted.

Demarkian, a confirmed city person whose ethnic experience leaves him baffled and bemused by the insidious small-town mindset, gives the story perspective and Liz, whose success has not relieved her myriad vulnerabilities and insecurities, gives it heart. Haddam's exploration of a cultural subset which finds its peak in high school triumphs is fiendishly believable and the resolution is aptly horrifying. A stylish and wicked success.

The Catholic Church has been pilloried aplenty in modern times for its teachings on birth control, priestly celibacy and a male-only priesthood. Kennedy, a psychologist and former Catholic priest, adds his voice to the jeering in this indictment of the Church of Rome. Kennedy argues that Catholicism suffers from a gaping wound because of its alleged failure to deal with sexual intimacy in its midst. Besides opposing artificial contraception and requiring priests to be unmarried males, Kennedy says the Church has failed its people by labeling as sinful all sexual activity outside marriage and deeming homosexuality an "objective disorder." He claims the Church is willing to look at intimate human experience only through its own "distorting lenses," but he fails to point out that other churches with a traditional view share many of Catholicism's positions on sexual behavior. Kennedy also criticizes the Vatican for what he says is its unwillingness to publicly discuss the celibate, all-male priesthood and for mishandling pedophilia scandals. Kennedy maintains that celibacy is a means "to master... men" through controlling their sexuality, and he traces the pedophilia problem to the immature sexual development of priest perpetrators. Readers who are unhappy with the Church's stances on human sexuality will find a sympathetic ear in Kennedy, but little in the way of realistic, constructive solutions.

The myth of Grail King Anfortas, which describes the slaying of Nature in an illusory search for spiritual perfection, serves here to engage readers in the controversial topic of the "unhealed wound of sexuality within institutional Catholicism." Psychologist and former priest Kennedy (My Brother Joseph: The Spirit of a Cardinal and the Story of a Friendship) suggests that human nature has been overruled by the reproaches and restrictions of the bureaucracy of the Catholic Church. The author addresses such topics as the priest shortage, hierarchical control within the Church, and sexual discrimination of women to create a dialog on papal edicts and foster critical thinking on the future direction of the Church. The Catholic bureaucracy would have the layperson believe that if the shortage of priests (and thus the need to ordain women) is not discussed, then it does not exist and male supremacy remains. In this way, the Church invests its power in mastery over human beings and loses its true authority in helping men and women heal and celebrate their nature and sexuality. Persuasively arguing that all aspects of our God-endowed human nature should be celebrated, Kennedy urges the institutional church to move beyond bureaucratic stasis to reestablish a healthy pastoral dialogue regarding all aspects of human sexuality. The subissues addressed in a thoughtful and provocative manner include the institutionalized subjugation of women, the enforcement of clerical celibacy, sex outside the confines of marriage, and birth control and abortion. Kennedy, a psychologist and former priest, insists that in order to remain viable in the twenty-first century, the Church must breach the artificially imposed gulf between sexuality and spirituality. Kennedy's self-pity

Kennedy reveals more about himself than about the Church. He fell in love and decided to leave the priesthood (OK, it happens) and thought the process of laicization was insensitive (it may have been, but Kennedy is a grown-up)). But he seems to think that the Catholic Church's constant teaching on sexuality is simply a power grab by celibate clerics who want to tyrannize over each other and the laity.
He is curiously weak on Scripture (which has a lot to say about sexual immorality) and mentions Christ only a few times. He rejects the Virgin Birth as physical reality because it was the root of the Church's high opinion of celibacy and virginity. Since the life of the resurrection, in which men neither marry nor are given in marriage, is anticipated by vowed religious, I would like to hear Kennedy on the physical reality of the Resurrection.
He also is ambivalent about homosexuality. He laments the Vatican's disciplining of those who refuse to teach that homosexual acts are wrong, but he claims that the departure of heterosexual priests (like himself) to marry has left a web of "lavender rectories" and a disproportionately homosexual priesthood. If it has, according to his standards so what?
Kennedy attacking the Church reminds me of Charles Kingsley attacking Cardinal Newman - over the same issue, celibacy. Both claim to speak for "healthy sexuality" against a church dominated by emasculated clerics, but the teaching of the church gives a far better guide to a happy married or single life than Kennedy's attitude that whatever most people what to do must be ok. Kennedy has drowned in the therapeutic culture, and forgets that sociology and psychology is not theology, much less the word of God come down from above.

Five Stars for Kennedy's "The Unhealed Wound!"

"The Unhealed Wound : The Church and Human Sexuality" by Eugene Kennedy is a very well written historical exposition and elegant human reflection on the Mystical Church vis-a-vis the Institutional Church. The Church of Mystery focuses on the celebration and sharing of one's special gifts to support the expansion of the "Good News" while the Institutional Church focuses on the control of its membership to preserve its organizational power structure.
This book is on the recommended reading list for the "Sex, Gender, and Spirituality" course in the Institue for Pastoral Studies, at Loyola University Chicago. According to the Mustard Seed Bookstore manager, it was the best book on the supplementary reading list. He was correct!
Beginning with the 1880's, Kennedy provides a brief but mesmerizing historical development of the American Church showing the tension between the intellectual and spiritual reflection on Jesus' mission and the dogmatic and curial sanctions placed on theologians. Did you know that "Fighting Father Duffy" was a Theology professor before he was a chaplain?
The purpose of Kennedy's book is certainly not to wallow in his leaving the priesthood. He just doesn't leave us in the muck and mire to sympathize with those who have been victimized by insensitive members of the hierarchy. His purpose is to focus on our mystical and spiritual gifts with which we have been graced. His invitation is to all hierarchy, clergy, religious and laity to listen to one another, to offer each other the gifts of the Spirit as St. Paul encourages us to do, and to implement those promtings wherever they take us. Kennedy suggests what some might consider 'revolutionary' options for healing our wounds, such as sharing responsibility and recognizing the Word of the Lord where we least expect it, not in dogma, but in each other.

No Prophet is Accepted in His Own Land

It is unfortunate that Eugene Kennedy is identified as "a former priest" on the book jacket, because this gives those who disagree with him a reason to reject the truthfulness of anything he has to say (as one reviewer has already done). Such a review says more about the reviewer than about the writer. Eugene Kennedy is no newcomer. He was commissioned by the National Council of Catholic Bishops, in the early 1970s, to coordinate a pyschological study of the American Catholic Priesthood. When his research lead to conclusions contrary to those that were hoped for, the study was not given official approval. Before that, he was best known for FASHION ME A PEOPLE and COMFORT MY PEOPLE, two books in which he tried to address some of the sexual issues in the lives of priests and nuns--issues, by the way, that are still relevant in the present work! For anyone who has lived the Catholic experience for the past forty years, the truth of much of what Kennedy writes is painfully obvious. He carefully distinguishes between the Church as Institution (Beauracracy) and the Church as Mystery (People of God). It doesn't take reading Eugene Kennedy to realize that there is a very real difference between these two forms of Church. He is insightful when he points out that the sexual issues that await healing by the Church as Institution are issues that have already been resolved by the Church as Mystery. Anyone who hears confessions today can tell you that. The people who ARE the Church have no problem with the idea of a married clergy, or with divorced and remarried Catholics being readmitted to the Sacraments. For most lay Catholics, birth control is a dead issue! Real healing of these wounds is needed. The current paralyzed leadership is not up to the task. They will not bite the hand that feeds them. It will take a Pope John XXIV. Let's pray he's waiting in the wings!

Funny and often acerbic, this diary in alternating voices chronicles one well-connected British couple's pregnancy, set against the backdrop of life among the media elite in New York City. Coles, a correspondent for the London Times, and Godwin, author of the award-winning memoir Mukiwa: A White Boy in Africa, start their New York life in a loft in the trendy downtown meat-packing district, taking forays to hip restaurants, elegant social events and an East Hampton rental they consider somewhat shabby. While the 30-something authors are candid about their feelings about impending parenthood, as well as about their search for a sympathetic doctor and hospital, Coles's physical changes and the details of labor and delivery, there is little tension in the story beyond the initial surprise of the pregnancy and the occasionally pointed comments of pushy Americans about the authors' unmarried state. In what may be an attempt to paint a vivid picture of the New York melting pot, the authors intently pinpoint the races and nationalities of nearly everyone they meet (e.g., Margarita, the Ecuadorian cleaning woman; a Pakistani newspaper vendor). But they give little depth to these and other incidental characters, making the use of broad categorizations insensitive and jarring. When they look for a new apartment, Coles and Godwin adopt New York "real estate fever" only to comment warily on being "nudged right up against the ghetto" in their new Upper West Side digs. Closing with the safe delivery of a son, Thomas, this superficial chronicle does not have much to contribute to pregnancy literature. While it will probably garner some media coverage in New York and the Northeast, it will strain mightily to elicit interest from readers beyond the islands of Manhattan and Great Britain. Coles and Godwin, both accomplished writers, offer insightful and amusing alternating first-person accounts of the nine-month period of awaiting parenthood. What makes their account especially appealing is the running commentary on life in New York, viewed from the perspective of two Brits. Godwin starts off dealing with a cancer scare that has provoked writer's block, and then Coles faces the prospect of pregnancy at age 36, when she's just gotten settled as a correspondent for a British newspaper. Early on, in search of a gynecologist, Coles observes that primary-care physicians are dedicated to preventing patients from seeing specialists and thereby saving the HMO some money. Godwin is fearful that Coles will use pregnancy "as an all-purpose excuse for bad behaviour," even as he scouts for "digestives known as graham crackers" to ease morning sickness. They comment on "voicemail hell," California king-sized mattresses, and the American obsession with pills for every tick, twitch, and pain. Their British humor and perspective provide refreshing insights into pregnancy and American culture. Vanessa Bush

Peter Godwin is the author of Mukiwa, A White Boy in Africa, which won the George Orwell Prize, and writes forNewsweek, National Geographic, and the New York Times Magazine. They live in New York with their son, Thomas.

A different type of co-existance

I've just finished this book, and as a first time mother to be in her 30's (like Joanna) , and an Ex-Rhodesian now living in the U.S. (like Peter), I found it a very interesting read. I enjoy Peter's writing a lot - this book was very different from his usual style. I was mildly uncomfortable that both Peter and Joanna seem to be very critical of everyone they meet or know - I'd feel like I was under a microscope if I had to meet them in real life. They also seem miserable a lot of the time, no matter where they go. To read their criticisms of people and places was amusing in the beginning, because I also have a dry sense of humor, but by the time I'd finished the book I was left with a sense of unease - these two don't seem very happy with each other or their life choices. Also too much 'name dropping' - that irritated me - I don't care what Puff Daddy does with his free time. I am looking forward to reading Peter's new book though, if it's as good as Mukiwa I won't be dissapointed.

The Experiences of Aliens in New York

The authors have managed to capture the bizarre nuances of daily life in New York while overlaying this with the difficulties and emotions attached to a first pregnancy. As resident aliens, my wife and I have recently been dealing with the similar issues associated with the upcoming birth of our first child.
This light hearted look at the processes required to give birth in the New York also provided us with forwarning of the costs, bureaucracy and personalities that are inevitably encountered along the way.
