Gouverneur Morris: Author, Statesman, and Man of the World, by James J. Kirschke

A fierce, florid nationalist, Gourveneur Morris was the most colorful of America's founding fathers. He financed and fought for American independence, witnessed firsthand the French revolution that followed, and brought his indomitable and outspoken presence to the table at the Consitutional Convention. There, he penned some of the most important and poetic sections of the Constitution, in the process creating the foundation of what Americans think of as democracy today.
A decade in the making, this biography uses extensive 18th-century primary sources and recent scholarship to shed new light on Gouverneur Morris. In doing so, it places Morris's impressive achievements more fully in the context of his times and reveals how his independent spirit triumphed over accidents and reversals that would have crushed a lesser soul. It also examines Morris's writings and speeches in great detail and explores the major lines of influence that led Morris to give the Preamble and the Constitution of the United States the shape and content that govern and inspire us today.

Gouvernour Morris in the American and French Revolutions
By Daniel Putman
This biography of Gouverneur Morris has some strengths and weaknesses. Probably the most positive aspect of the book is the detail in certain sections showing that Morris was far more important in founding the country than most writers give him credit for. For example, the chapter on the Constitutional Convention is excellent. Kirschke goes through the various articles of the Constitution and shows that Morris played a key role in many of the phrases and concepts that Americans now take for granted. The chapter will be valuable to students of American history and law and is of significant interest to the general reader interested in the origin of the Constitution. The same positive remarks can be said about Morris’s work abroad for the early United States. Morris was the only major diplomat that stayed in France in all the phases of the French Revolution through 1794; this includes surviving the Terror and giving numerous French aristocrats who had helped or who were sympathetic to America sanctuary in his house. Morris’s comments back to America and his insights on the European condition were often remarkably incisive.

But the book has some problems. Kirschke has a habit of putting in comparisons or references that break the flow of the biography and do not add much. He often cites other historians and compares Morris or his situation to modern people or events. He has a point at times but it makes the biography more like an academic treatise in places. Another typical type of insertion are phrases like “We have already seen...” or “I characterized…” These put the author into the flow of the book more than is helpful and again at times make the biography seem more like an essay or academic text. That would be fine but this is intended to be a biography. Kirschke also frequently inserts direct quotes from Morris or his compatriots. While many biographies do this, in many cases here the context could be developed more or a paraphrase of the quote would be much clearer to modern readers. Overall, despite discussing at times Morris’s friends, family and frequent love affairs, I did not get to know Gouvernour Morris as a person very well. The life story of this fascinating man deserved a more compelling telling.

So I recommend the book if you are looking for details about the role Gouverneur Morris played in founding the country. The book makes a valuable contribution in this regard. But I would not recommend it as a compelling biography.

Founding Father
By Christian Schlect
A solid biography of one of the best of the second tier of Founding Fathers. A most interesting life, with feet (given one was a peg leg) in the two most important revolutions of the late 1700s. Gouverneur Morris was at the deathbeds of John Paul Jones (in Paris) and Alexander Hamilton (in New York). George Washington admired his talents.

I enjoyed most Professor Kirschke's tracing of Morris' direct influence on the final drafting of sections of the U.S. Constitution.

While the author, in closing, compares his subject's career to that of Adlai Stevenson, I disagree. This comparison does not do full justice to Gouverneur Morris' many and varied contributions to our country's early history.
