Women in the Medieval Islamic World (The New Middle Ages)From Palgrave Macmillan

Women often appear invisible in what is widely perceived as the male-oriented society of Islam. Women in the Medieval Islamic World seeks to redress the balance with a series of original essays on women in the pre-modern phase of Islamic history. The reader will encounter here a colourful portrait gallery of rulers, politicians, poets and patrons, as well as some larger than life fictitious females from the pages of Arabic, Persian and Turkish literature. No less authentic are the accounts of quiet or troubled lives of ordinary women preserved in the court records of Mamluk Egypt and Ottoman Turkey, reminders that historical research can resuscitate the lives of subaltern as well as elite women from the past. For people who believe that Muslim women, especially medieval Muslim women, have no history, this book demonstrates the ways in which research by twenty international scholars - sometimes working in their own distinct fields and sometimes in overlapping areas - can bring into focus the role and contribution of women in the development of Islamic history. There will no longer be an excuse for their exclusion.

The Road from Versailles: Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and the Fall of the French Monarchy, by Munro Price

What becomes of leaders when absolute power is wrested from their hands? How does dramatic political change affect once-absolute monarchs? In acclaimed historian Munro Price’s powerful new book, he confronts one of the enduring mysteries of the French Revolution---what were the true actions and feelings of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette as they watched their sovereignty collapse?

Dragged back from Versailles to Paris by the crowd in October 1789, the king and queen became prisoners in the capital. They were compelled for their own safety to approve the Revolution and its agenda. Yet, in deep secrecy, they soon began to develop a very different, and dangerous, strategy. The precautions they took against discovery, and the bloody overthrow of the monarchy three years later, dispersed or obliterated most of the clues to their real policy. Much of this evidence has until now remained unknown.

The Road from Versailles reconstructs in detail, for the first time, the king and queen’s clandestine diplomacy from 1789 until their executions. To do so, it focuses on a vital but previously ignored figure, the royal couple’s confidant, the baron de Breteuil. Exiled from France by the Revolution, Breteuil became their secret prime minister, and confidential emissary to the courts of Europe.

Along with the queen’s probable lover, the comte de Fersen, it was Breteuil who organized the royal family’s dramatic dash for freedom, the flight to Varennes. Breteuil’s role is crucial to an understanding of what Louis and Marie Antoinette secretly felt and thought during the Revolution. To unlock these secrets, The Road from Versailles draws on highly important unpublished and previously unknown material.

Meticulously researched and utterly fascinating, The Road from Versailles provides fresh insight into some of the most controversial events in modern history.

From Publishers Weekly
Historians have long argued about the true intent of Louis XVI regarding the French Revolution. Was the king prepared to accept a limited monarchy or did he intend to restore the old regime? Price, a specialist on 18th-century France, has unearthed a treasure trove of vital material-memoirs, diaries, official documents and correspondence-connected with the diplomatic representatives of the king, in particular the Baron de Breteuil, the king's prime minister in July 1789, when a Parisian mob stormed the Bastille. With the royal family in prison, Breteuil secretly traveled all over Europe with two goals: to help the royal family escape from Paris and to restore the absolute monarchy. Price takes us inside the world of 18th-century diplomacy, showing Breteuil's attempts to win financial and military backing from Austria, Sweden, Russia and other European monarchies. In June 1792, the royal family attempted its famous failed escape to Varennes. Breteuil eventually gained military support from Marie Antoinette's native Austria. Both Austria and Prussia invaded France in 1792, but were surprisingly defeated at the Battle of Valmy. The king was tried and executed in January 1793, Marie Antoinette shortly thereafter. What Price proves beyond doubt is that Louis had numerous chances to compromise with the revolution. He refused, choosing instead an ill-fated agenda of restoring absolute monarchy. This exhaustively researched study should be the definitive diplomatic history of the fall of Louis XVI. 16 pages of color photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
In this engrossing work of historical scholarship, Price has managed to unravel a complex web of intrigue that has baffled historians since the demise of the ancien r gime. Through brilliant detective work, Price (senior lecturer, Univ. of Bradford; Preserving the Monarchy) has uncovered documents that shed a definitive light on the French Crown's policy toward the revolution. Specifically, he has located among other significant archival materials a "large buff ledger" that itemizes secret missions that the Marquis de Bombelles undertook on behalf of Louis XVI. (Bombelles was the prot g of Baron de Breteuil, who was the French monarch's designated envoy to the Courts of Europe from 1791 until the collapse of the French monarchy.) Up to now, a paucity of documentary evidence has made it very difficult for students of the French Revolution to determine the Crown's true intentions during the critical early years of revolutionary turmoil. Price proves that the French king and queen made a concerted effort to undermine the work of the Constituant Assembly and to gain foreign support for restoration of royal authority. This definitive study moves well beyond such works as Michel Vovelle's The Fall of the French Monarchy. Highly recommended for both academic and public libraries.

From Booklist
Price plays historical detective in order to uncover the hidden political agenda of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette during the height of the French Revolution. Imprisoned in Paris by the radicals, the king and queen decided to play a dangerous game of intrigue and deception. Presenting a united and cooperative public face, they secretly conspired on a counterrevolutionary strategy designed to undermine the National Assembly and restore the monarchy to much of its former glory. Acting as emissary for the royal couple, exiled diplomat Baron de Breteuil attempted to negotiate with other European nations for their support in defeating the revolution. Conducting an extensive investigation to unearth correspondence between Breteuil and his most trusted agent, Price followed the paper trail to the State Archives of Sweden and Austria and to a remote Austrian castle. Resurrecting a wealth of historical documentation, he has scrupulously detailed the previously unknown underground diplomacy of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, creating a significant contribution to the analysis of the French Revolution. Incredibly Researched
By C. C. Simpson
Author Munro Price has shown that intense research combined with informative speculation is consistent with successfully piecing together a very confusing and torrid sequence of events in Western European history. Price, through what appears to be pains taking information gathering, relays a brilliant account of the lives of some of the French Revolution's most influential players. He brings to light, to those not in the academic world, the Baron de Breteuil and his tremendous influence on the policy of counter-revolutionary France. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, the recipients of the brunt of the Revolution, were shown both in their glory and in the flaws that led to their eventual demise. Price has not failed to impress with his clearly thought out formulations of the mindset and personal weaknesses of Louis XVI and, in contrast, the inner strength of Marie Antoinette. This book is easily followed and is difficult to put down. I recommend to anyone interested in this monumental period of political change in Europe.

Insight into the Royals
By Darin A. Leviloff
I got this book to learn a little about a topic I didn't know that much about. That I came away feeling that I was well-versed in the most esoteric of historical controversies is a testament to the quality of the work. The author has painstakingly researched the issues involved in the French Revolution. Everywhere in the book where a controversy is discussed, the author makes his conclusion, provides the evidence for his conclusion, and why he doesn't believe in alternative explanations. This comprehensive approach allows the reader to understand history not from the usual "because I say, it is so" approach, but to have a sense of how other theories might co-exist.

The narrative shows how close run a thing the French Revolution was and how many directions it might have taken. It also shows the struggles of two highly flawed individuals (the irresolute King and his stubborn, crafty wife) placed in the most complicated of situations. Most importantly, it focuses on Mssr. Bretieul, a French noble, who steadfastly negotiated on their behalf among foreign capitals for many hopeless years.

The book differs from others in that it shows the Revolution from an almost exclusively Royal point of view. Those looking for an overview of the Revolutionary side will be sorely disappointed. But, those who want to see insight into the minds of the royals, who fumbled and bumbled into an escalation that destroyed the tradition of ages, will revel in the fascinating story.

Larkin's work continues to yield fresh and sometimes surprising readings. This volume juxtaposes widely different essays by established commentators and younger critics from England, Northern Ireland, the USA, Canada, Belgium and Hungary. Individual contributors discuss Larkin's unpublished fiction and the journals of his lover, Patsy Strang. Others examine Larkin's novels and poetry in the light of existentialist philosophy, psychoanalysis, postmodern, postcolonial and Bakhtinian theories. Some contributors define Larkin's Englishness in relation to forerunners such as Lawrence, Eliot, Auden and MacNeice, or anchor his work in the malaise of postwar Britain. Other contributors search out mystical, placeless, 'factless' or aesthetic Larkins who transcend such historicist readings.

The Last Leaf of Harlem: Selected and Newly Discovered Fiction

A literary event―selected and previously uncollected fiction by the woman who was the last surviving member of the Harlem Renaissance.

When Dorothy West died in 1998, she was the last surviving member of the Harlem Renaissance, a contemporary of Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and Richard Wright. Popular history holds that between the publication of her two novels (The Living is Easy in 1948 and The Wedding in 1995), Dorothy West fell silent.

In fact, there was never a time in Dorothy West's life in which she was not writing and publishing. The Last Leaf of Harlem gathers West's writing from these supposedly silent years--syndicated fiction in the New York Daily News, pieces for the Work Progress Administration's Federal Writer's Project, and publications in small journals and magazines--along with known and beloved pieces by this extraordinary writer.

Many of these stories, describing and exploring marriage, loss, family life, and poverty were lost until now. The Last Leaf of Harlem brings together the almost-forgotten pieces of Dorothy West's lifework, and gives the reader a fresh look into a remarkable writer and career.

DOROTHY WEST was born in Boston circa 1908. At her death in 1998, she was the last surviving member of the Harlem Renaissance. Her works include: The Living is Easy, The Wedding, and The Richer, The Poorer. LIONEL C. BASCOM is a professor of English at Western Connecticut State University. A long-time investigative journalist, Bascom has specialized lately in the discovery of forgotten or neglected literary manuscripts by early 20th Century African-Americans, black folklore and stories about black culture in the United States. He is the editor of A Renaissance in Harlem and lives in Danbury, Connecticut.

Our Lady of the Circus, by David Toscana

The latest offering by acclaimed Mexican writer David Toscana is a whimsical and dark tale about a group of circus performers who, disillusioned with their lives as traveling entertainers, are seduced by the idea of settling down and living like ordinary people.

Our Lady of the Circus begins with the once formidable circus of the Mantecón Brothers breaking apart, resulting in one brother taking with him the best of the group. Left behind is brother Don Alejo, who tries to rally the remaining troupe of eight stragglers and a pig. Together they stumble upon an abandoned town, where the demoralized performers seize the opportunity to start over and christen it Santa María del Circo.

What ensues is an absurd and tragic look at the misfits' struggle to create new lives for themselves. Through these desperate characters, Toscana skillfully reveals the many defects of humanity and the individual's desire for self-realization, and, in so doing, creates a touching metaphor for the human condition.

From Publishers Weekly
A group of eight stranded circus performers colonize an abandoned town in this darkly humorous and poignantly allegorical novel by Mexican writer Toscana (Tula Station). A squabble between the two founders of the Mantec¢n Brothers Circus, Don Alejo and Don Ernesto, results in the split-up of performers and assets. When Don Alejo and the five men and three women left in his charge trudge into an abandoned town, they decide to become ordinary citizens, and the results are ludicrously serious. They rename the town Santa Maria of the Circus and hold a drawing to pick occupations. The midget, who cannot remember the Mass, is a priest. The bearded lady becomes a doctor, and the contortionist must play the role of Negro, and do all the work no one else wants to do. The paunchy strong man is discomfited but willing when he is assigned to be the town whore. Don Alejo, the only one who refuses to participate in the plan, secludes himself in the big top with his performing pig in its velveteen robe. Hungry and half-mad, the ex-performers sink periodically into self-gratifying reminiscences, only to awake to a fast-deteriorating reality. When Don Ernesto happens back with his half of the circus, the rest of the troupe is changed beyond recognition. Astringent, remorseless and spectacularly strange, this is a cunning social satire, a wise and wonderful companion to Charles G. Finney's immortal Circus of Dr. Lao. (Sept.)Forecast: More accessible than the well-received but forbiddingly metafictional Tula Station, this clever and smoothly translated novel should stimulate interest in its impressive young Mexican author.

The book of wisdom
By A Customer
This novel might very well be the Philosophy Textbook of our times, and thus, a literary masterpiece. With only eight circus performers, an impresario and a pig, David Toscana explains with wisdom why our societies do not work, why our world is going crazy, why some things I don't want to mention happen. In an allegorical, apocalyptical, and even humorous way, every social issue is covered: religion, sexism, racism, media, poverty, the military, xenophobia, ecology, health, aging, politics, injustice, solitude, despair and more. The human condition -not the circus- is the greatest show on Earth, but just until we all go to hell.

More clowns wanted in the freakshow of life.
By Mary Whipple
The Amazing Mantecon Brothers Circus, a down-at-the-heels roadshow of freaks, failures, and outcasts, dissolves after its arrival at an abandoned Mexican town. Eight performers and one of the brothers remain behind to "settle" the town and create a home, while the majority continue their haphazard journey through the hinterlands. For the settlers, "A bunch of empty houses was a greater temptation than a life filled with applause..." In this unique "utopia," which they name Santa Maria of the Circus, the "essential" jobs for the community are assigned by lot. The midget, for example, becomes the priest (saying "The hell with it," when he can't remember the Mass), the bearded lady is the surgeon, the strongman is the "puta," assigned to a house on the outskirts of town, and the youthful contortionist is "the Negro," the scapegoat for all.

With no water, no food, no clocks, and no mirrors, the characters in Santa Maria confront, often humorously, the very essence of life and survival. Toscano uses his wild cast to comment on the world at large, revealing man's innate longings and fears, his need to belong, and the sadness of being different. As Nathaniel, the one-eyed midget, says, "If it weren't for my height, no one would know I'm a midget." Gentle satire, whimsy, black humor, subtle and not-so-subtle word pictures, and consummate irony combine with sensitive description and poignant observations by these characters about the world as they, and, presumably, we find it.

Despite the book's warmth and whimsy, however, the overriding belief that "chance is God" pervades this narrative, leading ultimately to an extremely dark and very depressing conclusion, one which came as a huge letdown to me. Though life is not all fun and games, and many problems exist both in society and in human relationships, these characters are survivors in the very weird circus of their lives, despite the curves that chance has thrown them. The ending is consistent with the theme that "chance is God," but I felt it was not consistent with the overall tone of the book, even when that tone became darker and less playful. I found myself wondering if the author needed a way to extricate himself from the thematic corner into which he had painted himself and chose this ending as a deus ex machina. Mary Whipple

Amazon.com Review
Edwin Kreiss is a former FBI agent whose discovery of a Chinese espionage ring made him a lot of enemies and resulted in his early retirement. Now his daughter is missing, and nobody, least of all a junior G-woman named Janet Carter, is going to keep him from finding her. Browbeating the one clue to her disappearance out of a terrified college student, Kreiss follows his daughter's trail to a deactivated federal arsenal in southwestern Virginia, where a fanatic whose son was immolated at Waco is cooking up a plan to blow the ATF to bits.

Kreiss is uniquely qualified to play his role as hunter-in-chief. He's been trained as a "sweeper," a job title that refers to the cleanup of rogue agents and other enemies of the state, and he took a few high-tech search-and-destroy goodies with him when he was prematurely put out to pasture by his former employers. Now another sweeper wants to put him out of action, and Janet Carter's getting conflicting signals from her own superiors about just how much cooperation they're willing to give Kreiss as he sets out to rescue his daughter--and, incidentally, redeem his own troubled past.

P.T. Deutermann is a skillful writer who knows how to tell a story. This briskly paced thriller almost turns the pages by itself. Carter, the ostensible heroine of the novel, never quite extinguishes her ambivalence about either Kreiss or the agency she serves, an attempt at multidimensionality of character that's more confusing than revealing. The ending hints at a continued relationship between them, but it's Kreiss, rather than Carter, who engages the reader's attention and whose future we really care about. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Part action novel, part spy thriller, this explosive tour de force follows the adventures of aging superspy Edwin Kreiss, retired under a cloud, who sets Agency blood boiling when he steps out on his own to find his kidnapped college student daughter, Lynn, after the FBI stops looking. Rookie agent Janet Carter is informed of the spy's dark past, warned off when she digs for info, then ordered by creepy Agency and Justice drones with ulterior motives to keep tabs on Kreiss. Kreiss finds Lynn's cap near the Ramsey Arsenal, a dangerous mothballed toxic chemical complex in dense woods near Roanoke, and it's just a matter of time until he locates her captor, a fanatic who is making a bomb at the complex, intending to blow up ATF HQ in D.C. and avenge his son's death at Waco. Janet leads agents to the complex, but an explosion sends her to the hospital along with Lynn, who is pulled out of the rubble. The women flee the hospital, barely eluding Misty, a deadly female CIA assassin bent on grabbing Lynn in an attempt to settle an Agency score with Kreiss. The author exceeds his near-perfect Train Man with this ripped-from-the-headlines plot pitting a middle-aged Rambo with a small but deadly arsenal of spy gadgets against spine-chilling villains, corrupt Agency brass and powerful political forces. Deutermann never sounds a wrong note in this nonstop page-turner. (Mar. 19) Forecast: An excerpt from Hunting Season in the mass market edition of Train Man (St. Martin's, Mar.) will alert Deutermann's fans to the new book, while the novel's anti-government slant should satisfy their and other readers' seemingly insatiable appetite for tales of Washington corrupton. Expect vigorous sales; audio rights have been sold to Brilliance.

From Booklist
The author is a retired navy captain who worked as an arms-control specialist for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In his seventh novel, he introduces Edwin Kreiss, a one-time intelligence-agency "sweeper" who specialized in getting rid of rotten apples in the organizational barrel. After his daughter disappears while camping, Kreiss launches his own investigation but soon finds his progress impeded by characters from his past and by a pretty FBI agent named Janet Carter, who's bent on wrapping up the case all by herself. It doesn't take too long for Kreiss to realize not only that his daughter is at serious risk but also that he's being hunted by another "sweeper," and that it's up to him and Carter to prevent a Washington, D.C., bomb attack. The tale is loaded with political and bureaucratic skulduggery, and there are plenty of well-banked curves and clever twists. A solid read from an author whose own tradecraft is every bit as good as that of his characters. Budd Arthur

Great political.spy thriller
By Breck
The best fiction I have read in years. A vivid description of a former agent's search for his missing daughter hampered by infighting among intelligence services in the US. The "hunt" is set against a very imaginative but believable background and portrayed through well defined characters.

A great action book that actually keeps you guessing. You want to put it down, but just can't seem able to. YOu know what I mean? (I will not go into what happens in the book, because it somehow defeats the point of reading it).
This is my first Deutermann book, and something tells me it won't be the last.
Do read it. It will make a great action movie one day.

Review

'Christiansen's books are good! I am fond of saying that most business books are simply an article that has been stretched to book length for the convenience of the author. Nothing could be further from the truth in this case. Christiansen's books are packed with insights and examples and are quite tightly written. The use of clinical data is quite elegant and is pitched at exactly the right level. I found myself feeling incredibly 'proud.' While I had nothing to do with Christiansen's work, it felt good to have had an association with someone whose work is of this calibre.' - Michael Brimm, Professor of Organizational Behaviour, INSEAD

'Christiansen captures the key managerial issues and tools in the fostering of innovation and defines managerial roles and tasks in a very insightful and useful way. A key readling for senior executives who worry about how to make their firms more innovative.' - Yves Doz, Timken Chaired Professor of Global Technology and Innovation, INSEAD

'Business leaders know if their companies fail to innovate, they are doomed. Christiansen explores the complexity of the innovation system and shows what makes it tick. He writes convincingly that it is possible to improve the innovation performance of virtually any company.' - Gary E. McGraw, Vice President, Technological Innoation, Eastman Chemical Company

'This book is about creating a culture of innovation. Chrsitansen's approach to the issue will strike a chord with experienced executives. It is practical, actionable and designed to help us to make effective improvements to our innovation system.' - from the preface by Xavier Mosquet, Senior Vice President, Boston Consulting Group

About the Author
JAMES CHRISTIANSEN has a Masters Degree and MBA from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D in Management from INSEAD. He has worked as a consultant for the Boston Consulting Group and Bain and Company and currently works as a Manager for Renaissance Worldwide in London and Paris.

One of the most practical books I have read about Innovation
By Mario Morales Rodrigu
I have being reading the most important literature about Innovation Management and I have found this book extremelly practical. Christiansen is the first author I have read that gives you advise on how to implement change to improve the innovation capability of your company and gives you a clear research-based approach about which management systems should be changed first and why. For me, something very revealing was the chapter on how innovation systems should be different depending on the industry and/or company you are. This book offers a great value.

Nice attempt, but not good enough

Summary:

Text-part to be used together with a different atlas. (e.g. "Historical Atlas of East Central Europe, by P. R. Magocsi or Cartographia's "Történelmi Világatlasz" (in Hungarian))
When I first discovered this atlas I thought: "At last a specific work on the topic in English!".
Well, despite the range of the maps - 52, listed at the end of the review - it was a disappointment.
First: As all ready pointed out bellow by fellow reviewers, the actual Eastern Europe - Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine - is only dealt with on the periphery. This is actually an atlas of East-Central Europe and the Balkans.
Second: The mentality of the text sometimes. "Nationalist", is one of the much preferred word used by the author, especially when dealing with newer history. The difference between "nationalism" and "patriotism" is apparently very subjective.
Third: The two first points could be something one could deal with - since a wrong title does not necessarily mean bad quality, and the book is aimed for US public - but now comes the greatest disadvantage about this work: The maps themselves. They can at best be described as of "average" quality, but words like "perfunctory" or "sloppy" could be used as well. There is no excuse for the roughness and distortion of state boundaries, the lack of rivers and cities/towns. And the actual errors to them have yet to be mentioned.
All in all, the map part of this atlas is suitable for very low-level studies of the area only, likely as a picture book for kids (and/or journalists) and the text for high-school studies. It must be mentioned that the author makes a honest attempt to be objective in the history telling, by sometimes presenting several versions/views on the same event, BUT I am sure that this still won't satisfy everybody.
A last remark: This volume shares 14 - or 1/3 - out of it's 52 maps with the "Historical Atlas of the Balkans" from the same series. (Nos. (4), 10, 16, 17, 18, 22, 24, 32, 36, 38, 39, 45, 46, 51 and 52, as observed by the author of these lines.)

Woe is the prolongation of the Cold War mentality
By e1x56u$*w#
As the first new atlas of Eastern Europe of the new millenium, it is highly disappointing to see that this work has chosen to arbitrarily fix the eastern limits of Eastern Europe at the present-day eastern border of NATO, and leave out the "backward" lands of the former "evil empire". It is interesting to observe how people can at times discuss "European Russia" as ending at the Ural Mountains, but when it suits them feel no qualms about conveniently leaving this area out, because after all "nothing important goes on there anyway". This is just the perpetuation of long-held Western European biases about Eastern Europe (read "Slavs in the Eyes of the Occident" by Ciesla-Korytowska or "Infidels, Turks and Women: The South Slavs in the German Mind, Ca. 1400-1600" by Petkov for starters) which have been further reinforced by decades of the Cold War.

While Paul Robert Magocsi's excellent atlas also stopped short of including the eastern half of Eastern Europe (probably because he wanted us to buy his already-existing tome "Historical Atlas of Ukraine"), at least it was aptly titled "Historical Atlas of East Central Europe". This book's title is misleading to say the least.
One could make a case that the author wished to confine the coverage due to the complexity of the limited area he did cover. However, since the same author has also recently produced "The Palgrave Concise Historical Atlas of the Balkans", one wonders just how much more valuable this work is made by simply expanding the scope to include Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia (and perhaps parts of Hungary and Romania?)
While a good job was done on the part of Eastern Europe covered, this book would have been twice as useful with the other half of Eastern Europe included as well. Thus people wanting to study the migrations of peoples such as the Hungarians and Bulgarians (or the Goths in the opposite direction), or invading threats to Europe such as the Avars or the Golden Horde will yet again be forced to buy two atlases and attempt to piece the picture together.
Also, what is believed to be the area of the formation of the Slavs lies across modern-day boundaries between Poland, Ukraine and Byelorus, and adequate coverage of this topic would seem impossible given the book's limitations.
It is unfortunate that despite all the progress made in the last decade, Europe can still not be seen in anything but terms of its recent political divisions. This cannot help but greatly impede our understanding of the past.

Delivers the goods
By Barton Cramer
I purchased this as a prelude to a tourist trip to Southeastern Europe -- territory that was behind the Iron Curtain during much of my life. It is also territory with a turbulent and confusing history, and many ethnic and religious rivalries. I found this Palgrave Historical Atlas to be at an ideal level to serve as an introduction to the geography, demographics, and history of this region, although I confess I remain overwhelmed by the details. Nevertheless, the text accompanying the many maps is generally well-written, and the maps are simplified and generalized to an appropriate degree to convey the territorial struggles and other spatial patterns without becoming overly confusing (all maps feature black & white lines with multiple shades of green used to portray areas of interest). As the authors state, boundaries were often fuzzy and shifting in this area where Muslims and Christians of various persuasions struggled for power and control at both local and regional scales. Indeed, a watershed struggle over Muslim / Christian dominance in Europe was played out on this Eastern margin, as it was in Spain and southwestern France in the West. The authors are to be complemented in maintaining a carefully neutral tone, while at the same time not stinting in their descriptions of the often arbitrary and ill-advised political and military decisions that have led to today's still somewhat unsettled national boundaries.

For the information of prospective purchasers, this atlas deals with the swath of Eastern Europe from Poland in the north through the current countries of The Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, to the Balkans and Greece in the south, plus Romania and Bulgaria on the coast of the Black Sea. Germany, Russia, and Turkey, all key external players, are only portrayed and discussed along their respective bordering lands.

The Phantom of Manhattan, by Frederick Forsyth

It is 1906, and few in the teeming metropolis of New York City have heard of, let alone seen, the hugely wealthy man who controls so many of their lives. Few, too, would have heard of the extraordinary events that took place at the Paris Opera House more than twenty years before - a story as dramatic as any of the operas themselves: a tale of love and murder and passion, the heartbreaking legend of Phantom of the Opera....

It all began in 1882, when Antoinette Giry, Maitresse du corps de ballet at the Opera, took her small child, Meg, to a carnival. And there, to her horror, she saw a caged, filthy, manacled creature whose tormented eyes shone from a grotesquely deformed face. Overcome by pity, Madame Giry freed him, cured his wounds and finally let him find a dwelling place in the seven below ground levels of the labyrinthine Opera. The creature - Erik - was to become the Phantom of the Opera, his hideous visage masking a brilliant mind. He is a magician, an artist, a musician, and lover. But when he tries to lure the object of his adoration to his underground domain - it must end in tragedy.

But did it end?

Gaston Leroux's original novel The Phantom of the Opera has been the subject of many adaptations. One of which is of course Andrew Lloyd Webber's spectacular stage production of The Phantom of the Opera.. Old friends Frederick Forsyth and Andrew Lloyd Webber discussed how the Phantom's story might continue. As Forsyth said: "Andrew Lloyd Webber's superb musical left us with an enigma: what ever happened to the Phantom and Christine? The answer is the theme of the novel." The result is a memorable tale.

The Phantom of the Opera goes to New York.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
The author of The Day of the Jackal (1971) and Icon (1996) steals more then a page from Gaston Leroux and Andrew Lloyd Webber to bring Erik, the Phantom of the Paris Opera, to America bearing his memories of Christine. Forsyth opens his continuation in 1906 with Antoinette Girya former Paris Opera ballerina who became mistress of the corps de ballet, now 58 and dying of cancertelling the familiar story of Christine de Chagny, the Phantom's beloved, currently the greatest diva in Europe. Giry first saw 16-year-old Erik as a cruelly deformed sideshow freak, with one side of his face looking like molten candle wax and maggots writhing in wounds caused by his chains. Later she freed Erik and nursed him, letting him wander the seven floors under the opera house. Having learned carpentry from his brutal father, who had sold him to the circus, Erik filched what he needed and built his own quarters, then taught himself all the works in the opera's enormous library. He fell in love with Christine, coached her singing, and abducted her once she became a star. When the police and pregnant Christine's beau Vicomte de Chagny saved her, Erik fled. Antoinette found him and, in Forsyth's point of departure from Gaston Leroux, put him on a freighter bound for New York. At this point Erik takes up the story. Starting as a fish-gutter, he becomes as wealthy as Croesus. At first he wants a screened and curtained box at the new Metropolitan Opera, but instead he joins Oscar Hammerstein as a secret partner in opening a house of his own. His eye is on the renowned soprano Nellie Melba. Just as his plans are ripening, however, Christine comes to Manhattan to sing at the Mets inaugural opera. Will she and the Phantom sing together again? Will he see his son at last? Forsyth captures the era with a brilliant series of pasteboard narrators who stand in for Manhattan's garish liveliness. Please understand, though, it's all perfectly operatic. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

"'Frederick Forsyth not only captures the spirit and style of Gaston Leroux's original novel, but also the romance and thrills that make the Phantom such an alluring character'"

Interesting, if not wonderful...
By Amariel Rowan
I gave this one four stars if only because I thought that it had a reasonable plot and stuck pretty well to the spirit of Leroux's original characters, facts that made me unable to give it three. However, although the plot is reasonable, it is hardly a page turner. The idea of Erik luring Christine in with a new opera house opening only to discover that she had a son, his son, not Raouls, is good but not original. Pierres instant ditching of the only father he's ever known for one he's never met is rather, well...unrealistic.

On the good side, it does make for an interesting idea about what happened after Christine left Erik, and it sticks to Leroux's original writing style, that of mapping out the story strictly from the point of view of people who came in contact with Christine and Erik (i.e. the family priest, the intrepid reporter, Erik's servant, etc.), a perspective you don't usually find in Phantom sequels/prequels.

All in all, if your a Phantom Phan, it makes for an interesting read. If your not a phan, start with the original novel and Susan Kay's Phantom first, then hit this one.

Glad I got it
By †Faith♥*¨*•.¸¸♥†
Every Phantom sequel I have read, while none the book I'd have written, has been done, I believe, thoughtfully. That would include this one. Written pre-"Gerik," my formal introduction to this character, I found this story to be interesting & imaginative. I did not consider Mr. Forsyth's opinion of Mr. Leroux's work to be overly unkind, but merely his explanation of the thought process behind his own work. I did not find the references to better known people of the day to be out of place, & was pleasantly surprised that Mr. Forsyth included a quote by the oft overlooked writer, G. K. Chesterton. Most authors do their best to incorporate the characteristics of the already known character into their sequels. This one depicts Erik as a man struggling, then succeeding to some degree, to survive in a world he believes will not accept him as he is, using some of the ways that we know he knows best - that being mostly his creative genius. The other characters, too, behaved as I would imagine they would in the set of circumstances they met in this particular tale. Again, not the way I would continue his story, but I still enjoyed it, & consider this a welcome addition to my collection.

Forsyth was not at his best with this book
By Cynthia Grissinger
Being a Phantom of the Opera fan and enjoying Frederick Forsyth's books, I expected a lot more from this one. I found it tedious reading with a very thin plot. It did not keep my interest. It was written on request of Andrew Lloyd Webber who intended it as a sequal to his Broadway smash. However, it misses the mark completely.
