Development, Crisis, and Class Struggle: Learning from Japan and East Asia, by Paul Burkett, Martin Hart-Landsberg

East Asia has long been the focus of development debates, first as a success story and now as a region in crisis. Nonetheless, there has been little if any serious discussion of what the region’s experience tells us about capitalism and the prospects for non-capitalist development alternatives more centered on the needs of workers and communities. Development, Crisis and Class Struggle fills this gap.

From Publishers Weekly
Whether scrambling up the desiccated slopes of Utah's Desolation Canyon in pursuit of birds known as chukars or whipping a tenuous fly line into the Florida surf, Fergus (A Hunter's Road) relates simple and vivid details in this pleasing account of six years of travel and sport. Perhaps befitting a sportsman, Fergus has a spare writing style and uses only what he needs. The result is a light and enjoyable collection of tales featuring Fergus, his dog Sweetzer and a random cast ranging from a Georgia native known as Fishboy to a modern-day Davy Crockett, whom Fergus dubs the Mountain Man in deference to his flintlock rifle and steady hand with a double-bladed tomahawk. Fergus and the people with whom he hunts are not the beer-guzzling, reckless pillagers of nature who often live in the popular imagination. Even those who don't condone the sport should heed Fergus's points that hunters such as Theodore Roosevelt began the conservation movement, and that development, overgrazing and chemical farming cause incalculably greater harm to animal populations than does huntingAharm that is "rarely perceived by anyone other than the knowledgeable wildlife biologist." Because the book is composed primarily of previously published, though reworked, articles, readers are sometimes reintroduced to people and species that have already appeared. Even so, these overlapping tales have the honest allure of a good campfire yarn. Illus. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Colorado outdoor writer Fergus' essays celebrate bird hunting, friends, dogs, fishing, Native American culture, and the American countryside. Hunting and fishing are his primary concerns, and the majority of the pieces are about hunting turkeys, geese, grouse, partridge, and quail and fishing for bonefish, tarpon, bass, and trout. The sporting activity takes place as Fergus works his way across the country in an Airstream trailer with only his dog, Sweetzer, for company. In addition to accounts of his adventures in pursuit of fish and fowl, Fergus offers vivid descriptions of obscure wildlands in North Dakota, Nebraska, and elsewhere as well as appealing vignettes about cooking, camping, and the people he meets on the road. Insightful observations on the perils facing small towns and farms bring a touch of social consciousness to the easygoing, personable memoir. This book will appeal to those who enjoy the outdoor writing of William Tapply (see below) and Russell Chatham. John Rowen

From Kirkus Reviews
Handsome, deliberative hunting vignettes, many collected from the column Fergus (A Hunters Road: A Journey with Gun and Dog Across the American Upland, 1992, etc.) wrote for Sports Afield. Ranging far and wide in his beaten Suburban, following the seasons (which provide the book with its superstructure), towing an Airstream and a company of dogs, Fergus hunts up hunting venues and friends, then fashions from them these neat sketches. Its clear from the start that Fergus is where he wants to be, outside, peeling back the dead skin and exposing a clean surface, drinking in the miracle and wonder of walking with a dog, a shotgun, and a well-chosen comrade in the uplands and draws and river bottoms. He talks of the attentiveness demanded of, and the grace conferred on, the hunter, visits the rarified and inaccessible homeplace of the white-tailed ptarmigan, fly fishes from a sea kayak in skinny water and gets towed by his catch (yes, shades of Papa, but Fergus's own). There are enough frustrations and minor disastersruined days when caught mistakenly trespassing on a very ill-disposed farmer's land, dogs meeting the wrong end of a porcupine or the lightning-quick hooves of a muleso that when you read ``opening day dawned a fine cool September morning,'' or that on the estate he was hunting in Florida ``a dense fog settled over the massive live oaks that were hung in Spanish moss like oxidized tinsel,'' you actually feel good for the guy. Not all is an unqualified successtwo of the fishing pieces sound more like writing assignments than experiences, and there is a hunt with Rick Bass in the Yaak Valley that aspires to portents and magic and falls way short. But the duds are few. It is Bass who writes in an introduction that Fergus ``considers and respects his friends, his prey, his dogs, and the landscapes that engage these things.'' That makes Fergus a rare and real presence in any world, hunting or otherwise. (photos, not seen) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A book for non-sportsmen, too
By Ron Franscell, Author of 'Morgue: A Life in Death'
If you've ever thought about a fisherman's life on the banks of a trout stream or knee-deep in the Bahamian surf, or just contemplated why the seasons change colors, you might want to hitch a ride with Jim Fergus.
The self-described "hook-and-bullet hack" -- in fact, one of the most thoughtful hunting and fishing writers in America, a field editor for Sports Afield magazine -- travels "The Sporting Road" like Kerouac with a fly rod and a 12-gauge, where every stream is a stream of consciousness. As you cruise the blue highways from Washington to Florida, Fergus muses about hunters' patient wives, sharptail grouse, bamboo fly-rods, the coming of snow, bonefishing, Native American culture, lives worth living, the perils facing small towns, good dogs and good friends. There's a certain poetry that emanates from somewhere deep down, an echo of a primitive time, brought up-to-date by Airstream trailers, Coleman grills and, for better or worse, Eddie Bauer.
This is a good book for non-hunters and non-anglers, the most militant of whom assume avid sportsmen have little conscience or intellect. Fergus proves otherwise. He is an eloquent spokesman for the sporting life, not defensive and clearly thoughtful. If you've ever wanted to understand the allure of frigid mornings in high-plains cornfields, or soggy nights on the banks of an unknown river, or why a hunter would drive for two days for a fleeting glimpse of a bird too small for dinner on its own, read "The Sporting Road."

A darn good read
By A Customer
Fisherman? wingshooter? Read this book. A "sequel" of sorts to "A Hunter's Road," Fergus again hits the road in a book that, for generations to come, will be seen as a social commentary on rural America at the tail-end of the 20th Century. For us, though, it will merely serve to put more pressure on our marriages, as we load up our vehicles with rod and gun and head out of town, inspired by Fergus and friends' sporting adventures.

This book took me back to a time ... not long ago.
By Gerald Batson
Unfortunatly, for me, I was well past middle age (55) before I ever ventured into the woods with a shotgun looking for some game.
I was very excited about my first hunt and after three days of not seeing any game, I realized that during that time, I had changed ... from a novice hunter to a man in love with the outdoors.
I may not have seen any game but I saw the trees (seemed like the first time) ... and the grass, the river, the lake, the fields, the sun and shadows, the clouds drifting overhead.
I listened to the wind, the sounds the trees make when they rub together, the rustling of the grass.
In spite of the fact that I carried a weapon and moved thru the woods in a preditory mode (or maybe because of it) I experienced a sense of peace and wonder that I hadn't known since I was a child ... and I loved every moment of it.
I felt safe, at one with my surroundings ... I felt like I belonged there.
Reading this book brought me back to that place ... and it made me long to get back in the woods as soon as I can.
This book spoke to my heart.
Thank you Mr. Fergus.

Extra Nutty! Even More Letters from a Nut!, by Ted Nancy

Welcome to the world of Ted L. Nancy. Some have called him inspired, some have called him a goofball, and many have wondered who Ted really is. All we know is that Ted loves to write and it shows-Extra Nutty! is chock full of nut, a record of real live correspondence from America's favorite pen pal to a cross-section of this great nation. Extra Nutty! is bursting with all new letters showing Ted at his looniest.

Take, for example, this:

Dear Business Permits Dept.: I want to apply for a business permit in your fine city...I operate the Soup & Sleep Restaurants. You can either order soup or sleep. A hostess will greet you and you would say, "I'd like to sleep." She will lead you to a table where you can catch a few winks.

Or this:

Dear Helena Ocean & Dog Licensing Dept: I will stage the play "Mark Twain with Tourette's Syndrome.". . . Let me know what arrangements I need to make to store my anchovie tank at your seaport. Thank you. I await large crowds.

Or even this:

Dear Kmart: I have invented a male underpants liner...This liner fits right in your shorts and can be thrown away after 15 weeks. I have been wearing the same pair of underwear for 105 days now and although they feel a little stretchy they are perfectly clean.

Ted's unique way of looking at the world-and how the world responds to Ted's schemes--is captured here in this extra nutty, hugely hilarious collection.

Dear MS. Ramey:

Thank you very much for answering my letter concerning the haunted sponge I bought from a Ralphs store. Ralphs has been and always will be the only store I shop in for my food and sponge needs.

In your letter to me you said that I would be hearing from the supplier of this songe. I have not heard from them. And this sponge is bad.

Can someone from Ralphs come and get this sponge from me? This sponge is out to get me. I am afraid.

After I got your letter I went down to my basement and locked that sponge in a steel box and put a chain around that box. Then I wrapped that box in tape and put a shackle around that. Then I boarded up the basement door with over 1000 nails. Then I put a manacle on that door. Then I went upstairs to my room to get a good nights sleep.

At about 3 o'clock in the morning I woke up and looked down. That sponge was right by my bed. I am scared. Please help me.

Also, do you sell Brillo at your store?

When will I hear from the supplier? I need to know. Thank you for your reply.

Sincerely,

Ted L. Nancy

Ted Does it Again
By Dawn Gordon-Luks
Ted L. Nancy, has done it again. I didn't think it was possible to come remotely close to the side splitting humor in the first two books, but he managed to do it for a third time.
"Extra Nutty" had me in tears (from laughing) right from the start. As usual, I don't want to finish the book immediately, so I'm only reading a few pages a day.
Ted, or Jerry (who I honestly believe is the "real" author) please, please do a "Nut" book every year!

Toilet Side Reading
By A Customer
Ted L. Nancy writes strange letters to random companies in order to get odd responces. He gives a book load of hilarious but short conflicts to laugh about. Nancy pokes and picks at these random executives to exploit them for the laughs of the general public.
Nancy is a comedian who just wants to annoy these companies. He assumes the role of a circus clown, a man who plays a big baby, even a man interested in injecting ham into his blood stream. These are real companies. Of the group: Ruth Chris, Oscar Meyers, the Louisiana Superdome, even Olsmobile were all mailed by the mystery man. The book caused side splitting laughter to anyone who dares to crack the binding. short pages, fun to read, great for school. Overall I'd say Nancyis a hilarious man that makes it easy for the reader toget a laugh. I feel that it could even encourage some kids to do the same.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to listen to comedians like Jeff Foxworthy. Actually I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to laugh. This is a fun, light, read, My english teacher says, "It would be a good book to read while going to the bathroom."

The Murder of Biggie Smalls, by Cathy Scott

The Notorious B.I.G. exploded onto the hip-hop scene with his platinum-selling album Ready to Die in 1995. The life of B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls--born Christopher Wallace--had come a long way from the years spent in his Bed-Sty neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, where he dropped out of school at age seventeen to pursue the culture of the street and master his rapping style. It was on the street that Smalls began emceeing his original raps and was discovered by Sean "Puffy" Combs, who recognized Smalls's potential and took his gangsta image to the next level.

Within a few years he moved from the street to two successful rap albums, several million dollars in earnings, a Billboard Music Award in 1996 for Rapper of the Year, a marriage to R&B singer Faith Evans, a very public affair with L'il Kim, and hanging with Tupac Shakur, Marion "Surge" Knight, Puff Daddy, and Mary J. Blige. Despite becoming king of his world, Smalls didn't leave the life he rapped about behind. During his two-year rise up the charts he had several run-ins with the law, on charges ranging from assault to drugs and weapons possession. In 1994, both he and Combs were accused publicly by Suge Knight and Tupac's camp of setting up the shooting of Tupac Shakur, a charge they both vehemently denied.

The high life was brought to an end on March 9, 1997, after Biggie attended the Soul Train Awards in Los Angeles. Smalls was gunned down in his car much like friend-turned-enemy Shakur had been six months earlier.

Three years after Smalls's death, the police still have not made an arrest, and despite their early confidence that the case would be solved quickly, his murder continues to raise more questions than it answers.

Respected journalist Cathy Scott has traveled from Las Vegas to New York and Los Angeles, interviewing those involved with Smalls and reviewing court documents and police reports surrounding the case in order to tell the real story of the murder of Biggie Smalls.

The Murder of Biggie Smalls uncovers what those around Smalls and Shakur don't want to be revealed, including:

The possibility that Smalls may have owed a gang money and was killed to collect on the debt.

That Puffy Combs, Smalls's record producer, may have hired Crips members as bodyguards, who in turn killed Smalls over a financial beef.

That Combs may have been the intended victim instead of Smalls.

The investigation into Suge Knight, Tupac Shakur's record producer, and the suspicion that he may have masterminded Smalls's murder from his California prison cell.

Smalls's mother's belief that the federal government was involved in the mruder and that police have conspired not to solve the crime.

Why many surrounding Smalls feel the police have neglected the case to the point of letting the murderer get away--while being unwilling to offer any information themselves or assist the police in their efforts.

From Booklist
According to Scott and Biggie Smalls' mom, Voletta Wallace, Biggie and Tupac Shakur once were friends. After Shakur's bloody demise in a hail of bullets, however, Smalls and his associates were perceived as the killers, and speculation ran rampant that deadly retribution would be visited upon them, as part of the East Coast-West Coast gangsta-rap feud. Now, as Paul Harvey might say, Scott brings inquiring minds the rest of the story. Tupac blamed Biggie, in part, for the 1994 ambush that gave Shakur five bullets ("including [one to] the head") and cost him "$35,000 worth of jewelry." Shakur thought Smalls and Sean "Puffy" Combs had known the attack was in the offing. Later, of course, Shakur and then Smalls died in other ambushes. Coincidence? Hardly. Scott takes readers through the complex story of Smalls' murder, which perforce entails telling the stories of Shakur, Combs, Death Row label head and alleged mobster Suge Knight, and the whole East Coast-West Coast contretemps. Whereas others who have dealt with this stuff have often neglected to humanize the principals involved, Scott points up biographical details that bring them into focus as human beings. For setting the record straight as well as for limning a major pop music star, this is a valuable book. Mike Tribby

The picture painted of the investigation of Biggie's murder is more detailed than anything found in the music press. -- Nelson George, Africana Magazine

A Must Read for B.I.G. Fans
By Matt
Fans of the late, great Notorious B.I.G. will not be disappointed in Cathy Scott's compendium of research and notes about the mystery surrounding Big's murder.
The book was a bit redundant throughout, repeating information sometimes numerous times. Although is was strictly about the murder case, it would have been much better if Scott changed the theme into the life and times of Christopher Wallace leading up to his death. A Biography would have simply been more suiting.
The Murder of Biggie Smalls is a griping story, but much of the story was focused on other subjects. A whole chapter was dedicatd to the murder of Tupac Shakur. A whole chapter dedicated to Puff Daddy. There was a bit of speculation on the murder but there was a lot of redundant, boring information about police structures and such that aren't interesting.
Good or not, this is the only book touching on the subject of Christopher Wallace. Fans won't want to miss this one but casuals may want to skip out on it.

and other issues
By Nandor
I was disappointed by this book. I thought the book would be about BIG, but the book focused on people who really didn't have anything to do with him. The book doesn't focus on Christopher Wallace, instead it tells more about Tupac, Orlando Anderson, and other unimportant people. A lot of things are mentioned six times in the book. There are few new details. What I would have liked was more about his childhood, as Voletta Wallace is a source that shouldn't have been a problem. What exactly happened that night? Some people are keeping their mouth shut and that is a real shame. BIG is still the greatest, he should have gotten more respect than this, not only from Cathy Scott, but also from his "friends"!

An exciting page-turner
By Lora Shaner
This book, on the heels of Scott's THE KILLING OF TUPAC SHAKUR, is an exquisitely-drawn account of the life and death of another enormously popular rap artist who, like Tupac, died much too young. THE MURDER OF BIGGIE SMALLS reveals a life style that Mr. and Ms. Average Citizen find jaw-droppingly different from anything they've experienced. This book is a stream of light that penetrates all the dark corners and leads the uninitiated to an "Oh, yeah! I get it!" Those who "got it" twenty years ago when rap was born, will learn the answers to questions that have plagued rap afficionados since the lives (and potential) of their heroes began to be violently and senslessly cut short.

Intriguing premise taken in odd directions
By Karen A. Wyle
I'm rounding up from around a 3.5.

This is an intriguing, and ultimately a puzzling, book. I liked the premise: a few years after the end of World War II, a boy with mysteries where his father should be fills the gap with an ongoing daydream based on war movies. The role played by a character based on a local transvestite--or rather, the reason for this character and whether we are meant to share the boy's worries in connection with him--are left somewhat ambiguous. The turn the daydream takes in regard to the boy's counterpart is strange and not really explained. These are perhaps "literary fiction" tropes--and may be appreciated more by those who appreciate literary fiction in general.

The Waking Dream of T.E. Lawrence: Essays on his life, literature, and legacy, by C. Stang

Since the end of the First World War, the legend of 'Lawrence of Arabia' has enjoyed much currency in the popular imagination of the West. Behind this legend, however, is a man, Thomas Edward Lawrence, tortured and brilliant, a man whose life and literature reflect the modern consciousness and the war that indelibly marked it. Here in this volume are essays which seek to address what has been overlooked by the legend and to better understand the legacy of his presence in the twentieth century. Contributors explore Lawrence's relation to other major writers of his time, the colonial and postcolonial implications of his link with Arabia, his sexuality, and his status as cultural icon.

The best book I have ever read on Lawrence.
By David Stevens
Having read everything ever written on Lawrence, and even written a book myself, I can unconditionally state that this is the best book in the field. I unconditionally reccomend it to all readers, whether neophytes wanting to learn about the "myth behind the man," or seasonsed Lawrence experts. Although each essay shines in its own way, Stang's stands out as a major new contribution to Lawrence scholarship.

THE BEST BOOK ON LAWRENCE EVER
By David Stevens
Having read everything ever written on Lawrence, and even written a book on him myself, I can state without qualification that this book contains the best work ever produced on Lawrence "of Arabia." I reccomend it both to the first-time reader wanting to go beyond the Lawrence of legend, and to the long-time academic devotee of the military and intellectual career of this icon of the 20th century. Although each essay is excellent in its own way, Stang's stands out as a pillar of Lawrence scholarship.

He'll turn your kitchen into the espresso bar of your dreams-and the more aspiring baristas who read this book, the safer the country will be for the new world of lattes sweeping the nation." --Corby Kummer, The Atlantic Monthly

"Kenneth Davids's new book blends the myths and history with the technology and culture that create this nouveau art form we call 'espresso.' It's the perfect companion while enjoying the pleasures of this magnificent beverage." --Ted R. Lingle, director of the Speciality Coffee Association

Good information on espresso
By John O. Morton
Kenneth Davids writes a lot of information on history and the art of making espresso coffee. The only thing that really bothered me was his method of writing. At times it was very clear, then it dropped off when it became more interesting, almost like "running out of room." The section on machines and equipment was fairly good, but it didn't give more details on each type of machine.
The source section was very limited on where to buy machines or coffee. Could have been better at rating coffee and machines.
The book was a little hard to read with very small type, and the monotone brown color of the illustrations.

A great historical, cultural and sensual review of the brew.
By A Customer
Kenneth Davids has written an excellent book about the history of coffee and espresso and its development into a western cultural phenomenon. He describes all phases of coffee and espresso production and refinement from cultivation to recipes for use. An excellent read for a beginner or coffee guru.

Pretty much tells history of coffee. Provides in depth information on how to buy Espresso blends (various characteristics). Also explains the history of how Espresso was developed along with the machines that make it the joy it is. The author has a subtle humor which makes the book fun to read while teaching you about Coffee.

This Is Definitely A Guilty Little Pleasure
By gail k. powers
If you want to travel all over California and take in all the bizarre (aka definitely not mainstream) tourist sites along the way, buy this book! It provided me with all sorts of information. Imagine my shock when I found out that the site of the Heaven's Gate last supper was the Marie Calender's I frequent when I am in Carlsbad. Really, this book is a lot of fun. Provides a lot of trivia and gives books like LA Bizzaro and San Francisco Bizzaro a run for the $$$$ and also flip flops all over the state in search for crime scenes and other oddities.
Even if you don't use it as a tour guide and/or never step foot in California, this book will entertain and provide more than a few chuckles.

FUN! FUN! FUN!
By Joseph H. Race
I found this little gem in a back alley bookshop in Manila, and being a Californian, I had to have it. It has provided me with hours of fun and discussion, and with my friends, we have relived much of the trivia that occurred in our lifetimes and in LA County. The favorite response was,"I never knew that's where it happened," or "I can't beieve it, I drove by that location almost every day on the way to work." Part of the book declares "A Guide to Sites of Scandal,Mayhem and Celluloid in the Golden State," and it does all of that. There are a lot of sites to do with Marilyn Monroe, Ronald Reagan, Marlon Brando, the Manson Clan, Rodney King, Linda Ronstadt, and other well-known people and events. A excellent book for conversations and tours if you can afford the gas...or maybe do it from the armchair. Buy it - good return for your buck!

MISSED A COUPLE
By Eric Rachut
Excellent on detail and accuracy, heavy on rock 'n' roll; some odd omissions
(e.g., entry on Palace Hotel in San Francisco does not mention that President Harding died there in 1923; the list of sites from Hitchcock's picture Vertigo omits the Argonaut bookstore [called Argosy bookstore in the movie - both because of the gold associated with the city]). Below the belt comments about Ronald Reagan.

Religions of the Silk Road: Overland Trade and Cultural Exchange from Antiquity to the Fifteenth Century, by R. Foltz

During the latter decades of the nineteenth century, popular European fascination with the world beyond reached an all-time high. The British and French empires spanned the globe, and their colonial agents sent home exotic goods and stories. The Silk Route dates from this romantic period, in name if not in reality. In the century since its invention as a concept, the Silk Route has captured and captivated the Western imagination. It has given us images of fabled cities and exotic peoples. Religions of the Silk Road tells the story of how religions accompanied merchants and their goods along the overland Asian trade routes of pre-modern times. It is a story of continuous movement, encounters, mutual reactions and responses, adaptation and change. Beginning as early as the eighth century BCE, Israelite and Iranian traditions travelled eastwards in this way, and they were followed centuries later by the great missionary traditions of Buddhism, Christianity, Manichaeism, and Islam. The Silk Route was more than just a conduit along which these religions hitched rides East; it was a formative and transformative rite of passage, and no religion emerged unchanged at the end of that arduous journey.

"An absolute gem...well researched and well-written." - Jerry H. Bentley, Editor, Journal of World History

"The first comprehensive description of the presence and interplay of various religions in Central Asia." - Hans. J. Klimkeit, Bonn University

From the Publisher
"Foltz has done a very good job of putting together the various pieces of evidence for the different religions on the Silk Road...a fine synthesis, which up to now is the only one of its kind. For all interested in the present global relationship between religions, the history of that relationship in Central Asia is of the greatest interest." --Hans-J. Klimkeit, Director, Religionswissenschaftliches Seminar, Bonn U.

Nice story, not well told
By Michigan Rifleman
This is a wonderful story of the religious and other cultual interchanges in central Asia a thousand years ago. Unfortunately, Mr. Foltz does not have the ability to tell that story in an engaging manner. Foltz, he admits this, digests a huge amount of information in order to tell this story. The result is that it is not enough for the academic specialist and not well enough told for the generalist. Thus the text suffers. Still, as a short text that introduces the whole realm of the religious history of central Asia, there is much to be learned. This text is only a small taste of the variagated history of the area.

Religion handbook for people interested in Central Asia
By Magalini Sabina
I came around this book because it is often cited in books on Central Asia, the Silk Road, Buddhism and also in the last book I read on Xuanzang. The Authors that use it as a citation do not want to explore more deeply some concepts they are treating at the moment so they indicate this text with such an encompassing title as the ultimate resource for omitted information. So when you finally see the book, the small dimensions dampen a little the enthusiasm.

Certainly, the subject is large and the chronological time interval extends from the first millenium BCE to the fifteenth centure CE, while the geographical boundaries go from China to Persia and from North India to Russia considering all the Silk Road extensions. Simplification of such a vast panorama is evidently necessary and this is precisely what the Author has done. He has succeeded in condensing the history of well known and less well known religions into a comprehensive didactic text.

The first chapter states the epistemiological guidelines utilized: the importance of trade for diffusion of religion, the supposed role of women in the transmission of faiths, the division between proselytizing and non proselytizing religions and the difference in acceptance of new beliefs from the center to the periphery, the consideration of the practicality and belonging to the dominant social class as the main drive to acceptance of new forms of faith.

In the following chapters Zoroastrism, Buddhism, Judaism, Nestorian Christianity and Islam are all described and a brief story of their expansion and fortunes is delineated. The book makes two really good points in these chapters one is on the syncretism of all these religions in time and space on the Silk Roads and the other is the concept of Central Asia as a refuge for heretics. Another interesting aspect for non accademics is the description of less well known sects such as the Radanites (merchant Jews from France that practically converted the Khazars)and the description of the Kushan reign that disappeared forever in the sands of history.

Finally there is a wide overview on the religious conquest by Islam of the entire Central Asia and the fading away of all other religious beliefs. The role of sufis is emphatized more than that of the sword. There is one chapter called "Ecumenical mischief" that seems like a small essay inserted in this otherwise schematic text, that dwells on the attempts of missionaries of all faiths to convert the Mongols and on the intestine quarrels between Nestorians and Muslims in the Il-Khan lands. The indepth outlook of these episodes makes one desire the whole book were written with such a research detail since the bird view approach is one of its defects.

Accademic reviewers affirm Prof. Folz makes a few mistakes in dates and historical interpretations and that he has utilized exclusively English sources. The general reader, naturally, does not capture these subtle details. However, since this book is really very cited and has the great advantage of covering such a wide time and space span, a new and revised edition would be welcomed.

The reading is fluent and sometimes it is necessary to reread in order to fully appreciate all the information. The Notes and the Bibliography are rich, so this text can be of help to students, entertain historical fans even if it does fall short of completeness and real satisfaction.

A Good Introduction to Religion in Central Asia
By Suchos
This is a short introduction to how major world religions interacted and changed along the Silk Road. The book assumes a certain amount of background in middle and far eastern history (and a background will make the reading far more comprehensible), because in a 144-page monograph an in-depth discussion of religious and political histories of Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam is simply not possible.

The book is not presented in a strictly chronological fashion. The first chapter is a (sometimes disjointed) introduction of general historiographical issues. Chapters 2 through 5 cover Iranian/Jewish religions, Buddhism, Christianity/Manichaeism and Islam respectively. Chapter 6 covers religious competition during the Mongol period, and Chapter 7 discusses the modern predominance of Islam in Central Asia. As a result, chapter 3 (on Buddhism) can be a bit confusing when it refers to the impact of Islamic history, which is not presented until Chapter 5 -- and then only superficially.

This arrangement can be very helpful for a reader who wants to concentrate on a specific religion, and the book is very well-sourced, so that a serious student knows where to look for more detail. But it is probably not helpful for the beginner.

I would recommend this book for a student who has taken a few classes on Middle or Far Eastern history, and who has at least some background in Islam, Christianity and/or Buddhism. I would also recommend it to anyone who needs a general introduction before a more in-depth study.
