Fifteen more times in these Sister Fidelma stories, Tremayne's Celtic sleuth hits the road and sorts out crime in seventh- century Ireland. Does the peripatetic investigator ever go home? Never, in six published novels; once, in the title story of a collection that takes her from apprenticeship as a Brehon advocate through disillusionment with her House of Blessed Brigid to worldly fame as the King's smart sister. Newcomers to the series (Valley of the Shadow, Mar. 2000) will be fascinated by a utopian presentation of unfamiliar social and religious history. Fans will learn little new about either Fidelma or her Ireland and may groan over repeated descriptive epithetsfrom her urchin grin to strands of her rebellious red hairbut theyll also be amazed by how the short form forces Tremayne to economize on detail and prune subplots. While too many clues are clumsy (``Holy Blood''), marring otherwise clever plotting (``The Horse That Died for Shame''), and too much talk (``Tarnished Halo'') has to compensate for too little character development (``A Canticle for Wulfstan''), the best stories economically evoke Fidelmas world as they illustrate her creators debts to Agatha Christiefor example, in the twisted ends of ``Invitation to a Poisoning'' and ``At the Tent of Holofernes.'' Enjoyable mystery short story collection

Though Sister Fidelma has appeared in four novels, she has also starred in fifteen short stories that make up this wonderful anthology, HEMLOCK AT VESPERS. Peter Tremayne places his stories in order of publication date and allows the audience to observe how much the author and the character have matured. Readers learn why Sister Fidelma changes her references to herself, dissociates from a religious community, and how that impacts the seventh century amateur sleuth.

All the stories in this anthology are well written and self-contained as the essence of the main character comes alive each time while retaining a consistent level of excellent storytelling. That enables the audience to understand and empathize with Sister Fidelma. The stories also provide incredible insight into "Dark Ages" Ireland without slowing down the pacing. Mr. Tremayne is one the leaders of the historical mystery whether the plot is full-length novel (see VALLEY OF THE SHADOW) or a short story.

Not to my taste, should probably be read with a grain of salt.

I give this short story collection 2 stars because I don't like it. I don't hate it, which would mean 1 star. Although I am a lover of short stories, this collection is not for me. The language is unsophisticated, the plots simplistic, and the characters and their actions unbelievable. For instance, in the beginning the young man supposed to be assisting Sister Fidelma, looks up, bites his lip, etc., too many times to be believed. There are other facial expressions and actions that could have been called into play. Overall, these stories seem written more for a YA audience rather than adults. Although from what I've read in other reviews, many of the historical facts are to be questioned at least. I cannot recommend this book and live in hope that the novels are better.

Good Mysteries, Good History

Contrary to Dr. Scheibler's charge, Tremayne's Sister Fidelma mysteries accurately reflect the history of mid-7th century Ireland. Tremayne did not have to fictionalize the setting to make it "amenable to 20th century feminists." The Ireland of those years was as he describes it, notwithstanding an occasional minor anachronism. Even some Catholic histories of the saints acknowledge that Brigid was consecrated a bishop, although some also contend that a nervous bishop said the wrong prayer. Nor is there any doubt that Ireland was then an intellectual capital, with a long-established Brehon law system. There was, as Tremayne recounts, a spirited (pardon the pun) debate going on between the Irish and Roman churches. Some Irish religious practices were, indeed, adaptations from the Druidic system that Christianity supplanted. There is also no question that there were religious communities of married couples, as there are today -- I can refer Dr. Scheibler to one if he'd like. He apparently takes such great offense at Tremayne's reconstruction of a period of history with which he's uncomfortable that he has taken leave of his critical judgement. Speaking as a Christian conservative enough to oppose ordination of women, except perhaps as deaconesses, I am nonetheless very impressed with Tremayne's plotting (locked room mysteries, love triangles, even a ghost story) and characterization. Hence, I greatly enjoy the Sister Fidelma series, however much I may disagree with its theology. "Hemlock At Vespers" naturally lacks the depth that the novels can boast, but this anthology is a marvelous introduction to a religiese with the deductive abilities of Holmes. (In the novels, she occasionally has a "Watson" of sorts.) The book begins with a story in which a visitor to Brigid's community in Kildare dies, poisoned during dinner, within everyone's view. The collection concludes with a marvelous story in which Fidelma solves the mystery of the ghost haunting an innkeeper and his wife. One story, set in France, features a very diagreeable abbot whose disdain of married clerics (celibacy was not mandatory for Catholic priests until long after this time) makes him a grudging participant in solving a murder. Another tale is set in Rome, where Fidelma finds that it often fails to live up to its designation as the Holy City. Like Harriet Klausner, I highly recommend "Hemlock at Vespers." I do quibble with her use of the term "Dark Ages" Ireland. As Tremayne notes, this period was rather an "Age of Golden Enlightenment," especially in education. Newcomers will, I think, be fascinated by this young, intelligent and strong-willed advocate of the Brehon courts who has also taken religious vows. Long-time fans of Fidelma will enjoy this collection of snapshots, the short stories that inspired the novels.

Hendin offers an intriguing and comprehensive study of violent women, their motivations, the conditions that provoke them and the feelings of fear, anger and erotic desire they can inspire in others. Though wordy, hyper-detailed prose and an overflow of academic theory on political, social and gender studies slow the book's pace in sections, the author persuasively argues that violent women "highlight and dramatize the pressures on women who are not violent and on a culture still absorbing their changing roles." A professor of English and Italian-American studies at New York University, Hendin is at her best when analyzing specific cases-from mythology, film, fiction, poetry and contemporary society-and when discussing how these women can make both conservatives and liberals uneasy. From the Lorena Bobbitts and Susan Smiths who maim or kill their lovers or relatives to the Bonnie Parkers and Lynette Frommes who wreak terror on strangers, the dangerous dames that populate this book use violence for numerous and often contradictory reasons. Motivated by egotism, rage, sorrow or self-hatred, they may try to show their strength by killing off their weaker-and more traditionally feminine-characteristics, like vulnerability and passivity, or they may rebel against a patriarchal society in which the subjugation and abuse of women seems to be condoned. With her background in literature, Hendin brings more insight to her analyses of books and poetry than she does to her coverage of films and news media. Anneke and Karl reluctantly agree to help out the San Francisco police because so many of the suspects have ties back to Ann Arbor. Cute--food is a four letter word. Not enough detecting

Lindsay Summers probably had it coming. After all, if you're a complete witch, sleep with a married man, try to get major food groups outlawed, blackmail your advisor, and produce bad research for your disertation, you are probably going to get poisoned. The only question is, who is going to do it.
Just about everyone at the San Francisco sports bar where Lindsay is doing her 'research' are candidates. Even our heroine, Anneke Haagen was just about mad enough to do something violent. But only one of them actually killed Lindsay. Anneke and her police lieutenant Karl volunteer to help the San Francisco police. Better yet, they bring on their secret weapon, Zoe Kaplan, 19-year-old journalism student, to investigate. It's just as well that they do. Zoe turns out to be the only character in the novel who does much investigation at all. While Anneke eats her way through San Francisco, Zoe puts herself in danger and digs out all of the facts.
BETTER THAN SEX is well written, amusing, and offers fine characterization for the minor characters. Unfortunately, the primary characters, Anneke and Karl, don't actually play much of a role in the mystery. Maybe they should have focussed on their honeymoon.
I enjoyed reading this book but think Holtzer could have toned down the food and turned up the mystery.

A good mysty series just got better

Even on their honeymoon in romantic and picturesque San Francisco, Ann Arbor police Lieutenant Karl Genesko and his new bride Anneke Haagen cannot get away from murder. The newlyweds are eating brunch at the trendy bistro Maize and Blue when a food researcher at Anneke's table suddenly keels over and dies. Somebody put poison in the deceased's tomato juice and since Karl is on the scene when the death took place, he is called by his San Francisco counterpart to explore the Ann Arbor connection.
Most of the people sitting at the table where the victim was killed had some kind of tie to Ann Arbor. The victim, Michigan graduate Lindsay Summers, was obsessive about food. She wanted legislation passed to force people to eat right and she had the ear of a Michigan Congressman who jumped on her bandwagon and made it an issue. Karl, Anneka and the SFPD work together to find the killer but in the end it is Zoe, Anneka's friend at the university who risks her life to solve the case.
In this long running series, Susan Holtzer has a knack of creating characters that will appeal to her audience ensuring that they will want to read all forthcoming books. BETTER THAN SEX is a who-done-it with a lot of humor intertwined into the story line, thus ensuring that the tension never becomes unbearable. The great aspect of this series is that Ms. Holtzer makes us believe that passionate love can be found at fifty as easily as it can at twenty-five.

A Serious Message Between the Humor & Action

Anneke Haagen has married the man of her dreams, Karl Genesco, former professional football player and now Ann Arbor policeman, and is on her honeymoon in the Foodie capital of the world, San Francisco. Between the souffles, fusion, calories, carbs and sensualness of what we eat, a critic of "unhealthy" food is murdered and the suspects are legion.

This is a light book (too many characters, its one fault) but the author, is obviously "fed up" (pardon the pun) with the new moral police, what I like to call the NPR crowd. Namely, the huge cottage industry of academia/bureaucrats who revel in telling the general public what and how we should eat, drink, smoke, wear, invest, travel - all with the rabid conviction of a televangelist on a last crusade against Satan. In this case, it's our public servants who want to tax "bad food" and force us to eat "correct" foods for our own good, you understand. The bad guy is an obvious take on Atkins (whose diet did wonders for me a couple of years ago I might add).

The perpetrator of the crime is a surprise - well, not really when one considers [plot spoiler] DC and the headiness of power. Throughout, Anneke has witty and sometimes deep insights about her fellow citizen and their motivations. The honeymoon is less-than-romantic since all emotions of desire and love center on food and not people. Nice read.

Drawing on twenty years of feminist scholarship it suggests that women workers not only contributed to the wealth of the English economy but through that contribution influenced the direction and progress of the nation's manufacturing industry. This portrayal of women as central and proactive lies in stark contrast to the definition of women workers as cheap, malleable, poorly skilled, and expendable labor that typifies historical account. This book explains the processes by which male workers undermined the value of women in the interests of their own status both at work and at home. It examines the processes by which work became gendered, the mechanisms by which gender hierarchies became established or recreated both at work and at home, the forces underlying the creation of apparently more hostile relationships between them and women during industrialization and she attempts to explain the failure of men and women to unite in order to resist exploitation by employers. Above all it emphasizes the emergence of industrial society in the 19th century as one which was centrally defined by gender.

Among the most persistent European myths about Africa, explain the editors of this anthology, is that homosexuality is "absent or incidental" in African societies. Since black Africans were felt to be the most primitive of people--the closest to nature--it followed that they must be the most heterosexual, their "sexual energies and outlets devoted exclusively to their 'natural' purpose: biological reproduction." That the field work of early anthropologists didn't always support this assumption merely led researchers to suppress their findings, or to fail to inquire too closely of subjects who were reluctant, in any case, to discuss their sexual lives with outsiders. The contributors to this volume argue convincingly that even native denials of homosexuality are often politically motivated (the sexual values of the West having permeated most of these cultures), and should be regarded as skeptically as the accounts of Western anthropologists, who in most cases have not seriously investigated same-sex patterns, "failing to report what they do observe, and discounting what they report." In the essays collected here, dating from the colonial period to the present and covering the major regions of black Africa, evidence of same-sex marriages, cross-dressing, role reversal, and premarital peer homosexuality challenges the myth and calls for further study. --Regina Marler

An Eye Opening Book

Here is a book with oral histories and folklore tales from ethnographers that went to Africa. The book is an eyeopening one into the sexuality aspect of Africans often challenging theories of sexuality. It is an excellent book to answer to the question of How & Why Does Same Sex Sexual Behavior Varies Cross Culturally? It was writing an essay on this topic that got me to this book, I have always wanted to know about this issue since there has been a lot of denial from African colleagues but once I have read the first few pages of the book that 'denial' and "shh" feelings that exist within many Africans, was brought to light. The same smoothness and revelation is experienced throughout the book. The book seperates Africa into four regional sections to illustrate the diversity of African culture within that vast continent. It is very easy to read and simple too. If you are a book worm, you will love this one. It is the book for History, Anthropology or Gender Study students or those with interest in the above mention + Sexuality. The book now occupies a special place in my selective collection, get one too, I am sure there will be no regrets!

Awesome geographical and historical range!

The first book to attempt to survey homosexualities across (sub-Saharan) Africa is also a very good one. At a time when certain East African leaders are trying to hold onto power by scapegoating homosexuality as "un-African," Murray and Roscoe show that there are and have been a wide range of roles in "traditional" African cultures for those who love persons of their own sex. Once this is established - and it is established beyond any reasonable doubt - most readers will probably be more interested in the parts of the book dealing with contemporary individuals (including a young Kikuyu's male's memoir, Amory's chapter on the changing conceptions on the Swahili coast, and an explanation of the view in Lesotho and elsewherre that two women cannot have "sex," so that their physical relations are not seen as "sexual").

The book concludes by looking at the "social construction" of homosexualities by cross-tabulating societies with a kind of homosexuality (with relationships structured by age, structured by gender, or more-or-less egalitarian ones) with other structures (e.g., of inheritance, postpartum taboos) in the same societies. No absolute, categorical patterns emerge. I.e., there are correlations, but no clear "if x, then homosexuality y" conclusions.

Western compilation of some Sub-Saharan Same-Sex Concepts

I read the 2001 paperback of the originally 1998 book. It was edited by two US anthropologists/activists. The title should have read "Studies in Sub-Saharan Homosexualities". It features some dozen authors, virtually all of which seem to be Westerners also. Which may not make it easier to convince those who say that "African homosexualities" are a colonial invention. However, the content makes it clear that the colonialists' influence had been rather in the reverse, downpressing African homosexualities and brainwashing the new generations of the installed African elite. The term "homosexuality" is Western of course. Coined by an Austrian in Germany in the 19th century, melting Greek and Latin, describing a Western concept. (Which is also true for the term "heterosexuality".) Of course anywhere, you will find humans who fall in love and / or engage in sexuality which may be transcribed as homosexuality by the Western gender concept. There are many differing gender concepts in Africa, however, some of which get mentioned in this book, others not. Read for example When Men Are Women: Manhood Among The Gabra Nomads Of East Africa or Male Daughters, Female Husbands: Gender and Sex in an African Society, both books NOT describing homosexualities.

The book uses contemporary and colonial sources (such as colonial court cases against "homosexualities".) as well as studies in anthropology. For a more authentic grasp on the material, more African sources themselves would have been more helpful. Probably a matter of availability. Still, some African authors could have shed a more thorough light on certain concepts. Especially old colonial sources are bound to be vague and of the not quite overstanding kind. Elaboration on concepts is something else than these compilation listings in a nut shell.

Still, this book offers a nice updated and important Western entry into the subject matter. (There were German collectors and publishers of the entire world's "homosexualities" in the early 20th century). Can't wait to read some African perspectives some day.

This book covers more (Black) African peoples NOT than it does.

However much or little this book may be flawed, for the time being one shouldn't engage in a denial argument without having read this one.

Although packaged as a book for general readers, Anime: From Akira to Princess Mononoke is a dreary academic study that showcases the clichés of "higher" criticism but tells the reader little about the art form. The potentially interesting points that Susan Napier raises (e.g., Are characters with blond, pink, or purple hair really perceived as Japanese?) are ignominiously buried in arcane jargon. And she too often discusses other authors' theories instead of anime itself. In a section on Ranma 1/2, she refers to various books, but in a footnote she cites only a single published interview with series creator Rumiko Takahashi. If Napier regards the Ranma series as significant, why didn't she interview the artist?

The text is riddled with errors, which suggests that the author hasn't watched the films carefully. For example, she cites a "brilliant" essay referring to the loss of all electrical power in Japan (a symbol of "modernization under the patriarchal system") in episode 3 of Neon Genesis Evangelion. No blackout occurs in this episode. In episode 6, however, all the electricity in Japan is requisitioned to power a superweapon. From Akira to Princess Mononoke is the sort of book churned out by professors to satisfy publish-or-perish rules. --Charles Solomon

Are we reviewing the same book?

I am a huge fan of anime and also of the Japanese culture and history. I figured that this book would be interesting. I heard good things about it and bad things about it but wanted to judge it myself.

First - it was first published in 2000 which means that the anime scene has already changed greatly. In fact, many of the points made in the book would have been outdated by the time it was printed.

Second - she seems to focus a lot of sex. Now that may be because much of her information, and the anime she selected to view, came from University students or stores who supplied students. The idea that pornography is a _major current_ within the world of anime is a interesting but flawed statement. Erotic anime makes up a small corner of the anime produced in Japan and it has greater sales abroad than in its homeland. In fact, I would go as far as to say that Non-Japanese would be the main target for this type of anime - which means trying to understand the Japanese male-female relationship via adult anime is also flawed. But it might tell us alot about American and European college students.

She has tons of interesting points to make but the foundations she builds to hold them up seem weak and shaky. For example, she talks about men's insecurity and their need for Mecha using sci-fi shows where most of the pilots are female. She uses sources about American Superheros to talk about Japanese characters.

Also, while she did mention a Tenchi movie, she seems to skip the Tenchi Muyo! TV shows. What about Dominion Tank Police, Gall Force, Martian Successor Nadesico, Wings of Honneamise, any of the Gundam shows or even Dirty Pair? I don't think she even once writes about CLAMP!

In other words, while she does get into detail about a few areas of anime, she is far from covering it all. So buyer beware and buy it used.

I would also suggest _The Erotic Anime Movie Guide_ by Helen McCarthy and Jonathan Clements for the history and true understanding of erotic anime. For understanding mainstream anime I would suggest _Anime Explosion_ by Patrick Drazen, _Samurai From Outer Space_ by Antonia Levi and _The Anime Companion_ by Gulles Poitras. ^_^

Ante la insuficiencia de textos criticos sobre animación este libro proporciona un buen panorama sobre algunos de las más importantes constantes del género "anime". Descalificarlo por no ser lo que no es me parece bastante injusto. Susan Napier no pretende ofrecer un trabajo totalizador (en efecto la parte estética del anime no está suficientemente desarrollada), sino una introducción a los temas y obsesiones de un género de la cultura popular contemporánea particularmente interesante. Un buen trabajo de teoría y crítica sin duda.

A very educational look at Anime

Aside from a great cover, this book is an extremely interesting read, taking a whole new look at anime. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this isn't a guide to anime movies, or even anime in general. Rather, it takes fairly popular titles and explores the meaning behind the movies. A very interesting look at anime through the eyes of a professional. Enhances the experience.

For hardcore Evil Dead fans, this is a MUST!

I first got hooked on Evil Dead about 6-7 years ago when my brother rented Evil Dead II. Later that year I watched the other movies in the series, and have loved it ever since. The problem is, so little information was available about the movies. This year I found a number of fan sites, which were great, but still did not give thorough detail of everything from Within The Woods (forerunner to The Evil Dead) to Army Of Darkness. I ended up buying all of the special edition DVDs for all movies and learned a TREMENDOUS amount about the movies, but I still wanted more detail.
I heard of this book a few weeks ago and finally picked up a copy last night. So far I've read a little over 100 pages of it, and let me tell you, if you worship Evil Dead, if you MUST know EVERYTHING you possibly can from BEFORE Within The Woods to Army Of Darkness, and want heavy detail, THIS IS IT!
For the casual fan, don't waste your time. It will probably be boring to you, as this book is clearly targeted for the hardcore Evil Dead fan.
The book includes a number of rare and unpublished pictures (albeit black & white), dates of filming, locations, who did what in all the movies, TONS of behind the scenes pictures and stories, interviews with many of the cast and crew, and A LOT MORE! BTW, I picked all of this up in the first 100 pages, so I'm not even half done with the book yet.
MANY pages devoted to how scenes were filmed, equipment used, how camera work was done, how the woods chasing scenes are done, and much more! More detail than on the DVD commentaries!!
This book includes a complete filmography for the crew, and even tells of some of their other work as well. From their first super 8 movies long before Evil Dead, up to some of their latest movies, but the bulk of the book is about Evil Dead. There are movie poster pictures, excerpts from Fangoria and other magazines from the early years, newspaper articles, and stories of hardships the cast and crew faced to bring us these movies.
Couple this book with the web links in the back, and the special edition DVDs for all movies, and you will have enough Evil Dead knowledge to keep you happy for a long time! The only way you will learn more is to interview Bruce Campbell or Sam Raimi.
Suffice to say, if you worship the movie (or are just a really big fan), you will love this book! LOTS of reading!

A wonderful look at the first movie in need of an update.

It really says something about the quality of this book when most of the reviews can only grumble about that lack of color pictures, or the lack of in depth study given to Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn and Army of Darkness. While the lack of color pictures did not bother me at all, the rather abbreviated look at the making of the two sequels (as well as Raimi's other movies) left me wanting, especially in comparison to the wonderful amount of information in the first half on how this tightly knit team of friends became one of the most beloved cult movie producers of the 1980s and 1990s. Quite literally the books reads like a fly on the wall look at the filmmakers baptism by fire, then it shifts gears to..."and they went on to make this, this, and this and lived happily ever after." A little more depth and time about the professional differences in making Dead II and Army of Darkness from the first movie would have been rewarding. Not helping are the concluding chapters which offer nothing but detailed descriptions of the on screen action in the ED trilogy with parenthetical comments by Bruce Campbell. Author Bill Warren refers to it as a DVD commentary on paper. To this reader it just felt like padding. Nonetheless, more than a few fans will find reflections of themselves in this group of movie makers to be and I don't think any admirer of Raimi and Company will want to do without it. Highly recommended.

Groovy!

Bill Warren has done a hell of a job with this overview of Sam Raimi's cult-classic film series. Filled with insight into the process of low-budget filmmaking, this book is just as indispensible to Raimi fans as the movies themselves. Flawless!
