Writing in uninspired "what-if" mode, ex-U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican Flynn and Moore (The French Connection) jam yet another tale of Triumphant Good through the eye of the millennial needle. Following the death of Pope John Paul II, the College of Cardinals convenes to elect a new pope. While the whole world watches, an Irish cardinal named Comiskey tells a moving story about his seminary friend Bill Kelly, an ex-priest-turned-fisherman, who once saved a group of fellow seminarians from drowning. Unable to reach a consensus after seven days, the cardinals end up casting their votes for the able fisherman. Bill himself has a vision that foretells his good fortune, and although he is a widower with four children, he takes up the mandate and the name of Peter, and heads for Rome with his family. Once established, Pope Peter II/Bill sets out to make everyone happy: the Jews, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Northern Irish Protestants, even homosexuals. Although some interesting modern Church issues are touched on frankly here, such as the controversial deeds of Pius XII and the Catholic and Orthodox conflicts of interest in Africa, theocratic tub-thumping and leaden dialogue sink a feel-good story that's hard to feel good about. Cowritten by former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican Flynn and French Connection author Moore, this entertaining novel treads the fine line between being satirical and inspirational. The authors tell the story of a regular guy who becomes pope. It's not a comedy, but, like Forrest Gump, it treats the average-joe-stumbles-into-notoriety theme with an engaging mix of humor and seriousness. After Bill Kelly, a professional fisherman, widower, and former priest, is mistakenly elected as the first American pope (this isn't as improbable as it sounds), he travels the world, becoming a kind of folk hero, the ordinary man's pope. Along the way, he discovers that he is, much to his surprise, a very special man indeed. There are so many ways this novel could have failed, considering its unusual (and potentially offensive) premise, but from start to finish, it is a vastly endearing tale, the kind of feel-good story that is bound to attract an audience. Recommend it to anyone looking for another box of chocolates. David Pitt

Eh...

While this constitutes a very interesting and entertaining concept, the author has failed in the execution. The writing is stiff, the characterization weak, and the willingness of the reader to accept the story is badly bruised by the failure to develop the conflict within the story. Still, this work is well worthy of attention due to the wonderful concept, the possibilities it presents, and the knowledge one can gain of the Church through the fiction media. Three out of five stars.

Uneven; not good

I wanted to like this book because Ray Flynn is a fellow Catholic and a fellow Bostonian, and the basic idea of a pope being elected who is a widower with children has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, there are too many problems. The writing is very uneven; in places it isn't bad, but much of the dialogue is wooden and awkward. The theology is startlingly bad, especially in a work purportedly by a former ambassador to the Vatican. Or perhaps it was very badly edited. In any case I stopped reading altogether when I reached the point two thirds of the way through where the Eucharist was casually said to be symbolically the Body of the Lord (not REALLY!). That, of course, is the Protestant position; it has no place in a book that's supposed to be about Catholics.

An interesting premise . . .

Perhaps Ambassador Flynn is a better storyteller than a writer; perhaps someone other than Robin Moore should have worked with him -- because I agree that some better editing would have made this book much more appealing. It's obvious to this reviewer that Ambassador Flynn knows painfully well the tension existing between career diplomats and political appointees. It's also obvious to me that the Ambassador is himself a devout man who deeply loves his Church.
This being said, this novel, while interesting in its premise, fails to live up to its potential. Others have pointed out difficulties with actual Catholic dogma and practice; I picked up on many similar points. (Yes, a layman CAN be elected Pope!; if someone not a bishop is elected, he is immediately so consecrated (it's been a couple hundred years -- but it is possible), etc. Reforming the Code of Canon Law regarding marriage is something which has been taken up by at least two other authors (Morris West and Andrew Greeley); Pope "Bill"'s solution doesn't seem likely.
In addition, someone really needed to check this book for continuity. Pope "Bill"'s age is described differently at least twice; likewise the age of his wife; the length of their courtship; and the length of their marriage!
Others have also mentioned the "real" characters only thinly veiled. I'll add another: Monsignor Tim Shanahan, rector of the North American College, and native of St. Louis, is undoubtably Monsignor (now Archbishop) Tim Dolan -- who was rector of the North American College while the Ambassador was in Rome, and who is a native of St. Louis! I'll go so far as to suggest that in some cases, Ambassador Flynn didn't even bother to disguise names! (Cardinal Egan of New York!)
I don't think that this book was either as bad as some of the one-star reviewers would suggest -- but seriously question the legitimacy of some of the two-sentence five-star reviews as well. Nor is this book easily "pigeonholed" as far as being "progressive" or "traditionalist". Pope "Bill" has views that would anger (and please) both sides of these debates.
I'm glad I read it -- but it's no "The Shoes of the Fisherman".
