The Merchant of Venice: Texts and Contexts (The Bedford Shakespeare Series), by William Shakespeare

This edition of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice reprints the Bevington edition of the play along with documents and illustrations thematically arranged to offer a richly textured understanding of early modern culture and Shakespeare’s work within that culture. The texts include maps, woodcuts, sermons, statutes, early modern documents reflecting Christian attitudes toward Jews and Jewish reactions to these attitudes, excerpts from the Bible on moneylending as well as contemporary discourses on usury and commerce, anti-Catholic tracts, travel accounts, diplomatic reports, scenes from a morality play about the corrupting effects of treatment of aliens, conduct literature, and contemporary treatises on the role of women. The documents illuminate religious controversy at the time of Shakespeare’s play, some of his sources, the place of Venice in the early modern English imagination, merchant culture, and marriage, sexuality, and friendship in the period.  Editorial features designed to help readers relate the play to historical documents include an engaging general introduction, an introduction to each thematic group of documents, headnotes and glosses for the primary documents (presented in modern spelling), and an extensive bibliography.

The text of the play only, no notes, no introductory material of value, and a misleading guide to the audiobook version
By Robert C Ross
This version of the tragedy has almost nothing to recommend it other than that it contains a link to a free audiobook version.

The text is fairly clear, but there is only a very short introduction and no footnotes. There are a few grainy black and white photos and drawings, with attribution of artist or source.

The "free" audiobook might be quite good but there were links to 20 different versions, none of which matched the cover of this book, and all of which were "free" only with a trial 30 day subscription.

For an annotated version with good clarity and larger text, with a helpful introduction, try The Merchant of Venice (The Annotated Shakespeare) with Professor Burton Raffel (Editor) and Harold Bloom (Contributor) adding very useful information to the text of the play.

Entry level shakespeare for naysayers
By Austin W.
"Hath not a jew eyes?"

The Merchant of Venice is probably the best way to convince friends that Shakespeare wasn't just some quack who made a lot of phallic innuendos and loved watching people kill themselves. If you wanted one reason as to why you should read this book, give it a spin, and ask yourself who the heroes and the vallains are of this book. The fact that it's difficult to decipher who you should be cheering for or jeering at suggests at a certain depth and complexity that is easily understood and equally relatable.

To quote a New York Times article:

“How much do you know about Shakespeare,” I once asked a friend who has committed ... She replied, “Not as much as he knows about me."

Remembering history
By L. Speyer
_Merchant_ is a hard play to swallow -- brilliantly written and scathing in content. One worries about the futures of all the characters, most of whom are so flawed as to inspire only pity for their respective beloveds. The deus ex machina ending, in which Portia conjures happiness all around out of thin air -- except, of course, for Shylock, is merely bewildering.

Yet _Merchant_ should not be forgotten. One gets the impression that Shakespeare *wanted* his audience to be uncomfortable with some of the horrible prejudices depicted, and one definitely feels challenged. In addition, the extent to which we have moved on from the anti-Semitism so apparently cavalierly brandished in this 'comedy' leaves us with the responsibility to remember and be aware of prejudices that could be recalled to life, given the wrong stimuli.

I bought my Kindle edition for a "Shakespeare Sundae" dessert + reading, and was very pleased with its formatting and readability. The price is right, too.
