Death and the Statesman: The Culture and Psychology of U.S. Leaders During War, by Joseph B. Underhill-Cady

Death and the Statesman argues that the fear of death powerfully shapes our thinking about war. Drawing on an extensive study of 20th century US foreign policy officials, Underhill-Cady argues that through the use of symbolism, metaphor, and ritual, foreign policy leaders construe war as a battle against death itself. He provides a fresh and provocative perspective on the underlying cultural and psychological dynamics that make it possible for nations to go to war.

From Library Journal
According to Underhill-Cady (political science, Augsburg Coll.), presidents, State Department officials, and other leaders who send young men to war and possible death cope with the consequences by creating "immortality projects," which are devices that symbolically overcome death. Examples of such projects include identifying war as a means of strengthening the national character, dehumanizing enemies until they are viewed as wild animals or diseases to be eradicated, and attempts by the leaders themselves to establish historical reputations that transcend battlefield deaths. Although this book was written before the September 11 terrorist attacks, Underhill-Cady explains the important role of the state in protecting its citizens and, through examples of speeches made by presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and George Bush p re, shows that words and symbols must be used cautiously so that the decision to go to war is made rationally and unemotionally. This normative investigation is grounded in psychology and cultural anthropology rather than empirical political science. Recommended primarily for academic collections and foreign policy specialists; a more accessible account about the meaning of death generally is Studs Terkel's Will the Circle Be Unbroken? (LJ 9/1/01). Karl Helicher, Upper Merion Twp. Lib., King of Prussia, PA

Review
“Underhill-Cady calls for a new "realism" to replace the technological hubris that has dominated American political and military thinking during the past century. His voice needs to be heard, and his book should be read by anyone concerned with war and peace, life and death, in the new millennium.” —Charles P. Webel, University of California, Berkeley and Saybrook Graduate School

“Underhill-Cady shows that strategic decisions arise less from concerns about national costs and benefits than from personal concerns about the decision-makers own bodies. They transfer their own cravings for immortality into the icy-cold, steel-girded, rock hard, healthy minded "male" American body politic. American foreign policy, with its "evil empires," "crusades," and "crucifixions" on the "alter of the nation," becomes a bowdlerized Pilgrim's Progress. Read and be alarmed.” —James Aho, Idaho State University

The Ten Things You Can't Say in America, by Larry Elder

From Rush Limbaugh to Howard Stern, America tunes in to its radio hosts both on the air and between covers, accepting them as truth-tellers without agendas, the perfect gadflies for the age of too much information. In an era where everyone seems bought and paid for, they cut through it all to tell it like it is. For Fall 2000--just in time to enter the fray for the presidential election season-St. Martin's is happy to present the most unfettered voice of all, Larry Elder.

Larry Elder has been igniting passions and conversations for five years at the top of the competitive drive-time radio heap, KABC in Los Angeles-the "Sage from South Central" punctures pretensions, refuses to accept the accepted wisdom, and puts everyone on notice that the status quo needs to be shaken up. From his outrage over the entrenched "victicrat" society and how it keeps believers spinning their wheels, to his trenchant observations on work, leadership, race, special interests, politics and more, Larry is a clarion voice that cuts through what the usual suspects say and hear.

"Bad schools, crime, drugs, high taxes, the social security mess, racism, the health care crisis, unemployment, welfare state dependency, illegitimacy. What do these issues have in common? Politicians, the media and our so-called leaders lie to us about them. They lie about the cause. They lie about the effect. They lie about the solutions." -- Larry Elder

Amazon.com Review
When Larry Elder talks, sparks fly, and he likes it that way. Fans of the radio talk-show host from Los Angeles, who call themselves Elderados, have dubbed him "the sage from South Central." His critics--and there are many--use names that range from Oreo to the Antichrist. What's it all about? Elder, a libertarian, lays down his controversial views in his first book, which attacks the politically correct, black leaders, feminists, gun-control advocates, and other "so-called liberals." Some of the 10 things you can't say in America include "Blacks are more racist than whites," "There's only a dime's worth of difference between Republicans and Democrats," "The media bias is real, widespread and destructive," and "America's greatest problem is illegitimacy." Elder aims to change the way blacks look at their future, demanding that they take responsibility for their lives, stop blaming all their problems on racism, and pay attention to the progress they've made. While there may be some truth in what he says and even some good news (for instance, the self-esteem of black children is equal to or better than that of whites), this isn't exactly a pep talk. Not surprisingly, his all-out attack on black leaders (whom he calls nutcases and hysterical) and white liberals has engendered a fair amount of hostility. With this kind of dialogue, it's hard to believe Elder's going to win too many converts. But for those who appreciate his views, or are curious about them, this book is a provocative and lively ride into the mind of one of the nation's most outspoken black libertarians. --Lesley Reed

From Publishers Weekly
Los Angeles radio talk-show host and nationally syndicated columnist Elder, who is African-American, has incurred the wrath of many blacks for his outspoken assertion that racism in the U.S. no longer represents a serious threat to blacks' upward mobility. This conversational, bluntly candid manifesto should prove equally controversial. Elder, who favors much less government and much less regulation, blames both Republicans and Democrats for creating and maintaining a bloated welfare state that stifles individual initiative and free enterprise. His "Ten-Point Plan" for transforming America calls for abolishing the IRS; passing a national sales tax; reducing government by 80%; ending welfare and entitlements, including Social Security, Medicare, and farm and tobacco subsidies; legalizing drugs; abolishing the minimum wage (which, he claims, undermines job creation for blacks, teenagers and entry-level workers); and eliminating corporate taxes. He also opposes affirmative action, hate-crime legislation and virtually any regulation of handguns, including registration. Elder (who is slated to host the forthcoming TV show The Moral Court) further accuses the white-run media of condescending to blacks by overemphasizing stories of racism and by subtly applying a lower set of expectations to African-Americans' behavior. Taking swipes at Bill and Hillary Clinton, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Johnnie Cochran, Louis Farrakhan and others, he blasts the black leadership, which, he insists, should focus on ways to morally and legally discourage "the young, irresponsible and unwed from having children." In Elder's apt phrase, we have become a nation of "victicrats," people blaming their ills on others and demanding special treatment while refusing to accept personal responsibility. While many readers will consider his prescriptions simplistic, they'll find his candor and straight talk refreshing.

Mr. Elder Speaks Up
By Jennifer Sopranzi
Larry Elder says the 10 Things You Can't Say in America, and says them well. But I gave the book only three stars because I have heard all 10 things before. Many people have said them before, even though it takes courage to say them out loud. What I would like to hear are some meaningful, workable solutions.

Like many Conservatives and and Libertarians, Mr. Elder is very good at identifying the problems and their root causes, but not so good at identifying real solutions. The Social Security system may be broken, but I don't think that we will ever drop the system. So the question is how do we fix it? The same is true with many of the other problems described in the book.

Perhaps the best sections of the book are those that deal with the "vicitcrat" mentality that has developed in America over the last few decades. Today, it seems that you are disfunctional, or delusional if you are not the hopeless, helpless victim of an evil oppressor. Responsible, high-functioning individuals are just not "normal," or they are one of the oppressors. Overcoming your problems is not fashionable. Elder does an excellent job of explaining how destructive this victim-thinking is. Giving people an excuse to fail is never a good idea. Paying them to fail (through welfare, etc) is even worse.

I recommend this book because it is a well written description of some of the most serious problems in America today. I just wish it helped me to know how to fix it all.

The Prophet Motive
By John Van Wagner
Like Moses descending the mountaintop with the Ten Commandments, Larry Elder, in this libertarian manifesto, seeks to lead his people out of the slavery of entitlement into the promised land of opportunity. Elder's ten taboos of political correctness translate into a latter day gospel of individual morality filtering down to one golden rule: thou shalt take responsibility for thyself.
The book takes on all comers: welfare cheats, criminals, teenage mothers, youth gangs, the AFL-CIO, Medicare, the liberally biased media, and the two party system. It is the "victicrats", those well-meaning operatives of the American left, who occupy the lowest rung in Elder's pantheon of oppressors. From Hillary Clinton to Ted Kennedy, Alton Maddox to Maxine Waters, Elder deconstructs motive and policy to reveal how society's most prominent "leaders" conspire, accidentally or not, in holding citizenry down in a mire of self pity and entitlement.
The book starts out with an indictment of black "leadership" and attitudes, and the first chapters are a clarion call for self-respect and personal responsibility. Elder topples a lot of totems in the first pages, but much old ground is trodden when he examines the pernicious effects of AFDC on the black (don't tell Elder to use "African-American") family. The revelations of the moral bankruptcy of Al Sharpton aren't exactly a transformative experience, either.
Later, when he delves into a more wide ranging discussion of Libertarianism and its implications, things really get interesting. He offers a trenchant examination of the US health care system, the most understandable that this reader has ever encountered. The chapter on the war on drugs could convert Nancy Reagan to the cause. Gun control advocates have never had such an effective foe.
The greatest weaknesses in the book come when Elder is at his most self-serving. He gives a weak argument for why he benefited from affirmative action while he would deny it to others. His indictment of the media includes such specious claims as the one that "they know nothing about the laws of economics." Since he's now a prominent member of the media, he would do well to back up such statements with at least some evidence.
In the vast majority of the book, Elder uses statistics and anecdotal evidence to devasting effect. If for this reason only, he needs to apply this technique more evenly throughout this interesting work. Even with such weaknesses, Larry Elder has shown us the way on a journey to a greater humanity, and for that he deserves our rapt attention.

An excellent commentary on American life and times...
By A Customer
This should be required reading for everyone in junior high all the way to the elderly! This guy is so on target, so logical and just so darn smart in a commom sense way it gets you all fired up. I actually had to read only a chapter every few days because there was so much to ponder, or to get infuriated over! Whether you agree with his views or not, you will respect the way he offers facts and shows the reality of situations. Sometimes I was laughing out loud, sometimes I would yell at my husband over all of the crazy, stupid things that go on in this country. My poor husband would tell me to calm down, he wasn't the one participating in the outrageous things going on, but I couldn't help myself. I would read some things out loud to him and get so riled up that I would stomp around, infuriated at the ridiculous things that our government gets away with. I highly recommend this book, it is as entertaining as it is informing and riveting.

what a waste of money and time

what a waste of money and time. One can find more online and more accurate. Small font and typeface, didn't include key sites from the beginning of the route - I LIVE in IL at the beginning of route 66. This book lacked a lot of specifics that would make the trip more enjoyable.

A must have for an old fashioned road trip
By Amazon Customer
Despite having the magic Google machine in the palms of our hands at all times, this book was amazing during out 1937 style trip down Route 66. We learned a ton and were provided with awesome sites to see; each with a little background info to add to the mystique of the journey.

Useful and fun
By Konrad Baumeister
Snyder's Route 66 guide is broken down into two sections; the first is essentially a town by town guide through the from Chicago to Santa Monica pier, and the second is a collection of stories, history, and perhaps a couple of tall tales of the Mother Road and the people along it. There is also a bit of introductory information on planning for the road trip, estimating times, what to take along, and this would be helpful for the first-time roadie.

The directions, as far as they go, are accurate, and the maps (all from the Auto Club of Southern California) are serviceable but small. Snyder's narration of the drive is easy to read, he points out various attractions and areas of interest along the way, and the route is easy to follow. This doesn't mean you won't need any other maps; every roadie would benefit from Bob Moore's set of maps and directions.

Also, Snyder presents the route in its east-west direction only; someone following the route from west to east can do so, but other books will serve far better.

Snyder's Roadside Companion of stories from the road are interesting and well worth reading in your motel before going to sleep before another day on the road.

The ardent roadie will find both information and a lot of love for the Road in Snyder's book, and it is highly recommended.

From Booklist
Pluymen, once named one of the best lawyers in America, turns his attention from the law to write a thoroughly engaging, yet thought-provoking book on alcoholism. He is careful to point out that alcoholism is not just a disease of the down and out, but of the rich and famous and everyone in-between. Although his approach contains a good touch of humor, he remains fully cognizant of the seriousness of his subject. He mixes both facts on alcoholism and stories of alcoholics from different walks of life and at various stages of recovery. A particularly valuable chapter is "Wake-up Call for Women." Here he warns that not only are women at increased risk because of their drinking, but they suffer much more for drinking far less than men. For them, alcohol can become lethal after just two drinks. This is scary stuff, but through both the stories and his own tips, Pluymen shows those in the grip of this deadly disease a clear and effective way out. Marlene Chamberlain

Bert's guide to being a rich drunk
By Mike B.
I was looking forward to getting this book because, like Bert Pluyman, I'm a recovering alcoholic lawyer who lives in Austin! But, I was pretty disappointed.

The first half of the book is basically Bert's autobiography, including entries from his journal. It's replete with stories about his enormous wealth, his career success, his jet-setting playboy lifestyle, and his sexual conquests. Oh, and did I mention that he was captain of the high school football team, a great rugby and soccer player, and ran 3 miles a day even while drinking? Well, if I didn't mention it, Bert certainly does. Often. Of course, smattered amongst that are notes about how he would get drunk a lot and have bad hangovers.

Once you have choked down all the desciptions of life on the French Riviera and his big house in Westlake Hills, Bert informs us that there are studies out there showing a link between genetics and alcoholism (wow, no kidding!) and that substance abuse can cause heart problems (I had no idea). Mixed in are various platitudes from the Big Book, some attributed, some not. The second half of the book mostly consists of various testimonials from other drunks, a la Big Book, some of which were a little more helpful to those of us that don't own Ferraris. Tony's story in particular was quite moving to me. But, it wasn't worth reading the whole book.

The title implies that this book takes a more secular approach to sobriety. That's not the case, as Bert tells us "hey, you use electricity all the time without understanding it, don't you? You can do the same with God!" Where have I heard that before?

To summarize, this book is self-indulgent hack. I have to share with you a quote appearing as an introduction to Part Two:

"You are about to have the most meaningful relationship you will ever have.

That relationship is with yourself. You are about to discover who you really are."

-- James, a janitor with a fourth-grade education.

We can even learn from the Great Unwashed...

It's a pretty easy read, so even if you buy this you won't waste too much time on it. By the way, for those of you who are actually looking for a thinking person's guide to sobriety, I highly recommend Albert Ellis' "Rational Steps to Quitting Alcohol."

Best current book for high-bottom drunks
By A Customer
Bert Pluymen's The Thinking Person's Guide to Sobriety is the best book I've seen regarding high-bottom alcoholics, those bright and successful people who have not yet qualified to tell lurid war stories and who therefore assume the early luxury of comparing themselves out the doors of many AA meetings. I've been a chemical dependency counselor for twenty-three years, and I still shudder when an attorney or social worker lands on my caseload and tells me everything that isn't wrong with him, little or nothing that is - except the documented complaints that forced him or her into treatment - and looks blank when asked the standard assessment questions that focus on obvious physical, psychological, behavioral, social and spiritual consequences. I believe that Mr. Pluymen has just given us an invaluable resource, and I may be using it for client homework assignments.

Basically an intro to AA, with some testimonials
By Helen Caswell
Because of the title and other factors I was expecting a non-religious approach to alcoholism. But that is not what this book is. It is the story of one guy who didn't think he could possibly be an alcoholic, and how after some ups and downs discovered that he wanted to stop drinking and found great value in AA. He avoids discussing Christianity but a big part of his story is his improved relationship with what he calls God.

In other words, reading this book is a lot like just going to an AA meeting, where people every day tell the same story. As such, the book has value in the same way AA has value. And on those terms it is moderately useful, even including chapters in which some third parties tell their drinking stories, just like in AA. But in terms of rationality, this is no more a "thinking person's" book than any other. If you're looking for a secular book on alcohol recovery, keep looking.

By Sherry
If you are ever stuck in Life from a setback, this book is for you. What makes it special? It's packed full of quotes and thought-provoking stories that will stay in your mind long before you finish the book! My personal self-esteem has gone up, and the way he wrote the book makes you feel like he's talking to you and only you. You feel like you are having a conversation with him in person. My concentration span is very bad but this book was so funny and enlightening that I didn't want to put it down. I take it with me to read on the bus, between my breaks at work and before my classes. What I like best is that he makes you feel like you can do anything. It gives hope and encouragement to help you get over anything you've dealt with in the past or any changes you are dealing with now. This will be a winner with teens, and adults and it's principles can inspire even little kids. I'd recommend this one to anyone who wants to have the courage to change their lives for the better. How long does it take to see results? One minute. Everyone can spare one minute. Remember, when you do something positive for yourself, you are really INVESTING in yourself. This book will certainly be a huge investment to be read and enjoyed again and again.

Joyce and the G-Men: J. Edgar Hoover's Manipulation of Modernism, by C. Culleton

Several years ago on a whim, Culleton requested James Joyce's FBI file. Hoover had Joyce under surveillance as a suspected Communist, and the chain of cross-references that Culleton followed from Joyce's file lead her to obscenity trials and, less obviously, to a plot to assassinate Irish labour leader James Larkin. Hoover devoted a great deal of energy to keeping watch on intellectuals and considered literature to be dangerous on a number of levels. Joyce and the G-Men explores how these linkages are indicative of the culture of the FBI under Hoover, and the resurgence of American anti-intellectualism.

Review

"J. Edgar Hoover could hardly tell a Joyce from a James or an ism from a wasm, and his most regular reading was the Racing Form. Yet Claire Culleton's important and engrossing book leaves no doubt that Hoover and his Loyalty Watchers went to extreme lengths to influence what Americans did - and didn't - read. Buy this book now, before today's little Hoovers ban it." - Fred Jerome, author of The Einstein File: J. Edgar Hoover's Secret War Against the World's Most Famous Scientist

"Leading us through her own struggles with the censored FBI files J. Edgar Hoover maintained on many of the leading novelists, poets, and publishers of the period, Claire Culleton uncovers a startling history of official anxiety, unofficial surveillance, and covert repression. Reading provocatively between the lines of blacked-out text in Hoover's files, this book pieces together the compelling portrait of a modernism that might have been: one less pointedly snobbish, more politically engaged, and more directly accessible than the disengaged, highbrow movement we have inherited." - Sean Latham, Assistant Professor of English, University of Tulsa, and Editor, James Joyce Quarterly

"For decades, the ruthless and paranoid J. Edgar Hoover used his position as Director of the FBI to defame, intimidate, and undermine writers who challenged the status quo. In Joyce and the G-Men Claire Culleton explores the tactics Hoover and others used to wage war on freedom of expression in the United States and assesses the chilling effect of Hoover's campaign on modern literature. This is an important contribution to literary history and a timely reminder that the abuse of power thrives on secrecy." - Patrick A. McCarthy, Professor of English, University of Miami

"This artful and indignant book shows J. Edgar Hoover's astonishing efforts to micromanage intellectual life in the United States, and will be invaluable in helping us to understand the nightmare of organized political intolerance in our society." - Staughton Lynd, historian and lawyer. His most recent book is Lucasville: The Untold Story of a Prison Uprising.

Fascinating but Disturbing!
By Karet
Claire Culleton has done some really interesting research about the ways writers were harrassed by Hoover and the FBI. Anyone who believes that the FBI was and is a benevolent, helpful organization should read this book; the reviewer who thinks Culleton is unpatriotic clearly has not read it. It's shocking that there was a file on James Joyce -- who never even came to America! And it's horrifying that so many writers feared writing poltically radical work because they (rightly) thought that they were being watched.

A Stunning Read
By Gerty McDowell
Culleton's book is marvelously written and evokes the horrifying power of government agencies overrun with madness and the quest for power. If you like Joyce, Modernism, the history of small publishing ventures in the early 20th century, or even labor history /feminism, this is your book. A great read, and forgive the cliche, but I couldn't put it down. Even the acknowledgments are well-written and entertaining. Note especially her venture towards encountering the Bureau at 26 Federal Plaza with her lovely assistant, Rocco, in tow. The Larkin info on US labor history and Hoover's desire to have him locked up makes this reader proud to be a union member. Though Culleton has clearly done her research, her style is accessible and engaging. My last recommendation, put in a FOIA request for your own file...

Solid Scholarship
By big mike
Watch out for those who try to derail good scholarship--Culleton's book is worth a look. From the beginning, you can tell the author is invested in the truth, as you are, and digs to find it. I found this an exceptional read on all levels, and I'm in the field, but I also found it easily approachable and very inviting. It's really an interesting read, and it's thought provoking (if you care about this kind of matter, that is). But, if you don't care about the future of art, then buy a cake at Lipton's or a nice plant, and put it in the middle of the table . . .

Female Playwrights and Eighteenth-Century Comedy: Negotiating Marriage on the London Stage, by M. Anderson

Aphra Behn, Susannah Centlivre, Hannah Cowley, and Elizabeth Inchbald were the only four female playwrights in England with multiple comic successes from 1670-1800. Behn's interest in the body, Centlivre's fascination with written contracts, Cowley's nationalism, and Inchbald's discussion of divorce emerge in the comic events that are animated by the psychological mechanisms of humor. Attending to the dialogue between these comic events and the plays' more predictable comic endings illuminates the philosophical, political, and legal arguments about women and marriage that fascinated both female playwrights and the theatergoing public.

Amazon.com Review
Peter Bogdanovich is an original in the movie biz--an artist with a scholar's soul. Or is that vice versa? The director of The Last Picture Show has written several books--learned and loving books--about film, and this collection of 26 energetic, visceral, and witty essays on movies past and present reveals his connoisseurship of other people's prose too. Among the writers, some have marquee value (Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg), two are slumming novelists (Gore Vidal, E.L. Doctorow), and then there are the usual suspects: Roger Ebert, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Andrew Sarris, Robin Wood, Molly Haskell--tenacious, long-time hunchers in the dark and students of the movies. Here, all take longer views, mostly of the past, in pieces originally written for film maven journals like Film Comment and Cineaste, or for magazines like The New Yorker that regularly spill ink on what one writer here describes as "caressing the details" of movies.

Some choices are inspired. Scorsese recalls the cathedral in Little Italy with a Don DeLillo-ish pleasure in spectacle. David Denby rants acutely against the marketing juggernauts that have muted critics so utterly in recent years. Bruce Wagner interweaves stories of the silent film star Billie Dove in a tale with a gauzy kick. And there are surprises too. Remember Rex Reed? The acid-tongued smoothie who used to coax comments you wouldn't believe from big stars (and then print them) delivers a grieving valentine to Kay Thompson, creator of Eloise. And Terrence Rafferty, usually a bit of a heavy-breather, steps up to the plate with a winsome deconstruction of feminine beauty in current and bygone cinema. All in all, a must-have for lovers of conversation about film. --Lyall Bush

From Publishers Weekly
E.L. Doctorow suggests in this fine volume that "film de-literates thought." If that's true, then this collection goes a long way toward "re-literating" us. Bogdanovich has succeeded in bringing together an astonishingly wide array of page-turning articles about the movies, ranging from the analytical to the exultant, on subjects both historical and contemporaryAa breadth that sometimes comes across as a hodgepodge, as there's little explanation of how these essays work in relation to one another. But this liability takes nothing from the writing. There are appreciations and retrospectives, analyses of contemporary films (such as David Denby's essay tackling L.A. Confidential and the '90s film audience) and extensive readings of classics (including a wonderful critique of The Searchers by Geoffrey O'Brien). Some essays are more broadly theoretical, analyzing, for instance, the meanings of star power, directorial styles and the relationship between film and other arts. Some venture into the elegiac, including Rex Reed's tribute to actress, author and fashion voice extraordinaire Kay Thompson and Bruce Wagner's wistful musings on silent-screen legend Billie Dove. In these essays, as with many of the most effective here, the authors find ways to weave deeply personal narratives into far-reaching analyses, demonstrating the cinema's role at the cultural and emotional center of the American century. There are some regrettable gaps: despite one or two essays on race and gender, Bogdanovich has shied away from political readings of film, and there is a strangely disproportionate amount of testosterone, both in terms of subject matter and authors (22 out of 26 are men). Given the many excellent female voices excluded, and the recent strides made by women in the film industry, that's a glaring flaw in this otherwise fine book.

From Kirkus Reviews
The second annual volume in this series is an outstanding collection of essays that takes both movies and writing seriously. Compiled from an assortment of mass market magazines and specialty film journals, the essays range widely over a spectrum of film topics. The best are the personal pieces, such as Gore Vidal's on firing Frank Capra from directing The Best Man and William Zinssers about being an extra in Woody Allen's Stardust Memories. Only a few of the pieces concentrate on modern film topics, such as Mia Mask's take on Eve's Bayou and African-American film, and Chris Chang's essay on the cruelty of Todd Solondz's work. The rest of the essays, all 22 of them, share a deep dissatisfaction with today's movies and a corollary nostalgia for movies past. The view comes from established critics Andrew Sarris, Molly Haskell, David Denby, Roger Ebert, Jonathan Rosenbaum, and Terrence Rafferty and it comes from filmmakers Martin Scorsese, James Mangold, and Steven Spielberg. Editor Bogdanovich sets the tone in his introduction, which harks back to a day when writing about movies could actually change the way movies were made for the better. The side jibe is that most writing about movies today is as worthless as the films that are produced. Bogdanovich says it's all about money now and not at all about art. That is why he selected serious essays and none of the actor profiles or quickie question-and-answer sessions that fill the newsstands. While so much protest can border on whiningand what a common whine it is to complain that things aren't as good as they used to bethis volume is much more a celebration of the good stuff than a rant on what has been lost since the 1970s. With confident writing, opinions infused with knowledge, and expressions of sheer ecstasy about the movie-going experience, this volume is a joy to read. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. Eclectic Collection of Accessible Writing
By A Customer
This book featured a broad range of styles and subject matter, written by the icons of film and literature. Essays by Stephen Spielberg, Martin Scorcese, Gore Vidal, and E.L. Doctorow fill this volume with breadth and depth often lacking outside the halls of Cineaste. The collection also features a review of Eve's Bayou from Cineaste by a writer named Mia Mask, a scintillating piece yet clearly rooted in the academy. I am sure we will hear more from this writer in the future. I view films differently after the perspectives gained from this accessible text.
