Dirty Little Secrets of the Vietnam War: Military Information You're Not Supposed to Know, by James F. Dunnigan, Albert A. Nofi

Dirty Little Secrets of the Vietnam War allows us to see what really happened to American forces in Southeast Asia, separating popular myth from explosive reality in a clear, concise manner. Containing more than two hundred examinations of different aspects of the war, the book questions why the American military ignored the lessons taught by previous encounters with insurgency forces; probes the use of group think and mind control by the North Vietnamese; and explores the role technology played in shaping the way the war was fought. Of course, the book also reveals the "dirty little secrets," the truth behind such aspects of the conflict as the rise of the Montagnard mercenaries-the most feared group of soldiers participating in the secret war in Laos-and the details of the hidden struggle for the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

With its unique and perceptive examination of the conflict, Dirty Little Secrets of the Vietnam War offers a critical addition to the library of Vietnam War history.

From Kirkus Reviews
Precious few secrets are revealed in this densely scattershot look at multiple aspects of the Vietnam War. Perhaps a better title for this wide-ranging book might be An Enormous Number of Vietnam War Facts and Figures Covering Many Different Aspec ts of the War, Some of Which Are Not Widely Known, and Many of Which Are Readily Available in Dozens of Books. Among the few facts that conceivably fit the title's sensational promise are that 30 percent of the Americans who died in the war were Roman Cat holics; that ``underage boys'' enlisted in the US military to fight in the war; that some renegade Japanese troops and Nazi Germans fought briefly with the Viet Minh against the French in the years following WWII; and that the communist side suffered from desertion and draft-dodging. Almost none of the other myriad facts on dozens of subjects, marshaled by the prolific military historians Dunnigan and Nofi (Victory at Sea: World War II in the Pacific, 1995, etc.), are bona fide secrets. The information gi ven is either merely not widely known, fairly well known, or very well known to nearly anyone. In the latter category belong sundry authorial proclamations: that during the war ``territory was commonly taken, lost, and retaken repeatedly, a particularly d isheartening experience for the troops who got shot up doing it''; that there ``was no hero's welcome for the returning [American] soldiers''; and that ``Americans held prisoner by the enemy had a rough time.'' Aside from such banalities, the authors incl ude a blizzard of statistical information on military hardware and personnel matters, much of it interesting and much of it seemingly accurate, although Dunnigan and Nofi provide only a minimal amount of supporting documentation. A decent enough look at many pertinent aspects of the Vietnam War that cant live up to its hyperbolic title. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

If we only knew at the time.

After reading the book, the war seems no more worthy than it did at the time. I have a lot more insight into the bizarre thought process of the people who led us there. I now know there was a lot more hardware available than was ever issued to the boots on the ground.

A entertianing, fact-filled overview of the Vietnam War
By C. Ryan
The title of this 375-page book about the Vietnam War is not accurate. There really aren't too many so-called dirty little secrets revealed and most of the material is not controversial, but the book does have a lot of interesting perspectives and factual data re the war. Eschewing the chronological approach Dunnigan and Nofi write a lot of short interesting chapters on everything from a sketch of the pre-U.S. involvement history of conflict in Vietnam and adjoining nations (which still continues as the growing ethnic Vietnamese population continues suppressing and displacing minority groups) to summaries of each aspect of combat (Army, USMC, helicopters, air war, Naval campaigns (perhaps the weakest section), etc.), descriptions of major actions and incidents and overviews of in-country "cultural" issues (drugs, racial relations, popular music, etc.).

One hallmark is lots of statistics on various topics (casualties, military demographics, air craft, weapons used, etc.). Most of these are from official sources and source references - increasing lacking in much today's politicized nonfiction - are provided. Some of the statistics are explained and provide illustrative insights but unfortunately some of the intriguing data are not well explained.

For instance, there's a general impression that surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) were the overwhelming danger to U.S. aircraft and air-to-air combat was a significant aspect of the war. But the authors present statistics which show that only 11% of aircraft lost in combat were lost to SAMs, 4% were lost in air-to-air combat while the remaining 76% were lost to anti-aircraft artillery and various conventional ground-based weapons fire. However, the authors don't clarify that many, if not most, of aircraft losses occurred over South Vietnam where SAMs and MIGs were not available to our adversaries. The 25% rate of US Navy loss to SAMs and MIGs compared with only 12% for USAF/USMC presumably reflects that the Navy operated relatively more over North Vietnam itself from Tonkin Gulf-based carriers while the USAF/USMC operated a larger percentage pf their fixed wing aircraft over the South.

Another fascinating tidbit are the statistics about deserters who accepted amnesty in the mid-1970s - many of whom had gone to Canada - showing they were disproportionately (86%) in the lowest two classifications out of four military intelligence test classifications.

A suggested reading list, multi-page glossary and extensive indexing give what is basically an entertaining read for military history buffs who are not expert on Vietnam a bit of extra value as a reference for further study.

Recommended for Vietnam War, Cold War and general military history buffs and is an excellent book about the Vietnam-era for people not even born before the war ended.

Reviewed on the 30th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. On April 29, 1975, Radio Saigon began playing Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" (an interesting fact NOT mentioned in this book) as a signal to begin Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of all American personnel from South Vietnam.

Good Choice for Beginners
By Kerry B.
"Dirty Little Secrets of the Vietnam War" is an overview of United States involvement, with a unique format that relies heavily on statistics to make a point. The prose is easy to read, and without hesitation, I recommend this as an excellent starter for students. They will find eye-opening truth about the trappings of foreign policy and military intervention that were ignored by subsequent political and military leaders.

The authors managed to compile fourteen chapters of useful data in a relatively small space. It is packed with a broad spectrum of subtopics (too many to list) including high-level government strategy and policy; public debate and the peace movement; Vietnamese culture; French colonialism; tropical weather and diseases; attacks by large insects, snakes, tigers and elephants that seemed to be in the employ of the enemy; and the merits of weapons and tactics used by the troops and aviators.

The title is misleading, but then again, a great deal of the material is not well known to the public. To a high school or college student who knows nothing about Vietnam, most of the information in this book is a secret to them. If further investigation is on their docket, they cannot go wrong with the select bibliography. It is well chosen.

A general history rarely pleases everyone, so I was not surprised to find a few negative reviews. Most of the objections were not convincing. Space limitations and the editing process dictates that certain aspects of the subject will get more coverage than others. The authors' style of brief, compartmentalized summaries is not directed at experienced researchers, folks with specialized pockets of knowledge who want to quibble about details, or enthusiasts who are deeply immersed in Vietnam history.

There is a drawback in the technical quality of presentation. The authors did not use footnotes or endnotes to identify sources. They did not write using a strict timeline or chronological order, and that makes it difficult to consider certain facts and opinions in the proper context. While not a pinnacle of scholarship, the depth of research is satisfactory for a panoramic study. Most people will either dodge or embrace the barrage of statistical tables, but the text is clearly written and very entertaining. That makes it more attractive and less intimidating to casual readers.

THIS GUIDE'S FOR YOU
By Kent Braithwaite
When I signed the publication contract for my first mystery novel, I suspected I may have some promotional journeys in store for me. I figured I'd be expected to travel to New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver, San Francisco, and other places I knew fairly well. I never realized I'd also be appearing in Anchorage, Plano, Modesto, Yuma, Palm Springs, and countless other terrific towns across the United States promoting my novel. Since my book's publication, I've been doing all sorts of traveling, and this guide to watering holes has been a wonderful addition to my baggage. If you plan on being in an unfamiliar place, refer to this book. If you want to set up business meetings in territories you don't know well, use this book. If you want to find a pleasant dive in which to spend an evening, check out this book. THE BEER LOVER'S GUIDE TO THE USA is the modern author's most indispensable companion. Buy it! Read it! Take care of this book, and this book will take care of you!

If you like beer and you like traveling... this is a very unique resource!!!!!!
By smile3x4me
The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that this book hasn't been updated. Fortunately it provides phone numbers for each spot so just make sure you CALL FIRST especially if you're going out of your way to find one of these gems. I used it for the better part of every summer from 2001-2007 and it was just absolutely invaluable but there were definitely a few places that weren't there anymore.

The book has a very strict rating system so even to get in there said something about the establishment and then there is the 4 star ratings. It is set up extremely user friendly in the sense that it is organized by state and then by major cities and then even by smaller towns. It gives you an idea of atmosphere, food options, pricing. Usually where there is good beer there are good people and good people are always a welcome addition to any roadtrip. This book should be stored right next to your atlas/map/navigational system!

Safe travels & happy drinking!!!!

Beyond Dracula: Bram Stoker's Fiction and its Cultural Context, by W. Hughes

Beyond Dracula represents an important critical departure from the customary psychoanalytical approach to the writings of Bram Stoker. Reading Stoker as a participant in Victorian and Edwardian cultural life, the volume examines the breadth of Stoker's novel-length fiction, as well as his journalism, biographical writings and short fiction. In its considerations of questions of religion, censorship, gender and medicine, the volume will interest not merely readers of the Gothic but those involved in the study of Victorian and Edwardian culture.

Elvis Presley: A Life in Music--The Complete Recording Sessions, by Ernst Jorgensen, Peter Guralnick

For the first time, the complete story of Elvis Presley's recording career is told in this remarkable book. With exclusive access to the RCA vaults, producer Ernst Jorgensen brings to intimate life every moment that Elvis spent in the studio--from the spontaneous joy of his early sessions to the intensely creative periods of his later career. At once the definitive recording session guide and a compellingly readable narrative, this is the ultimate companion to the singer and his songs.

From Publishers Weekly
As director of RCA's Elvis catalogue, Jorgensen is one of the key figures behind the Elvis Presley CD box sets RCA has issued in recent years. This book makes a worthy companion to those historic releases. All of the King's known recordings?including rehearsals, live recordings and recordings made in the privacy of his hotel rooms?are approached with the same reverence that his studio sessions inspire, providing a framework for a narrative of Elvis's life. Indeed, eminent Presley biographer Guralnik (Last Train to Memphis) writes that, given Jorgensen's attention to detail, the author is "either a madman or a great detective." While so many Presley books are written by authors who never seem to overcome their poetic sense of awe regarding the King, Jorgensen, being an RCA executive, couches the story of Presley's life in the gritty details of the artist's work and gets past the myths, giving readers a glimpse of what it might have been like to be Elvis. Hence, his is a truly insightful book. 150 photos in color and b&w. Editor, Calvert D. Morgan.

5 for Content; 1 for Poor book production
By A Customer
This is a must have book for any Elvis fan. Unfortunately, the paperback version is a poor cousin of the original hardback. First, the paperback was produced from the same proofs as the hardback, but on smaller stock. As a result many pictures - and a few captions - have been cropped; this is quite irritating. In addition, the binding is awful. After only a few weeks perusing it, the pages in my copy began to fall out. The publishers should not have allowed this to happen to such a superb reference work.
I hate to harp on the production values, because I do love what Jorgensen has done here, but advise you to order the hardback instead.

Simply the best book about the music of Elvis Presley
By Blue Boy
LAST TRAIN TO MEMPHIS and CARELESS LOVE by Peter Guralnick are the books about Elvis Presley's personal life and they really are the reference concerning the man.

A LIFE IN MUSIC is, for the fans and anybody interested in the music business, the reference concerning Elvis Presley's music.

It's all about his records, Colonel Parker's strategies, his attitude in the recording studio, etc...

There is NO OTHER BOOK as good as this one concerning Elvis's music. Everything is here, year by year: record sales, chart positions, recording sessions dates and locations. And it's only a part of it.

Ernst Joegersen, the author, is the man who resurrected Elvis's catalogue at BMG/RCA (now SONY) from the early 90's until now. He has gathered information concerning all this since 1973 and now he is the main authority about Elvis's music.

If you like Elvis and his music, this book is an amazing source of information.

Music not gossip
By Richard J. Silverberg
This book is for people who really care about the making of Elvis's music. The authors go into detail about the origin of songs and how they were recorded. I particulary enjoyed the musician credits - finding out who played what on the records. Even Elvis played guitar and/or piano on selected numbers. Also, because of this book and and Mr. Jorgensen's previous edition I learned that singers and musicians go through multiple takes to complete a recording. Marvelous writing!

When Did Southern Segregation Begin? (Historians at Work), by John David Smith

When did southern segregation begin? Students often assume that segregation was a natural outcome of Reconstruction. Even scholars cannot agree on which events at the end of the 19th century mark the beginning of American Apartheid. Each of the 6 selections in this volume addresses the question of segregation’s origins, and amid the debate over when segregation began, revelations also emerge as to where and how it became the norm for relations between blacks and whites. Concentrating on the antebellum antecedents of segregation, the surprising fluidity of racial interaction in the postwar South, the relation between segregation and white supremacist doctrine, and the diversity of segregation practices among the states, the selections together demonstrate the evolution of southern segregation from a diverse array of local practices to a rigid, pervasive, legally-sanctioned system of racial apartheid.

Review
'As long as racial inequities persist in the United States, students, scholars and Americans in general will need to know when and why segregation began. John David Smith's astute collection pulls together both classic and recent explanations of the origins of the pernicious practice of restricting rights and public access on the basis of skin color. Beyond tracing the complex origins of segregation, Smith's collection reminds us of the enduring and tragic consequences of legalized racism.' - W. Fitzhugh Brundage, University of Florida

Why Elephants Have Big Ears: Understanding Patterns of Life on Earth, by Chris Lavers

Why Elephants Have Big Ears is the result of one man's lifelong quest to understand why the creatures of the earth appear and act as they do. In a wry manner and personal tone, Chris Lavers explores and solves some of nature's most challenging evolutionary mysteries, such as why birds are small and plentiful, why rivers and lakes are dominated by the few remaining large reptiles, why most of the large land-dwellers are mammals, and many more.

Amazon.com Review
This book might have been titled On the Perfection of Crocodiles. Chris Lavers, a biogeographer at the University of Nottingham, argues that "After 200 million years of hegemonic ecological success, it is time to recognize crocodilians for what they truly are: perhaps the closest approximation to an unsurpassable ecological design in the entire history of tetrapod life." There's a reason, he shows, that "alligators are as tough as old boots": it's not necessarily better to be warm-blooded. "If the warm-blooded condition were inherently superior in the struggle for life, then the world would be crawling with mammal-like and bird-like creatures, whereas in truth it is quite literally crawling with lizards, frogs, snakes, spiders, and beetles." Lavers looks around the animal world and points out that it's full of large warm-blooded creatures and many, many more small cold-blooded ones.

"There is a natural order to tetrapod life on our planet, rooted in the natural ecological talents of different types of animals," Lavers writes. These natural talents come from the fundamental characteristics of different forms and metabolisms: cold-blooded animals like crocodiles can endure starvation far better than warm-blooded creatures, while warm-blooded ones, if properly fueled, can keep going under conditions that stop crocodiles, well, cold. Biologists are used to thinking that energy balances, costs, and benefits are fundamental issues for living creatures, but not of thinking that these issues can be interesting to the general public. Lavers shows that they can be perfectly fascinating: he writes of the peculiarities of elephants, of hot and cold running dinosaurs, of birds on the wing and the ground, with verve and accuracy. This book might be a particularly good choice for dinosaurophiles who are looking to broaden their interests to even larger patterns of life on Earth. --Mary Ellen Curtin

From Publishers Weekly
In this encyclopedic study of the animal kingdom, Lavers demonstrates the truth in his book's epigraph, taken from the German writer (and scientist) Goethe's diary: "How delightful and magnificent a living thing is! How exactly matched to its condition, how true, how intensely being!" Lavers, a lecturer in natural history at the University of Nottingham (England) and contributor to the New Statesman, shows how form is perfectly matched to function in the animal kingdom. After he explains why elephants have stocky legs and long noses and no hair, it gradually becomes clear why they have such large appendages: with relatively little skin surface in proportion to their volume, they have a hard time releasing body heat; the large ears act as ventilators, providing extra surface for the release of excess heat. Dinosaur enthusiasts will enjoy Lavers's take on the cold-blooded vs. warm-blooded debate, in which the claims of warm-blood champion Robert Bakker and his opponents are evaluated on the basis of a detailed understanding of animal anatomy that many other accounts lack. Lavers also explains the importance of layered jungle ecosystems and inland watersheds for large-scale environmental well-being. The book concludes with a frightening but not alarmist warning about the dangers of global warming, which, Lavers shows, probably caused the monumental extinction of almost all life at the end of the Permian period. The writing tends toward the academic from time to time; a little more whimsical conjecture would have added to the book's already considerable appeal. Why wouldn't we ever see a baby elephant fly? Lavers hydroplanes over the underwater world of fish and marine creatures, but perhaps we can expect a future book devoted to it. The drawings of animals here are outstanding. While it will give teenagers a first-rate introduction to natural history, it holds delights for readers of all ages.

From Booklist
Lavers analyzes why animals look the way they do, why they live where they live, and why their physiology is either warm- or cold-blooded. As a child Lavers watched nature programs and wondered about things that the commentators didn't discuss: Why are elephants' ears so big? Why are reptiles small, with the exception of a few really large species that live in water? Why are most birds small? Understanding all of these whys becomes easy under the author's tutelage. He first tackles the fundamental concept of scaling, which explains why large animals are built differently from small animals (and leads to the answer of the book's title question). He then examines the evolution of animal life and the corollary evolution of warm-bloodedness. The patterns of animal life on the planet can be explained by understanding how their size and physiology interconnect, and then by how size and physiology relate to where an animal lives. Nancy Bent

very informative read if you goofed offg in biology class
By Declan Hayes
Elephants can weigh up to 8 tons; their front teeth can be up to 3 meters in length and can weigh over 200 kg. And the African elephant has the largest earflaps of any animal in history. Lavers explains not only why their huge ears are the key to their curious shape but also to why rats are furry and why King Kong could never have climbed the Empire State Building. The elephant's ears, in case you are wondering, act as radiators, an important consideration if you are a lumbering giant baking under the tropical sun.

There is, Lavers's excellent book explains, method to every apparent anomaly in nature. Gazelles, for example, must be built not only to sprint but to dodge and weave as well. This is because cheetahs, which are renowned sprinters themselves, regard them as little more than mobile larders.

Dogs and wolves, on the other hand, are not great sprinters. Instead, they have great stamina and will wear down their prey by sheer perseversence and, well, doggedness. Lavers also explains such interesting things as why swans glide across the water, whereas vultures hop and ostriches cannot fly at all. He also shows how all of these different attributes go to give us the diversity of life on which we all ultimately depend.

This well written book book also explains why the furs of baby harp seals, mink, lynx, snowshoe hares and Arctic foxes are so much in demand but the pelt of a polar bear is not. Lavers also explains how the cubs of polar bears survive the harsh Arctic winter. Although polar cubs are tiny, blind and wet creatures, lacking in fur, fat and the ability to shiver, yet nature has provided the means for them to survive and become the world's biggest bear in some of the world's most inhospitable terrain. That is but one of Mother Nature's daily miracles that Lavers' book unlocks.

The Arizona based spadefoot toad provides another. It spends most of its life encased in cooling mud, emerging only when it rains to have unbridled sexual orgies, massive food binges, and to lay hosts of eggs. Once satiated and once it has ensured the regeneration of its species, it resubmerges itself in the desert's cooling mud.

The Saharan scimitar-horned oryx is a large antelope around two meters in length, which lives beneath the blazing Sahara sun. It never seeks shelter, it drinks very little water and yet it thrives by the judicious use of deep night time breathing, which generates sufficient moisture for it to live on. When the Indonesian based komodo dragon slashes its prey, its filthy fangs cause all kinds of infections, which eventually wear down the unfortunate deer or human it has ambushed. The dragon then saunters after its weakened prey and dines at its leisure.

Although hippos occasionally decapitate them by rolling them around in their mouths, crocodiles have been the undisputed king of the tropical world's freshwater systems for the last 65 million years. Because they are so perfectly adapted to their environment, the only enemy they must really fear is man, the great destroyer. Because we have introduced such ecological vandals as goats, rabbits, cats, rats and mice to fragile ecological systems like Australia and New Zealand, we have done more damage to the environment than anything else since the dinosaurs became extinct.

As well as being replete with fascinating examples such as these, Lavers' book is particularly recommended because its judicious combination of examples such as with an eminently readable style, shows how our own existence is ultimately entwined with the complex life styles of all of those other vreatures, both great and small.

Splendid and readable
By Dennis Littrell
Chris Lavers is a paleontologist who specializes in wildlife ecology. It is from this point of view that he presents some of the ideas and controversies of current evolutionary theory along with some of the excitement of recent discoveries and understandings in a popular and nontechnical manner. His readable text is aimed precisely at the educated nonspecialist, but without a hint of any dumbing down.
In the title chapter we learn that elephants pump the warm blood from the interior of their bodies to the array of tubes in their ears to dissipate excess body heat. From this consideration Lavers is led to a discussion of whether dinosaurs were warm blooded or not. The evidence he presents makes it clear to this observer that they were, but his cautious conclusion is that the case hasn't been proven quite yet. Lavers hints that the dinosaurs may have to be put in another category, perhaps somewhere between warm blooded and cold, or maybe even somewhere beyond. How about: "I'm hot-blooded, check it and see" (to reprise a rock lyric).
Lavers goes to considerable depth to demonstrate how much we can learn by combining evidence from the fossil record with what we know about the metabolism of animals and how their bodies work. Dinosaur anatomy, for example, strongly suggests a closer kinship with today's avian world than with the reptilian. Furthermore, the large size of many dinosaurs is inconsistent with cold-bloodedness. Reptiles can't get as big as a Brontosaurus because (for one thing) they would not be able to regulate their temperature. Lavers points out that all the really big animals on earth today, with the exception of the giant tortoises, Komodo dragons and some snakes--and they aren't really that big--are warm-blooded. He cites the arguments of Robert Bakker and others to conclude that T. Rex, for example, wouldn't have the metabolic power to run down prey if it were cold-blooded.
I found Lavers's discussion of the difference between non-oxygen-based metabolic reactions capable of "supercharged" bursts of short-lived energy typical of reptiles, and the sustainable aerobic reactions typical of mammals like dogs and humans very interesting. The quick bursts are those of the sprinter who is wasted after at most a few hundred yards, while the aerobic engine sustains the pace of the long distance runner. Also interesting is the material in the chapter "Life on the Edge" about how birds and mammals maintain their body temperatures in the climate extremes of the deserts and the polar regions of the earth. Lavers notes that in very cold places there are no reptiles.
In some of this I am reminded of the famous and splendid essay by J. B. S. Haldane, "On Being the Right Size," published many decades ago. Lavers presents the same kind of reasoned argument based on physiology and anatomy to demonstrate why animals are built the way they are and why it would be difficult for them to be constructed otherwise. One comes away from the reading with a sense of having learned something important and exciting, a sense of having acquired understanding, not merely a collection of facts.

interesting and well argued

answers many evolutionary questions and brings up topics you probably hadn't even thought to ask about. incorporates a lot of paleontological evidence and focuses on the evolution of different groups of animals, as well as on specific species. repeatedly refers back to basic laws of physics to explain various adaptations.
readable in general, although sometimes the text is a little awkward and overly detailed and the footnotes could have been better integrated.
here's a complete rundown of the topics covered:
Ch.1: covers issues with the scaling of areas to volumes, how it affects an animal's leg shape, body size, head size, hair, etc.
Ch.2: the energy costs for cold vs. warm-blood, looks more closely at issues w/ body size
Ch.3: looks at theories about the evolution of warm-bloods
Ch.4: looks at theories about whether or not dinosaurs were cold or warm-blooded
Ch.5: adaptations for animals, including in the tundra and desert
Ch.6: why there are hardly any huge cold-bloods, except in unstable, infertile areas like Australia
Ch.7: why there are hardly any large mammals in freshwater regions, although they exist on land and in the ocean. looks at the success of crocodiles.
Ch.8: why there are many species of birds in general and why there aren't many species of large birds
Ch.9: the catastrophic events that happened when there was global warming and decrease of global biodiversity in a previous era

Venice Against the Sea: A City Besieged, by John Keahey

Venice is sinking - six feet over the past 1,000 years.

The reasons for this are many. Although there is a natural geologic tendency for some sinking, humans have exacerbated the problem by exploiting on a massive scale underground water resources for industrial purposes. Coupled with these events - and perhaps most significant - are climatic changes all over the globe. The heating of the atmosphere after the last ice age, dramatically speeded up by humans, has led to a steady, continuing rise in sea level. This global warming is likely to persist beyond human control for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

Venetians, other Italians, and many in the world community are locked in debate over Venice's plight. Venice Against the Sea explains how the city and its 177 canals were built and what has led up to this long-foreseen crisis. It explores the various options currently being considered for "solving" this problem and chronicles the ongoing debate among scientists, engineers, and politicians about the pros and cons of each potential solution.

Through extensive research and interviews, award-winning journalist John Keahey has written the definitive book on this fascinating problem. No matter what the experts decide to do, one thing is for certain - Venice's art, its buildings, and its history are too important to the planet's cultural identity to let it slip beneath the rising waters of the Adriatic.

Amazon.com Review
"Venice is in trouble," writes John Keahey. The city is sinking into the sea. It has lost six feet over the last millennium and soon will lose more. The problem has become so bad that hotel concierges routinely distribute rubber boots to guests, and tourists cross historic squares on elevated boardwalks. Long-time residents flee not only the rising water, but also the rising cost-of- living and the rising industrial pollution. Venice, according to Keahey, "is evolving into a crumbling museum." Once, of course, it was an economic powerhouse with global reach; later it became the repository of some of the finest art and architecture in the world. Now it's sinking, largely due to the remorseless facts of geography, but also because the city's residents have abused their underground water resources. In Venice Against the Sea, Keahey offers a detailed description of what's gone wrong--and explores how the city might be saved, at least temporarily, through innovative engineering. This is a book anybody who has fallen in love with Venice will want to read, yet it issues a stark warning for people in coastal cities all over the world. If sea levels continue to rise, Venice's bleak fate may also be their own. --John Miller

From Publishers Weekly
Built on a lagoon, Venice is now in constant danger of becoming a new Atlantis, explains journalist Keahey (A Sweet and Glorious Land) in this fascinating look at the ecological disaster facing the city of canals. Not only is sea level "sixteen feet higher than it was six thousand years ago when the lagoon was formed," a situation made increasingly worse by global warming, but the foolish extraction of ground water for industrial uses has accelerated the city's sinking. Indeed, a catastrophic flood in 1966 was a clear warning, and in 1996 there were "ninety-nine tides over thirty-one inches," all of which flooded St. Mark's Square. Keahey writes perceptively of Venice's ecology and history its mythic founding by descendants of Trojan warriors, its involvement with the Crusades and the development of medieval trade routes quoting a wide variety of sources from Livy to Jan Morris to scientists at the 1997 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. While the situation looks dire (malfeasance on the part of the Italian government has only made things worse), Keahey investigates several possible solutions, like a potentially promising plan for barrier gates similar to the ones London uses to control the Thames. This informative book examines an urban environmental crisis in the making.

From Booklist
Venice has inspired innumerable authors to praise its cultural treasures; Garry Wills (Venice: Lion City [BKL Jl 01]) continues a line that stretches back to John Ruskin and earlier. But their panegyrics, and the vital tourism industry, will sink if the Venetians can't defend their city against the Adriatic Sea. The problem is hardly a novel one, having existed since the earliest inhabitants found refuge from the disorder of the Dark Ages in tide-washed mudflats. Living on mudflats proved so safe that to preserve the city, Venetians over the centuries have diverted rivers and built dikes to prevent their lagoon from silting up. Thus, the city's environment is largely artificial; ironically enough, environmentalists fulminate, so far successfully, against further artificial measures such as constructing gates and locks. Keahey's informative, readable report is based largely on interviews he conducted in 2000 with the principals--engineers, architecture aficionados, and politicians. The legions of Venice lovers will not want to miss Keahey's reality check on Venice's future. Gilbert Taylor

Very good, gets a little technical towards the end
By A Customer
The first three-quarters+ of the book is excellent. It provides a good overview of Venetian history and explains how/why the city is essentially sinking. The author then gets into a TREMENDOUS amount of depth (no pun intended) concerning funding for a proposed gate project, various changes of Italian government, etc.-- probably more than you need to know, certainly more than I needed. Overall, though, the book was very good, even for someone who knows Venice as well as I do.

One of the most intriguing books I ever read.
Read it and you'll be talking about it, at all dinner parties.
The mysteries of Venice are somewhat revealed, at least what's a foot under the water,
and how to stop the saline deterioration of building structures...

Unspeakable ShaXXXspeares, Revised Edition: Queer Theory and American Kiddie Culture, by NA NA

Unspeakable ShaXXXspeares is a savvy look at the wide range of adaptations, spin-offs, and citations of Shakespeare's plays in 1990s popular culture. What does it say about our culture when Shakespearean references turn up in television episodes of The Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island, films such as In and Out and My Own Private Idaho, and hardcore porn adaptations of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet? Burt reads the reception of these often quite bad replays in relation to contemporary youth culture and the "queering" of Shakespeare.

Unfinished Mourning
By tamiii
I too found this book charming, cogent, concise, and funny. I will therefore not repeat what others have so well said. In reading it, I was reminded of an experience I had while reading another wonderful book, Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky. There, a Jewish writer wrongly takes for granted the enduring power of classical music in the midst of a heinous invasion.

My father, born a poor man, was blessed with a college education as a benefit from serving during World War II. On hearing classical music for the first time in a college dorm, he raced up several flight of stairs, pounded on the door of the room from which the music came, to ask a fellow student what was that magnificent sound? He made sure his children should not be similarly deprived by surrounding us with that treasured music. Yet, like Shakespeare, it is now puzzingly gone, save perhaps among those foreign born or gay.

Here, the author points the blame to a mass culture determinedly aimed at selling to children as that market which, at least at one time, offered the highest profit. I am not entirely convinced of this explanation as both Shakespeare and classical music still survive among a small but delighted audience of mostly amateur players. Yet, it does seem that the mainstream no longer values wisdom or its fountainhead, serenity. That both were venerated after the cataclysm of world war and are now forgotten in an age of immediate gratification does make me wonder if Burt isn't onto something when he calls the result unfinished mourning. In opposition to trendy cultural critics, setting the record straight by carefully examining what was once treasured, an integral task of mourning, may yet turn out to be the most political work.

Not only about Shakespeare porn!
By A Customer
I ran across this book while reading an essay in Lingua Franca about Shakespeare porn. Burt lists a whole series of Shakepseare porns on his personal website and he discusses many of them in a long chapter to his book. From his website, which I found very intriguing, I see that he will be publishing an another article on the same topic. While all this makes for extremely interesting criticism (and college courses to), the book also discusses a wide range of what Burt calls "replays" of Shakespeare in mostly 1990s mass culure. Burt is also the editor of a book I will buy called Shakespeare After Mass Media. Burt documents the many positive academic reviews and the extensive media coverage Unspeakable ShaXXXspeares has received on his website. After reading this excellent book, I can see why it has such a high profile and why Burt's work is getting so much positive attention.

Witty and moving analysis of Shakespeare's fate in media
By Elizabeth Power
One doesn't usually expect to find oneself laughing when reading a book of criticism written by an academic, much less a book on Shakespeare. But Burt's book is frequently just that, funny to the point of making me laugh out loud. Burt has a refreshingly off-beat sense of humor, and the materials he has discovered--such as an adult movie version of Hamlet--aer themselves often hilarious as well, though not always intentionally so. But far from being just a laugh riot, the book is also a serious, critically sophisticated analysis of Shakespeare's fate incontemporary mass media, where much of hte lnagugae is cut or confined to well-known quotations. Burt's final chapter on films about teaching Shakespeare is quite moving, and Burt has the courage to raise difficult questions without pretending he is able to answer them. He is right to think that the questions are more important than the answers. Burt is to be congratulated for writing his book in a clear and engaging prose style without sacrificing the complexity of his thought.
