Privatization, Corporate Governance and the Emergence of Markets (Studies in Economic Transition)From Palgrave Macmillan

The volume focuses on privatisation in transition countries, addressing issues ranging from corporate governance to the relationship between privatisation and the emergence of markets, from a multi-disciplinary perspective. The contributors investigate both the theoretical groundwork of privatisation and enterprise restructuring as well as recent empirical evidence. The contributions show that changes in ownership titles are but one part of the story, being closely interwoven as they are with the transformation of corporate governance, enterprise restructuring, network transformation and the emergence of markets.

He's All Man: Learning Masculinity, Gayness, and Love from American Movies, by Prof. John M. Clum

"He's All Man" is John M. Clum's insightful, biting and characteristically humorous analysis of the central myths of American manhood that have been propagated by Hollywood films and dramatized by our major playwrights. In the politically incorrect way he dared to ask "What happened to gay irony?" in Something for the Boys, Clum now dares to ask the explosive question "What is the vision of the American Male that Hollywood has sold us?" “He's All Man” examines the ways in which homoeroticism has been part of the myth of American manhood, wrapping itself around cowboy, soldier, and gangster legends as they fuse to create a picture of the quintessential American male. From Audie Murphy to The Sands of Iwo Jima and The Maltese Falcon, Clum takes us on a tour of the roughs, the toughs, and the fluffs that swagger, strut, and pirouette their way through the Hollywood Masculinity Machine and the ways in which gay filmmakers have bought into the Hollywood vision of manhood and romance. Just as Something for the Boys raised hackles and caused controversy over Lorenz Hart's lyrics and Ethel Merman's lungs, “He's All Man” will surely do the same for Edward G. Robinson's cigar and Marlon Brando's t-shirt.

From Library Journal
Clum's (drama & English, Duke) latest does for movies what his earlier Something for the Boys did for theater: it gives readers a definitive treatment of how a popular form represents gay men and, more generally, manhood. Although Clum continues to include some references to plays in this work, his main focus remains American film. And unlike other academics, he does not attempt to "queer" the subject, that is, to interpret it from a gay/queer perspective, but rather wants to examine broader social issues that it implicates and to answer the highly provocative question, "What is the vision of the American male that Hollywood has sold us?" In other words, Clum does not just seek to identify gay references in film but also attempts to explore and come to terms with topics such as violence and masculinity, gender equity in portrayals, fathers on-screen, and images of gay men both before and after the advent of liberation movements of the 1960s. Fortunately for general readers, his style is accessible, so most people will be able to enjoy reading this book even if only as a survey. Libraries collecting popular culture or film studies will want to own this title. Some comparable works include Richard Dyer's Now You See It: Studies on Gay and Lesbian Film (1994) and his Culture of Queers (2002). David Azzolina, Univ. of Pennsylvania Libs., Philadelphia

One More Kiss: The Broadway Musical in the 1970s, by Ethan Mordden

Ethan Mordden's new entry in his history of the Broadway musical looks at an era that brought us not only the gritty reality of "A Chorus Line" and the brilliantly bittersweet works of Stephen Sondheim, but also the nostalgic crowd-pleasers "No, No, Nanette" and "Annie." It was a time when Broadway both looked to its past, but also to its future and allowed reality to enter. Mordden writes of the last time we ever saw true greatness on the stage of the Broadway musical.

Alas, the Last Kiss of All
By enubrius
There have been numerous histories of the American Musical and, like that unique art form itself, their quality has varied. Some have been excellent such as Gerald Bordman's "The American Musical", some dreadful (kindness forbids naming names, but you know who you are Mr. Flinn!). And then there is one that is sui generis. Actually, that one is six. Ethan Mordden's six volumes, each covering a decade from the '20 when what we define as American musicals began through the '70's when, as Mr. Mordden mordantly beilieves, it ended. The genius of these works (really only one long work) lies in both its completeness (what other work on the subject would include "Smith", a Don Murray starring fiasco of the early '70's?) and the brilliant evocation of each show in its time and place in American theater and culture. Mordden manages this feat even for shows he couldn't possibly have seen unless he's old enough to make Bob Hope seem a comparative teen-ager. I am not stating anything radical when I say that this is NOT a book to everyone's taste. We can't get people to GO to musicals anymore, let alone READ about them. But for those who care, this is THE one to read.

A thoroughly-detailed, colorful trip through 1970s musicals.
By Matthew Murray
There's plenty to admire in Ethan Mordden's series of books about the art and craft of American musical theatre, and examples of some of the best of it can be found in his most recent volume, One More Kiss: The Broadway Musicals of the 1970s. In discussing some of the biggest hits (A Chorus Line, 1975), biggest flops (1600 Pennsylvania Avenue), and most groundbreaking (Follies, from which he derived the title of the book), Mordden provides a wild ride through a difficult decade in which the very nature of what made a musical--and what about the musical appealed to the theatregoing public--was changing irrevocably. His writing style is opinionated, yes, but also neat, with an incredible number of facts, and plenty of references to his exquisite knowledge of matters both musical and theatrical.
The book, however, reads very quickly, and is almost over before it's begun. While the length of the book cannot rightly be considered Mordden's fault, still greater detail about the decade's shows would have improved the overall flow of the book, as would have more of the social and showbiz atmosphere that made his earlier books (particularly Comin' Up Roses: The Broadway Musicals in the 1950s) such a joy. He also runs out of steam right at the end, when he really needs to wrap things up and not just... stop. As this is his last planned volume (chronologically), to let so much just drop is somewhat irresponsible, and prevents the book from achieving its full dramatic power and usefulness as a reference book.
Still, it's a highly entertaining read, and a must-have for those who have followed Mordden through previous decades in the Broadway musical's Golden Age.

Recommended With Caveats
By Ricky Hunter
Ethan Mordden has added another volume to his valuable series of books covering Broadway musicals, decade-by-decade, from the twenties to the seventies. One More Kiss, the Broadway musical in the 1970s, is the most personal of all the volumes. In many ways, this is one of its strong features as the author has personally seen all of the shows and can give an impression of it beyond what the critics have left. This strength, though, can often be the book's weakness as the author's personal feelings spill over all the pages. His political conservatism often shadows his opinions in ways that tell one more about the author than about the shows he is discussing. Still, it is an interesting book, sometimes fascinating and informative, sometimes shrill and bitchy, but always well-informed and particularly strong in its analysis of the major hits (Chorus Line, Chicago, Annie, etc.) and the Sondheim shows. A fascinating, frustrating addition to this series.

imbalanced but strong
By Yalensian
According to its title, the book compiles documents from 1933-1945, the era of Franklin D. Roosevelt, but the contents are strongly tilted toward the 1933-1941 period. Maybe that's justified, given Polenberg's clear focus on domestic social and political issues and given, of course, that the New Deal period consituted more years than World War II. But I felt more than a little disappointed by the brief treatment the war effort received. And the documents pertaining to the war focused largely on Japanese internment and the issue of bombing the concentration camps. These are both important topics and worthy of attention, particularly the latter which I fear is sometimes overlooked (and which is in many ways a telling issue). FDR's Four Freedoms speech is not included, nor the Atlantic Charter, nor the Pearl Harbor speech. The book would definitely have profited from inclusion of these documents and perhaps also of documents pertaining to strategy or military policy.
Nevertheless, the book has three strong points that make it worthwhile. One, Polenberg includes a wide variety of primary sources: speeches, photographs, Supreme Court decisions, letters, posters, poems, songs, press conferences, etc. The sources also come from a range of people, left and right, "large and small." This makes the book particularly useful as a teaching tool for showing students how to tackle primary documents of all types.
Two, in the book's imbalance lies its strongest element--it covers the Depression and the New Deal thoroughly, offering new perspectives and carving new dimensions. We hear from the Roosevelts, both Franklin and Eleanor. We read the views of writers John Steinbeck and Upton Sinclair, and of Roosevelt opponents Charles Coughlin and Huey Long. Administration officials provide their opinions on New Deal legislation (including the frequently ignored Federal Theatre Project). Dorothea Lange's photographs depict the misery and poverty of the Depression. Mexican-American, African-American, and Native American viewpoints also receive attention. Polenberg successfully draws documents to paint a multi-dimensional, in-depth portrait of the 1930s.
And three, Polenberg concludes with a fine bibliography for further reading on the various topics of spanned by the documents.
All in all, despite the weak coverage of World War II, the book is eminently useful for readers interested in the period and especially for teachers and students. Had Polenberg covered the war years in the same detail as the Depression/New Deal, this would be a thoroughly excellent sourcebook. Nevertheless, it is a worthwhile book and could function quite well in an AP history course, or as a complement to reading, say, David Kennedy's Freedom from Fear.

The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: Manic Depression and the Life of Virginia Woolf, by Peter Dally

Combining his knowledge as a doctor and a lifelong fascination with Virginia Woolf's life and work, eminent psychiatrist Peter Dally offers a haunting and compelling look at the depression that tormented Virginia Woolf throughout her adult years.

On three ocassions Virginia went mad. Symptoms of these episodes included conversations with her dead mother, and hearing birds speak in Greek. Thougha quiet life cushioned her childhood, the renown Woolf achieved through writing inspired the bouts of depression and elation that she regularly experienced as an adult. This terrified Virginia, and though the experience offered extraordinary insight into her craft, Woolf lived in constant fear of her dreadful affliction.

Virginia's most vital protection from stress was her husband, Leonard. Without his constant vigilance and care, it is doubtful she would have been so creatively productive. Yet, paradoxically, their marriage ultimately preciptated her most dangerous bout of madness. Toward the end of her life, when events outside the couple's control led to Leonard's own depression and gradual withdrawal, Virginia found herself facing madness alone, and with tragic results.

Compassionate and disturbing, this fascinating study is the first to look at Virginia Woofl's life from the perspective of her illness.

Analyze this!
By Bruce Oksol
The author is a retired English psychiatrist who became a Virginia Woolf fan after reading "Mrs Dalloway."

For a reader new to Virginia Woolf, this could serve as a pretty good biography of Woolf. It's relatively short, provides a good overview, and would encourage the reader to explore all Virginia Woolf has to offer.

For a Virginia Woolf fan, it fills in the gaps, connecting the dots between Virginia's episodes of insanity and depression with events in her life.

In addition, Dally does an outstanding job analyzing the romantic and sexual relationships among the Bloomsbury bunch.

Dally includes a Stephen family wiring diagram identifying those with mental illness.

(Incidentally, of the dozens of books I have on Woolf, Dally's book is the only one I have that has a photograph of Vanessa that reveals a stunningly beautiful woman. Virginia was considered as beautiful, if not more so, but the photographs of Virginia must not do her justice. She is pretty in her younger years, but even so, Vanessa seems stunningly gorgeous.)

Hell is where this psychiatrist belongs
By Judith Lautner
Interesting title, promising subject. But the book is a huge disappointment. If you are looking for a brief biography of Woolf that touches on her bipolar disorder, then this may be what you want. If you want any real discussion of the disorder and a decent analysis of how she developed it and how it manifested itself, go elsewhere.
Dally is a psychiatrist who came of age in the 1950s. He is particularly interested in "manic depression" and anorexia nervosa, and he found both in Woolf. He used her extensive diaries to divine what troubled her, and his own background to determine why.
Dally has a tendency to trot out theories and present them as facts. From the beginning he describes Woolf's illness as genetic and attributes it to her father's side of the family. His "proof" is a family tree that shows that some members of her father's family suffered from various nervous disorders and he could not find as much evidence of such illness on her mother's side. He offers no proof of the genetic basis but merely proclaims it. In the appendix he notes that the genetic basis has not been proven "but it is only a matter of time".
Yet, in his own description of Virginia's childhood, he offers a much more potent and believable basis for her later depressions. Her mother did not want her, essentially rejected her, and always considered her of less value than the males of the family. There was nothing Virginia could do to win her mother's approval, yet she continued to try. As is typical with those with depression, she could not outright reject her mother or blame her for her own pain, and as a result her anger turned inward. This seems a far more plausible reason for her bipolar disorder than some vague genetic predisposition.
He also provides absolute treatment prescriptions, as if he were prescribing an antibiotic for a bacterial infection. Manic-depressives need quiet. They need to be kept from becoming excited. They need people around who will support them. They need to be protected from stress.
Is this true? Would Virginia have not killed herself if she had never had to face stress, if she were kept in the country, if nobody ever offered her any excitement? Even though she herself craved excitement, social interaction? Would she have truly been better off without the parties, the various stresses of everyday living? I was not at all convinced.
Dally's assumptions don't stop with Virginia and Leonard. He proclaims that Virginia's lover, Vita Sackville-West, was incapable of forming long-term intimate bonds. By what means did he make this diagnosis? He never met the woman. He can't possibly know if she was outright "incapable", and he certainly offers no basis for this assertion.
I found the book offensive for these reasons. He has reduced a writer of amazing creativity to a creature with a genetic disease, and has offered no substance for his simplistic analysis.

Exactly what Woolf would have expected of a doctor
By C. Ash
This is far and away the least insightful, least knowledgeable, least useful book I've ever read about Virginia Woolf. If I ever come across a book by this doctor again, I will shun it like the plague. Here are a few of the many, many ways he went wrong:
1) The "family tree" in the back of the book that supposedly supports his claim that Woolf's mental health issues were genetic is totally incomplete. So far as an informed reader can tell, he only named and "diagnosed" immediate family members of Leslie Stephen and family members who he could identify as having some kind of problem related to Woolf's. Another problem is that he doesn't appear to have presented his evidence for having determined that these people even suffered from the same difficulties one to the other, let alone to Virginia Woolf's manic depression.
2) He constantly undermines the evidence given by women (Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell -- Bell is supposed to have not even known whether or not she had a miscarriage in 1911) while bolstering the evidence given by men. He promotes the causes of George Duckworth and Leslie Stephen, and belittles the evidence that George at least may have committed some serious offenses against his half-sisters. In the spirit of humility and a recognition that he was not there and did not know these people, Dally should at least have indicated that the evidence might be sketchy and presented the evidence for his views as *possible*. His attitude towards women is, at best, outdated. Given that, I don't think he should have undertaken to write about one.
3) Dally "diagnoses" medical conditions of people for whom he has extremely limited information without defining his terms. What is cyclothemia? Well, I could look it up in a book, but what it means to Dally or how he came to his conclusion, I'll never know.
4) Dally uses only published sources for his book. Yes, some of them may have been out of print and quite difficult to find, but that doesn't change the fact that he allowed himself to be limited to published sources. There are a lot of documents (Leonard Woolf's letters, for one) that were not published or were published only in part at the time that Dally's book was written. But many of these resources are readily available at university libraries. How he can presume to diagnose and criticize based on an incomplete record -- well, it's an astonishing act of arrogance, and if he were practicing REAL medicine would probably get him sued.
I could say a lot more about Dally's characterizations of Woolf's motivations, his overlooking the importance of various people in her life, his lack of understanding of the period about which he wrote, his utter lack of sympathy for the values of Bloomsbury -- but I don't have enough space.
Bottom line -- this book is junk and although it could have been a terrific addition to Woolf scholarship, any half-competent graduate student could have produced something really useful and far more insightful than this exercise in medical chauvinism. It's exactly the sort of thing Virginia Woolf would have expected from a doctor.

Amazon.com Review
If you had to summarize Fail-Safe Investing in three words, it would probably be these: Embrace the obvious. Look at your job, Browne advises. You get ahead because of your experience, education, and common sense. Your job is the reason you have money to invest in the first place. So the first of Browne's 17 rules is, "Build Your Wealth upon Your Career." Don't jeopardize your career; it's going to take many years of smart investing before your earnings will surpass what you earn at your day job--if they ever do.

The other rules aren't quite as obvious, but equally simple. Browne explains the difference between investing (making a long-term plan and sticking with it) and speculating (betting that you can beat the overall market during a specific period). He shows how life savings are easily lost when you borrow money to invest rather than investing only the money you already have. Browne also suggests a portfolio that he says is the simplest and safest possible for continual, steady returns above inflation: an equal division among stocks, bonds, gold, and cash. That covers an investor in times of prosperity (stocks), inflation (gold), deflation (bonds), and recession (cash). While many investment analysts would undoubtedly gag if you presented them with a portfolio that consisted of a 50 percent investment in gold and cash, Browne nonetheless makes a compelling argument that such an allocation makes it easier to sleep at night. And common sense tells you there are worse things than a good night's sleep. --Lou Schuler

THE BEST-KEPT SECRET IN THE INVESTING WORLD...
By Scott Lahti
...according to Harry Browne, is the fact that "almost nothing turns out as expected." And yet, unlike in most other areas of their lives, in which they rightly view soothsayers as entertainers devoid of an inside track to the future justifying any go-for-broke departure from the straight and narrow of prudential common sense, somehow in the sphere of investing, perhaps driven by the fear of being "left behind" by the latest opportunities for speculative windfalls (and, need we add, spectacular losses?), millions of otherwise practical people are enchanted by one siren song or another: the claims of self-anointed "insiders" with "perfect" track records (i.e., a few lucky haphazard predictions from yesteryear masking the several dozen by the same advisor which turned sour), or the "scientific" systems of various gurus which start to fail the minute your money is on the line. By contrast, the desires of the great majority of us for the protection and enhancement of that part of our savings we cannot afford to lose as we prepare for retirement and beyond, can be best served by an investment strategy which emphasizes safety and simplicity - and which is diversified across four major investment media - stocks, bonds, gold and cash - so that, no matter what the uncertain future brings to the economy, our portfolios contain investments geared to respond well to each major trend - prosperity, inflation, tight money, or deflation. And with this strategy in place for those assets readers are counting on for their long-term survival, they still may, if they wish, speculate with that portion of their fortunes they know they can afford to lose. Ultimately, Browne's investment advice is a sound application of what, in that intoxicating book of personal philosophy which has helped so many in their quest for freedom and self-understanding, HOW I FOUND FREEDOM IN AN UNFREE WORLD (1973), he calls "The Uncertainty Trap: the urge to act as if your information were totally certain." And in their herd-based quest to sound "professional" and ahead of the competition, too many investment pundits and "experts" present themselves as "in the know" about not just why the market rose or fell today (I'm sure I'm not the only one who enjoys a great horselaugh whenever he hears broadcast reports to the effect that "the market rose today on rumors [or fears, or puffs of smoke] that..."), but what it will do tomorrow - and next year (as the always good-humored Browne points out, anyone with an authentic gift for financial prophecy wouldn't be wasting his time hawking newsletters and trading systems, or playing the talking-heads game on cable - he'd be helping the likes of George Soros and Rupert Murdoch invest a few spare billion, en route to owning his own country). Everything Browne writes merits the closest attention, and in this, his self-proclaimed last book on investing, he here presents a sort of summa of the common-sense wisdom he has garnered from thirty years of watching the rise and fall of markets - and he does so with his customary directness, clarity, and humility. He remains in a class by himself, and many of us will always be in his debt for the uncommon ideas he has expressed so ably. And above all for his own example - for the standard he has set.

Forever changed
By Bill A.
I read a lot of books--but rarely write reviews. This one, however, is a game-changer.

Before reading this book, I was addicted to all kinds of financial pornography: books, newsletters, investment clubs etc. All of it was in search of the holy grail of investment knowledge...how to beat the market. Sometimes the stress of market volatility would keep me up at night. Then I met Harry Browne and his wisdom.

He makes a very strong case that no one can predict the future in financial markets. Even the cockiest fund managers typically perform poorly over the long run. So I asked myself: why am I wasting all this time and energy trying to beat the market? Isn't there a way to get the historical returns of stocks (about 10%/year) with little stress-inducing volatility or my most precious resource--time? Browne says yes...it's called the Permanent Portfolio.

It's like that rotisserie chicken oven on late night infomercials: "Just set it and forget it!" All of the economic environments are covered by Browne's Permanent Portfolio: inflation, deflation, prosperity, recession. No matter what people are worried about today, you're covered. You can let everyone else debate (because they don't know anyway). Browne's Portfolio has returned an average of 9.9% (roughly 5-6% over inflation) with extraordinarily low volatility for the last 40 years--which puts your mind at ease so you can go off and live life without worry.

That level of peace-of-mind has no value--it's priceless. I'll be forever indebted to Harry Browne for writing this book. I highly encourage you to read it and do a little research for yourself. I think you'll feel the same way.

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Sex But Never Thought To Ask; Answering our seemingly inexhaustible fascination with sex, Orloff and Baker present a beguiling compendium of facts, observations, lists and general oddities. From the Temple of the Vestal Virgins to the Washington Monument, this comprehensive, sometimes irreverent, and always uproarious exploration of sexuality delves deep undercover to bring readers the most fascinating and scandalous information available on humanity's oldest (and still favourite) preoccupation. For example, did you know: That until the mid-1600s, scientists believed that each sperm cell contained a tiny human being? That Romans and Egyptians used condoms, but it wasn't until a physician crafted one from sheep's intestine for Charles II that the term 'sheepskin' came into use? That by playing Six Degrees of Sexual Separation you can get Carmen Electra into bed with Joan Collins - or Al Pacino into bed with Frank Sinatra - in just six easy steps? These are just a few of the amazing facts on offer in the funniest book currently available on sex and sexuality.

Silent Soul: The Miracles And Mysteries Of Audrey Santo, by Antonia Felix

Three days a week, visitors from around the world enter the chapel of a small home in Worcester, Massachusetts. They have come to witness the Communion host that suddenly manifested a dark stain of blood during a Mass in this very room. Most of all, they have come to be near Audrey, the teenage girl who lies in a bedroom at the other end of the house.

Unable to move or speak after a near-drowning accident when she was three years old, Audrey is believed by many to be the source of the miracles in her home. Her family reports that she suffers the stigmata- the bloody suffering of Christ-- every Lenten season. Pilgrims to the Santo home and to Audrey's annual public "outings" claim to have been healed of cancer and other diseases. Lying in her little room, she is surrounded by medical equipment, including a respirator that keeps her alive, round-the-clock care-- and the prayers of her family and countless thousands who believe she has been touched by God.

Audrey Santo, the silent soul at the center of one of America's most famous religious pilgrimage sites, touches the hearts of everyone who hears her story. The doctors who treat her are bewildered by her survival. And her mother, a devout Catholic who has never given up hope that Audrey will fully awaken one day, believes Audrey is "a statement of life in our culture of death."

Is Audrey a messenger of God, part of a divine plan to strengthen people's faith? Or is she a severely disabled girl whose devout, loving family has drawn a miraculous circle of belief around her? What are the nonreligious explanations for the strange phenomena occurring in the Santo home? What is the Catholic Church's view, as announced in the first official report of its ongoing investigation? Is Audrey a "victim soul," taking on the illness and suffering of others? Did she receive this sacred call from Mary when her mother took her to the apparition room at Medjugorje? These questions and more are explored in Silent Soul, a thoughtful, fascinating journey into one of the world's most compelling modern mysteries.

From Publishers Weekly
The compelling story of Audrey Santo, the comatose teen who is regarded by her family as a "victim soul," is by now familiar to devotees of religious phenomena. Audrey, who survived a drowning accident in 1987 at the age of three and is kept alive by medical technology and loving round-the-clock care, continues to attract spiritual seekers while the Catholic Diocese of Worcester, Mass., conducts an investigation into the alleged miracles surrounding her. Felix, who has written biographies of New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, tells Audrey's story from an inquisitor's point of view, attempting to explain, for example, the nature of the stigmata, or sacred wounds, that Audrey supposedly suffers. She also investigates the notion of the "victim soul" and the weeping statues and bleeding communion hosts at the Santo home, by giving readers enough information to draw their own conclusions. Her research appears to be thorough, though the presentation is sometimes ponderous, offering too much detail about tangential topics like the monastery that Audrey's mother, Linda, visited as a girl. A second weakness of the book is the author's lack of access to Linda Santo, who has shielded herself from all but avowedly friendly reporters. Felix has compensated for this admirably by using multiple sources. As a result, her treatise, despite its deficiencies, provides a thoughtful look at the intersection of faith and mystery.

From Library Journal
Audrey Santo, a 15-year-old mute and paralyzed girl who has been in her family's care since an accidental near-drowning in 1987, seems to be surrounded by supernatural phenomena. Here, Felix (Wild About Harry, Andrea Bocelli) has made this real-life story both intimate and revelatory through a pilgrimage to Audrey's home in Massachusetts. To understand her subject, Felix interviewed those who claim spiritual or physical healing after visiting the young woman and studied press reports about them. Felix has an ability to share intimate details about individuals without intruding, and although she doesn't come up with any definite answers, her work allows readers to ponder a few important spiritual questions: Do miracles happen? Are natural laws an extension of things manifest in the miracles described? Libraries with patrons interested in modern-day supernatural happenings or collections including mysteries and miracles of contemporary life can add this title with confidence. Its easy reading style is sure to make it a quick browsing pick-up.DLeroy Hommerding, Fort Myers Beach P.L. Dist., FL

From Booklist
Paralyzed, unable to speak, and semi-comatose since a tragic accident at the age of three, 16-year-old Audrey Santo has been a source of inspiration and spiritual strength for the countless numbers of religious pilgrims who have flocked to her Worcester, Massachusetts, home over the course of the past decade. Many of the faithful who have viewed Audrey through a window in her bedroom wall or prayed in the small chapel on the Santo property fervently believe that Audrey is responsible for generating a variety of miraculous phenomena. Statues and religious images in the Santo home appear to weep blood or oil, and perhaps most intriguing of all, hundreds of visitors have claimed they have been both physically and spiritually healed through Audrey's silent intercession. Reports of these apparent miracles have prompted the Roman Catholic Church to initiate an investigation. Taking no concrete stand on the status and the credibility of the Santo miracles, Felix provides an objective chronicle of a fascinating series of seemingly supernatural occurrences. Learning from the silence...
By RoseRunner :-)
This is a story about a little girl who became a silent voice for Christ after a near fatal drowning accident when she was 3 years old. I believe, through the love and care of her Mother, family and friends, that little Audrey has brought many people closer to Christ. This is a priceless gift to our world and Audrey has done this without ever saying a word. Little Audrey has brought me closer to Christ and for this I shall be forever grateful to Audrey and to those who have cared for her over the years. In her silence, I believe that Audrey has touched the lives of countless people in a positive way. Although she is no longer here with us physically on earth, may she continue to come to us in the silence to lead us all closer to Christ and peace on earth. I thank you, Audrey and Linda (your Mother) for sharing your love...

My daughter and I; wrote to Audrey for her prayers when my mom was dying of cancer.
By J. Pitcher
I bought several copies of this book which came out (2001) two years before my mother's death in 2003. The one thing I asked for was her prayers for my mom's conversion as she was a staunch atheist. Looking back now 12 years to her receiving last rites on her death bed and the appearance of a priest at three am as she gasped for breath was so amazing to me then and now. The request for Audrey's prayers is the one thing that keeps coming to my mind that made the difference. I got an answer back frm the family that the request had been read to Audrey and received some of the holy oil for my mom. If you knew how hopelessly unlikely my mom's conversion appeared
during that time; you would also be amazed. I was surprised to find this book in my mom's personal effects.

The Royalty of Negro Vaudeville: The Whitman Sisters and the Negotiation of Race, Gender and Class in African American Theater 1900-1940

The Whitman Sisters were the highest paid act on the Negro Vaudeville Circuit, Theater Owner Booking Association (Toby), and one of the longest surviving touring companies (1899-1942). The group was considered the greatest incubator of dancing talent for Negro shows on or off Toby, and significantly contributed to American theater and dance history. In The Royalty of Negro Vaudeville , Nadine George-Graves provides an historical narrative of their achievements and uses black feminist theories, feminist theories of performance, and theories of class and popular culture to analyze the many layers of performance in which the Whitman Sisters participated, on and off the stage. She shows that these four black women manipulated their race, gender and class to resist hegemonic forces while achieving success. By maintaining a high-class image, they were able to challenge fictions of racial and gender identity.

Good Subject, Weak Conclusions
By Gus, Minnie & Lonnie are the Best!
Evidently this is a tough subject or subjects to track down. The author has the tendency to repeat the same assumptions which at times are based on rather weak facts. Rather than all the repetition, why not take a look at some of the other companies. It would have been interesting if the author had done some research on the Hyers Sisters who preceded the Whitman Sisters by about 15 years in Vaudeville and compared the two companies. Put in that perspective, were the Whitman Sisters that unique or were they more a product of their times?

Also the author neglected to mention that a major Blues and Jazz musician by the name of Lonnie Johnson just happened to be with the Whitman Sisters for nine years. Yes, I realize the book is about negotiation of race and feminist policies but at least a paragraph or two was warranted.

Excellent resource
By Amazon Customer
An excellent book, well written and meticulously researched. Not only does Nadine George-Graves provide fascinating and useful information about the Whitman Sisters, she also discusses, in great detail, the social and cultural circumstances surrounding their historical moment. The information on Toby, the black vaudeville circuit, is invaluable. Much of what George-Graves writes about hasn't been written about elsewhere, making her book all the more unique and important.
This is a short book - only 118 pages - but the amount of information it contains makes it indispensible for anyone interested in vaudeville, dance, or African-American theater.

Important Black Women's History Unearthed
By A Customer
Like Alice Walker, who resurrected the work of Zora Neale Hurston, Nadine George-Graves has uncovered the lost story of powerful African-American women: the Whitman Sisters. A powerful force in Vaudeville, these profoundly talented entertainers were also astute entrepeneurs, whose company formed a springboard for many luminaries of the stage. We are in Ms. George-Graves debt for bringing to light this important history.
