Weimar and the Rise of Hitler (The Making of the Twentieth Century), by A. J. Nicholls

This fourth edition of the classic text on the Weimar Republic begins with Germany's defeat in 1918 and the revolutionary disturbances that followed the collapse of Wilhelm II's Empire. It describes the strengths and weaknesses of the new regime, and the stresses created by the economic difficulties of the 1920s. Adolf Hitler's career is traced from its early beginnings in Munich, and the nature of his movement is assessed. This edition, updated throughout and considerably expanded, takes full account of the last decade of research, including recent debates on the nature of the German revolution of 1918-19, the relationship between political upheavels and economic crises, and the question of whether there really was an alternative to the Third Reich in January 1933. The chronological table and extensive bibliography add to the book's value as both an introduction to Weimar and a stimulus to further study.

By Anthony R Zupancic
It's a blow by blow account of the fall of Weimar, which can be tedious. Nicholls's argument is that the Republic failed for political reasons, not economic. But, his own argument often seems to prove the opposite. This isn't surprising given how intertwined economics and politics are. In fact, that's likely the more nuanced argument he should have made - that economic factors and poor political responses led to the Republic's fall. If I have to revise his thesis for him, however, to me that's a problem.

Even if you choose this book to help understand the fall of Weimar, you will need another source that looks at intellectual/cultural causes as well... Fritz Stern's "Politics of Cultural Despair" might be the best choice for that. Peter Gay's "Weimar Culture" won't really fill the roll, but is a nice short read that will add to your understanding of the opportunities Weimar offered to "outsiders."

If you're more interested in the "rise of Hitler" part of this title, I would direct you toward Robert Proctor's "Racial Hygiene" or William Allen's "Nazi Seizure of Power." Both are also much more approachable and easy to read, which will appeal to most buyers who aren't in academia.

This is a very good, detailed, but to the point, book which identifies the characteristics of Weimar and why it failed. It's not for a general reader, however. One has to be kind of a political junkie to appreciate the detailed explanations.

The Tao Oracle is a visual I-Ching- a beautiful and dazzling new tool for self transformation, enlightenment, and personal growth

"Meditation is that hundred and eighty degree turn that strengthens our capacity to trust, as it puts us in touch with a silent, guiding force that is far greater than ourselves in its wisdom, support and sustaining capacity. To relax into the flow of the Tao in its unfoldment is to experience being 'at home in life.' This meditation takes us to what has been called the still point, the center of the cyclone, the great silence, the inner Himalayan peaks." --Ma Padma
The Tao Oracle is a "visual I-Ching." It features no coins, no sticks, but cards featuring paintings, symbols, colors and key words, along with a clear, simple book to help you interpret the results. From Publishers Weekly
A painter and the designer of the Osho Zen Tarot, Padma combines principles of tarot and the symbols of the I Ching in this illuminated approach to divination. "Tarot is a pillar of wisdom from the West; the I Ching, a pillar of wisdom from the East," she writes. "They are different esoteric paths approaching the same mountain peak." With the aim of helping seekers "look within," Padma offers this dual system. The directions, which are a bit confusing for those unfamiliar with casting, require the seeker to use three coins in order to access the changing nature of his or her question; the lushly illustrated tarot deck gives answers to the question, and the accompanying booklet offers interpretations of these answers. This method not recommended for the novice or the impatient, but it's an interesting new approach for those already comfortable with divination.

Not your run-of-the-mill Oracle set...
By leimar
For those coming from the Tarot tradition this may take a little work but it's worth it. If you have prior knowledge of the I Ching then you'll make the connections easily, is my guess. I love the illustrations of the cards and the detailed explanations and information in the book. I find this deck fascinating and intend to work with it more deeply.

A fine reference book
By A Customer
This sizable book (900+ pages) is not the most up to date production in town (no biography of Garth Brooks here), but if you want a book that gives the history of many famous & not so famous country musicians, then I recommend this.
I can't open it to read about one artists without spending an hour in the book as I get absorbed reading about someone I've never heard of or forgot about.
The biographies are complete. Maybe the discographies are a little bit sketchy & in some cases incomplete or even incorrect, but it is my experience of such reference works that they all miss something out or get something wrong.
I'd certainly recommend this for someone who does want a little (a lot!) more than just what is on country radio at present.

Old-fashioned, but good guide to hick music
By DJ Joe Sixpack
A massive book which has in many ways been superceded by other, later works. It's a bit bulky, with a layout which is a bit flat. Still, it includes entries on some artists which other guides may omit; the discographies are a bit suspect, though, particularly when it comes to little things like getting the titles right. You could opt for the newer, sexier country guides, but this one still has something to offer, particularly the longer, more narrative biographical entries.

Harold Bloom's Shakespeare examines the sources and impact of Bloom's Shakespearean criticism. Through focused and sustained study of this writer and his best-selling book, this collection of essays addresses a wide range of issues pertinent to both general readers and university classes: the cultural role of Shakespeare and of a new secular humanism addressed to general readers and audiences; the author as literary origin; the persistence of character as a category of literary appreciation; and the influence of Shakespeare within the Anglo-American educational system. Together, the essays reflect on the ethics of literary theory and criticism.

From Library Journal
Bloom's exhaustive examination of all of Shakespeare's plays, Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human, was published in 1998 to great critical acclaim and became a best seller, a rarity for a literary study. Bloom's veneration of the Bard and his dismissal of most contemporary Shakespearean criticism, however, has made him a target for scholars who do not share his opinions. This collection of 18 essays, which came about at a 2000 conference in Toronto of the Shakespeare Association of America, examines Bloom and his theories. Three of the articles praise Bloom's book, ten are opposed to most aspects of his work, and five are mixed. The essays run the gamut of present-day critical studies, ranging from historical and character perspectives to criticism with feminist or racial slants on individual plays or themes. Primarily for scholars who are fascinated by literary controversies, this book is recommended for graduate-level collections in academic libraries. Morris Hounion, New York City Technical Coll. Bloom still controversial
By a reader
This anthology was recommended to me by someone who loved Bloom's huge

book Shakespeare and the Invention of the Human. The recommender hadn't

read it, but thought it would be a celebration of Bloom. It partly is, but mostly

it takes up the controversy over Bloom's role in the literary reception of Shakespeare over the last twenty years. Most of the essays are very readable and enjoyable. Particularly good are essays by Hawkes, Fahmi, Desmet, and Charnes. Linda

Charnes' concluding essay "The Two Percent Solution: what Harold Bloom forgot" is

a knockout, a tour de force on what's wrong, and right, with Bloom, and with literary criticism in general these days. Anyone interested in the controversy over Bloom and the Bard would greatly enjoy reading through the essays in this book.

The Hidden Jesus: A New Life, by Donald Spoto

This work presents a vision of Jesus Christ that remained hidden to his contemporaries. Spoto challenges many of the Church's interpretations of Jesus' teachings, by stating there is no legitimate barrier to women being priests and that portions of the New Testament are anti-Semitic.

Amazon.com Review
Celebrity biographer and former monk Donald Spoto (author of Diana: The Last Year) applies his impressive research skills to the life of Jesus. From the get go, Spoto makes it clear that he's willing to upend many of the dominant beliefs about Jesus. For example, Spoto asserts that Jesus was born in Nazareth, not the little town of Bethlehem. (Matthew and Luke apparently placed their accounts of the birth in Bethlehem, the home of King David, in order to substantiate the belief that Jesus descended from the line of David.) And so it goes, with Spoto stating that the virginal conception should not be literally interpreted, that there is no evidence of an unusually bright star around the time of Jesus' birth, and that Jesus was not an only child, but in fact the eldest of seven.

Fortunately, Spoto maintains a respectful and pensive tone throughout--a welcome departure from the tawdry details of some of his celebrity biographies. Spoto uses his investigative talents to reveal the meaning as much as the historical facts of Jesus' life and afterlife. At its core, The Hidden Life of Jesus is a Christian's personal quest and resulting theory into the ultimate meaning and enduring impact of Jesus of Nazareth. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
Spoto, author of Diana: The Last Year, turns his considerable storytelling skills to the life of the one person who can clearly claim greater celebrity than the departed princess: Jesus. Calling Jesus the "man nobody knows," Spoto offers a chronicle that moves from Jesus's birth to his death and resurrection. Although Spoto relies on the chronology of the Gospels for the structure of his book, he cannily weaves literary criticism, historical research and theological scholarship into his story of the life and work of one of history's most enduring figures. Along the way, Spoto contends that the Gospel writers were great propagandists more concerned with using Jesus's life to assert their own agendas than with revealing the historical details of that life in order to hide the real Jesus from his followers (e.g., Spoto reads Matthew's story of Jesus's birth in Bethlehem as an effort to connect Jesus with King David in the minds of his audience). Spoto also argues that the virgin birth of Jesus can't be understood literally, that though anti-Semitism pervades the New Testament it is not part of God's revealed truth and that "Jesus was viewed both during and after his lifetime as an exorcist and a healer... not merely a teacher of ethical maxims or a preacher of religious truths." Spoto's biography, written with impressive clarity and pace, is as much a record of the his own spiritual search to find the hidden Jesus of his own life as it is a search for the hidden Jesus of Christianity.

From Library Journal
Before he wrote celebrity biographies, Spoto was a monk and New Testament scholar. In a work that often challenges the received word, he takes on the greatest celebrity of them all.

Through a glass darkly
By Dr. Tom Mote
As a Southern Baptist who has spent [1] the last 36 years as a professor in a Roman Catholic university and [2] the 69 years since his conversion wondering why he had never been able to experience the blinding, "born again" feeling of the Apostle Paul or Jimmy Carter or many other sincere Southern Baptists, I am delighted to report that the several hours I have just spent in absorbing much of Donald Spoto's wisdom have been very instructive. At this point, let me make one constructive criticism. Many of his sentences, like my first one in this review, are so long and complex that I had to re-read them before becoming comfortable with the content. On balance, however, this is a book that I will read again and again and will recommend it to my family and friends.

A wonderful book about Christ and His meaning for modern man
By A Customer
What a fascinating and exciting book! It's fascinating because at least in my some 16 years of Catholic education throughout grade school to high school and college an in-depth analysis of Jesus' life really wasn't part of the religious education; this book details enormously interesting details of the life of Christ. It's exciting because of the emphasis given and arguments for the presence of the risen Christ in our midst today, not just 2000 years ago. Do I disagree or have doubts about some of Spoto's assertions (was Christ really born in Bethlehem, did He have brothers and sisters, did He know He was God, did his parents know He was God, can one beleive in capital punishment and still be a Christian)? Clearly, yes, I disagree with some of his points. But there are no critical or essential points of the Christian faith(or Catholic faith for that matter) that are disputed by him. I do not for a second doubt the author's love and belief in the risen Christ "that the gospels proclaim". The greatest asset of this book is in it's elucidation of God's ever present love and compassion for us and how we find the "hidden Jesus" in our lives. This truly is a wonderful book that strengthens one's faith and love in Jesus Christ, our risen lord. Highly recommended!

Spoto's book is serious, thought-provoking and reverent
By A Customer
Standing applause for Mr. Spoto's effort. His previous oeuvre of celebrity biographies almost prevented me from picking it up, but as I read it I was entranced and ashamed at my prejudice. I found it hard to put down: a two day read. He not only deals systematically with the life of Christ but sheds light on a number of related issues showing how, for a Christian, Christology is central. The book is intellectually upright yet highly readable and unpretentious, and in my view superior in interest and execution to other fine recent efforts by A. N. Wilson and E.P. Sanders. As a reasonably well read layman, I found nothing theologically offensive in it, quite the contrary. He makes a splendid effort at describing the MEANING of Christ and the risen Christ, and all without the smell of the lamp or the academy. Highly recommended.

Region and Nation: Politics, Economy and Society in Twentieth Century ArgentinaFrom Palgrave Macmillan

The study of twentieth-century Argentine history is undergoing a radical transformation. Both Argentine and U.S. historians of Argentina are recasting the great debates in the historiography by challenging the Buenos Aires-centered focus of most of the existing historical scholarship and offering a new perspective on the country's modern history. Argentina's supposed 'exceptionalism' is being challenged by these historians. The persistence of political clientilism and oligarchic rule, enclave economies and pre-capitalist social relations, the role of traditional institutions such as the Church and family, intense class conflict and working class militancy, all approximate Argentina closer to the Latin American experience than the previous historiography would suggest. This book is a unique collaboration between Argentine and U.S. historians of this 'other Argentina.'

How Shall We Tell Each Other of the Poet?: The Life and Writing of Muriel RukeyserFrom Palgrave Macmillan

Muriel Rukeyser, the late poet, journalist, translator, biographer, pilot, and social activist, has been described as an "American Genius" and our "20th century Whitman." Anne Sexton and Erica Jong both referred to Muriel Rukeyser as "the Mother of Everyone." To read her collected work is to track American history through the century and to question with her the particular nature of the American imagination. Rukeyser began publishing in the 1930s, writing about Sacco and Vanzetti, the Scottsboro boys, and the Popular Front’s stand against fascism, insisting always on the link between public subjects and the personal life. Until she died in 1980 at the age of 66, she persisted in bringing the events of the world into poetry, and poetry into the world. Her writing stretches the American poetic imagination, indeed the very definitions of American poetry, and guarantees her place in 20th-century American literature. "How Shall We Teach Each Other of the Poet?" brings together the voices of those who have been challenged by the complexity and richness of Rukeyser’s poems: former friends, colleagues, editors, and students reflecting on their personal knowledge of the poet; contemporary poets probing the significance of Rukeyser as one who influenced their own poetry, and scholars offering new interpretations of her work.

From Library Journal
Even if Muriel Rukeyser never attained the status of Whitman or Dickinson, the poets Adrienne Rich compares her to in one of these essays, she was an American original. She was less a marquee poet than a force of nature, an imposing woman who gave herself to a variety of aesthetic positions, political causes, and passionate friendships and antagonisms. (Gerald Stern recalls being taunted by an audience member when he and Rukeyser read together once and starting to defend himself by saying, "I don't want to be mean," only to hear Rukeyser whisper, "Be mean, be mean.") Herzog and Kaufman, English professors at West Chester University and the University of Utah, respectively, gather writings by 37 Rukeyser fans; a number of these pieces are poems, the most luminous of which is Richard Howard's "A Sibyl of 1979," in which he describes being given a computer that had baffled Rukeyser, finding in it some draft phrases she had left there, and making them into his own tribute to her. From Booklist
Rukeyser (1913^-80) was shunned by the academy for the freedom of her thinking, her humanitarianism, and her unabashedly Whitmanesque poetic voice. As Denise Levertov, one of the nearly 40 poets and literary scholars whose considerations of and tributes to Rukeyser are collected here, writes, Rukeyser "consistently fused lyricism and overt social and political concern." Reginald Gibbons, another insightful admirer, observes that "Rukeyser aimed not at grace but at inquiry and witness and re-imagining." A writer, scholar, single parent, pilot, and activist, Rukeyser linked art to politics and science, and glided with ease from poetry to biography to children's books to translation to literary criticism, a fluidity that endeared her to poets but vexed critics and led to a vanishing of her works like that of an endangered species. But editors Herzog and Kaufman and contributors such as Gerald Stern, Adrienne Rich, and Richard Howard have set out to redress this neglect, and Rukeyser does, indeed, emerge from these pages, vibrant, defiant, gifted, and embracing. Donna Seaman

Review
“Rukeyser does ...emerge from these pages, vibrant, defiant, gifted, and embracing.” —Booklist

“This book celebrates the fact that times have changed. We are at a moment in the history of poetry and ideas in the United States that is particularly receptive to the inclusiveness of Rukeyser's vision. We are ready to know her better, and 'How Sall We Tell Each Other of the Poet?' provides the means.” —Women's Review of Books

inspiring chronicle of an inspiring life
By Liza
I should preface this by telling you that I am fanatically devoted to Muriel Rukeyser's work and so may present a somewhat extreme perspective. As a high-schooler, it is one of my deepest hopes that my generation will awaken to this amazing and underappreciated woman. As Muriel Rukeyser's poems are monuments, so is her life itself. She was a tremendous force for artistic vision and social conscience. As a reflection of such a life, this book could hardly go wrong, and it is indeed intensely thought-provoking and inspiring.
I found the organization of the book to be effective on the whole. Rather than a single narrative, it is a collection of writings from a range of people including Adrienne Rich, and Muriel Rukeyser's son, William Rukeyser. It's divided into five parts: 1. Poetics and Vision; 2. Activism and Teaching; 3. The Body, Feminist Critique, and the Poet as Mother; 4. Poetry of Witness; 5. Remembering Muriel Rukeyser. For the most part the divisions seemed somewhat arbitrary, but of course dividing a life into such categories is a near impossible task. I enjoyed the mix of literary critique with personal stories. There were also a surprisingly large number of poems about/inspired by Muriel Rukeyser, and these were of mixed quality. On the whole, the book admittedly had it's hits and it's misses, but it was absolutely worth it for the hits. I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about Muriel Rukeyser (and that should, of course, be everyone).

There is a lot to learn in this portrayal of a Poet
By BfloBen
If you are not that familiar with the work of Muriel Rukeyser (and I am not) you have lots to learn about what you missed. The essays individually portray aspects of the poet and collectively are a beautiful chorus of mixed voices that all share in common a deep reverence for her work and life. I add myself as a late arriving admirer of this formidable artist and activist.

Terrific Book!
By Amazon Customer
For anyone who has no idea but is curious about the gaming industry, then this is the book to get! For all I know ( for I am also a novice), this book covers everything about the world of gaming - game industry terminology, different game platforms, presenting concept ideas, receiving intellectual property. I know all that makes very little sense to a novice reader, but trust me, after reading this book, you'll know what I'm talking about. And for those already with jobs, but are hoping to make a career change into the gaming industry, this book provides encouraging yet practical advice on how to get started on achieving your goal. Simple things like what sort of education and internships. This book is also meant for those already in the gaming industry. It provides tips and advice on how to get your ideas on a distributor's list of possibilities and how to recieve as much credit for your idea's success. However, I'm not saying that with this book and this book alone will you be on your way to working for a major developer/distributor. The points made in this book are very blunt and straightforward. It'll explain how your love for games will be your only drive when forced to devote about 95% of your life to getting your game done on schedule. This book filters out the idealistic views of game-making to a practical cutthroat business where one minute you'll be recieving $70,000 pay for working on a game and the next being broke and out of the job and having to force an early release of the game which you've put so much time and energy into so that it can go to becoming one of the games that get sent into the discount bin. But that, with experience and determination, you may someday end up creating the next Half-Life or Call of Duty!!!

You Can't Catch Death: A Daughter's Memoir, by Ianthe Brautigan

In all of the obituaries and writing about Richard Brautigan that appeared after his suicide, none revealed to Ianthe Brautigan the father she knew. Through it took all of her courage, she delved into her memories, good and bad, to retrieve him, and began to write. You Can't Catch Death is a frank, courageous, heartbreaking reflection on both a remarkable man and the child he left behind.

Amazon.com Review
His daughter was 24 when quintessential '60s author Richard Brautigan (Trout Fishing in America) killed himself in 1984, and the obituaries were almost as painful for her as his tragic act. "I did not recognize the dignified, brilliant, hysterically funny, and sometimes difficult man who was my father in anything they wrote," says Ianthe Brautigan, who makes it her business to capture those qualities in this poignant memoir. Her recollections of an unsettled childhood bouncing between two free-spirited parents' bohemian homes (in San Francisco, Montana, Hawaii, and Japan) are remarkably free from bitterness, even when she chronicles drunken phone calls from her suicidal father. Alcohol was Richard Brautigan's fatal weakness, prompted by severe depressions rooted in an impoverished, unhappy childhood. But Ianthe also depicts his tenderness and warmth, the magical sessions of impromptu storytelling with writer buddies like Tom McGuane and Jim Harrison, the glamour of meeting movie stars Peter Fonda and Margot Kidder. She comes to terms with the past that always haunted her father when she makes a trip to Oregon to see her grandmother, estranged from Richard for 25 years. Without presuming to solve the mystery of his death, the author reclaims the values of Brautigan's life and work in her touching, sensitively written book. --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly
Richard Brautigan (1937-1984) made a big splash with Trout Fishing in America (1967), whose unbuttoned prose found a ready-made audience in the burgeoning counterculture. Brautigan completed 11 more books of fiction and nine of poetry before he took his own life; he is now remembered as a campus favorite, and a notorious drinker. His daughter Ianthe aims to supplant that portrait with a more complex and tender view; her raw, affecting and largely admiring memoir recalls "R.B." as a father and as a writer. Rather than follow his life, or her own, from the late '60s to the early '80s, Ianthe breaks her book up into short sectionsAsome narrative, some meditative, some impressionisticAin a manner mildly reminiscent of Trout Fishing itself. In one three-page segment, the adult Ianthe tells her own daughter about Richard's suicide. In the next two pages, Ianthe recalls the bike she got for her ninth birthday. The piece after that (one paragraph) is purely lyrical: "Sometimes the love I have for my father overtakes my whole being... " (A series of single paragraphs, scattered throughout, describe Ianthe's dreams.) The elder Brautigan comes off as energetic, affectionate, playful, outrageous and needyAincreasingly so as the '70s wore on. His death and Ianthe's progressive reactions to it dominate much of the book. Ianthe's memoir creates a vivid sense of her continuing loss and shows how she has come to terms with it. Her work should please "R.B."'s still-ardent fans, who will seek (and find) facts about a father, and leave with a new, moving knowledge of his daughter. Author tour. (June) FYI: Ianthe's memoir appears at the same time as her father's newly published novella, An Unfortunate Woman, a forgotten manuscript she discovered (see review in this issue's Fiction Forecasts).

This is Not Her Father's Story
By Redhog
Although I began reading You Can't Catch Death with the expectation that it would be about her father, Ianthe Brautigan quickly set me straight; this book is about her. Reading the book provides a fascinating look at her turbulent childhood with a talented, but troubled father. A father who clearly loved his daughter but, just as clearly, didn't quite know what to do with her.
Brautigan the younger is a skilled wordsmith whose first book displays a polish and readability usually associated with more `seasoned' authors. Whether or not you appreciate Richard Brautigan, after reading this book you will appreciate his daughter.

Brautigan's Daughter Finds Her Voice
By MARTIN AVERY
I love this book. It is as painful to read as going to the funeral of a friend or a writer whose work you loved. It is as rewarding as the grieving process. We've been wondering about Brautigan's daughter, the girl with the stange name, Ianthe, and this book of hers lets us know all about her. This memoir she has taken so long to write suggests she has struggled to find her own voice, as a writer, and I am happy to report that her father's style has influenced her enormously. That's a very good thing. I will look forward to the publication of the next Brautigan and I will be as sad it is not by Richard as I am happy it is by his daughter, Ianthe. Write a novel, Ianthe, write short stories and short short stories, too. We'll be waiting patiently for you.

A daughter's touching tribute
By Mary G. Longorio
In an effort to reconcile memories, dreams and fears with real life, Ianthe Brautigan writes of her life with father, Richard Brautigan. After he took his own life in 1984, she was left with memories and what-ifs. This book is her journey into remembering and discovering her father and his life. Within the pages of this book lies a healing journey, back to the terrible drinking times, back to the grandmother she never knew, back to treasured morinings at her father's San Francisco apartment, and other times shared with her father. Photos capture the fragments of that life, and let us glimpse again at the shy, wild-haired Brautigan. Somewhere in facing down deamons and fears of this past life, I feel she somehow reclaims her own life and is no longer afraid of the future. This book had a powerful impact on me. The story of a daughter trying to gather the pieces of her life and to set them out to study, is a portrait of courage and grace.
