4 stars for slightly damaged product
By snagan
Oh my gawd! J.G. is the best! His prose makes my heart flutter. His creativity leaves me awe struck. And wrap it all up with the actual food reviews in a neat little box and I'm left entertained and inspired. I don't even care that this book is old and probably out of date. His writing is colorful, though provoking and timeless. 5 stars for this book.

4 stars because the book came damaged and bent, of which I did not buy a used book. The book stays completely cracked open to the middle of the book like the spine is broken but it's not.

My favorite prose writer
By aiwf
Jonathan Gold is my favorite prose writer. I have read his reviews in the LA Weekly out loud, laughing hysterically, for years. He introduced me to Zankou Chicken and their amazing garlic sauce. This book replaces the file folder full of years of LA Weekly clippings that ride around with me in the car as I eat my way across L.A. I've also bought copies for my house, my office, and my foodie friends. I'm looking forward to Counter Intelligence II, which I hope will have Quanjude Peking Duck in it. Yes, L.A. has its own Peking duck restaurant, which I learned about through Jonathan Gold.

From Publishers Weekly
Shobin's latest medical thriller seizes on the recent surge in the use of herbal supplements in large doses and takes the potential danger to its lethal extreme. Dr. Steve McLaren, a Long Island M.D. with a troubled past, displays herbal supplements made by Ecolabs in his office and touts them in TV ads as a favor to Ted DiGiorgio, a med-school dropout friend who founded the herbal supplement company. A hot new product is Restore-Tabs, a miracle weight-loss supplement that also enhances female sex drive and counters the effects of aging. Steve calls Ted when some patients using the product develop extreme vaginal bleeding, but Ted pleads ignorance. When the situation worsens, Steve is put on to the Ecolabs PR head, the alluring Francesca Taylor, who suggests that he do his own field test with his patients using Restore-Tabs and placebos. Romance ensues, but when Steve contacts the FDA, attempts are made on his life, scandalous rumors about him begin to circulate and patient files are stolen. As Ted grows erratic and paranoid, Francesca offers to sneak Steve into Ted's office to retrieve secret information to build a case for the FDA. Shobin (Terminal Condition), a physician himself, builds a credible medical plot with unscrupulous Third World field tests and greedy entrepreneurs. The parallel narrative unfolding in Indonesia is at least as engrossing as the American section of the book, but the writing throughout tends toward ham-fistedness, and readers may have a hard time swallowing many of the outlandish plot twists. (Feb.)Forecast: This run-of-the-mill medical thriller should perform adequately, but no more. Word of mouth won't breathe vitality into sales, and it's questionable whether a novel that the publisher compares to "Robin Cook meets Michael Palmer" can develop a market personality all its own.

From Library Journal
This seventh novel by Shobin (The Provider, Terminal Condition) is a formulaic but well-written and affecting medical thriller. Steve McLaren, a Long Island physician who has endorsed the use of Restore Tabs, a herbal supplement for women, becomes concerned when he begins to suspect that it is causing seriously adverse reactions in his patients. Youthful, handsome, and dedicated to those in his care, Steve embarks on a risky journey that leads to the discovery of the origins of the supplement and to a horrifying understanding of the true goals and character of its producers and distributors. Steve is an appealing protagonist, and it is his personal and family relationships that give this novel some depth and readability. There's also an educational aspect to this book, which raises issues about natural and herbal supplements as well as the regulatory loopholes that govern their availability. A worthy addition to fiction collections.DLinda M.G. Katz, Florence A. Moore Lib. of Medicine, MCP Hahnemann Univ., Philadelphia

From Booklist
A nutritional tablet may seem too flat to be the mainspring of a thriller, but when it leads to the hysterectomy of a 13-year-old, an attack by a poisonous jellyfish that carries halfway around the world, and bodies littering Indonesia and a New York research lab, it serves well enough. Shobin's fictional nutrient is derived from marine plants that are secreted in South Pacific coral reefs. The reefs are blown up, dried, pulverized, and sent to New York for processing; and clinical trials are conducted on poor Indonesian women. Unfortunately, the basic substance in the tablets is a too-potent estrogen. As the plot thickens and the pace accelerates, anxiety, desire, and advertising lead to overdoses, cancer, and death. The principals include unsure but persistent physician Steve McLaren, single mom Julia, and ex-marine turned "enforcer" Jack Buhlman. Shobin's style and characterization skills help keep the yarn lively and believable, the kind that fans of medical thrillers, detective novels, and other action genres should enjoy. William Beatty

A SUSPENSEFUL MEDICAL THRILLER
By Nick G
Restore Tabs are taking the nation by storm. This new miracle drug will help women lose weight, feel good, and increase their sex-drive...and the best part-the pills are all natural.
Steve McClaren is the young doctor and spokesperson for Ecolab, the company behind this new drug.
Suddenly, when a string of patients taking Restore Tabs become extremely ill, Steve wants answers.
In his quest for answers, Steve will become the target of a killer. Trying to stay one step ahead of the killer, he must race the clock to save anyone from dying, including himself.
"The Cure" is a fast-paced, engrossing medical thriller, that blasts off page one and speeds non stop to it's climax.
In a time when many well-known authors are claiming to write medical thrillers, David Shobin, is doing it; taking a very trendy topic and spinning a completely nightmarish, and believable story. Readers will not be able to put this down.
Place David Shobin next to Michael Palmer on your must read list.

THE CURE-DELIVERS!
By sandy
The CURE was the most suspenseful read I've gone through in over a year. What I like about David Shobin is his style. Most writers in this genre use shallow, stick-figure characters, but Shobin talks about real people with real issues. Hero Dr. Steve McLaren is an insecure former alcoholic who struggles with his disease. The thorny issue of euthanasia is very tactfully presented. Shobin is a master at getting the most out of his characters. For anyone who likes medical thrillers, this is a must read.

Amazing Book

This is a gripping story that makes you wonder about what you are getting when you walk into GNC or the doctor's office, and walk out with a bottle of pills. The book was a suspenseful read and I couldn't put it down until the last page was turned. I recommend it to everyone, you won't be disappointed.

Open a New Window: The Broadway Musical in the 1960s (Golden Age of the Broadway Musical), by Ethan Mordden

In the 1960s, the Broadway musical was revolutionized from an entertainment characterized by sentimental standards, such as Camelot and Hello, Dolly!, to one of brilliant and bittersweet masterpieces, such as Cabaret and Fiddler on the Roof. In Open a New Window, Ethan Mordden continues his history of the Broadway musical with the decade that bridged the gap between the romantic, fanciful entertainments of the fifties, such as Call Me, Madam, to the seventies when sophisticated fare, such as A Little Night Music and Follies, was commonplace. Here in brilliant detail is the decade and the people that forever transformed the Broadway muscial.

From Publishers Weekly
The prolific Mordden (The Fireside Companion to the Theatre) has juggled two different series in recent years, one fiction and one nonfiction. Now he offers the fourth title in the latter, a decade-by-decade history of American musicals, following on the heels of Coming Up Roses, about the 1950s. Despite Mordden's authoritative, scholarly approach, the book sings with stylish syncopation and chatty humor. The evolution and transition of 1960s Broadway was signaled by the failure of Irving Berlin's Mr. President, Noel Coward's fading glory (Sail Away) and the beginning of The Fantasticks' four-decade run. New concepts emerged, and fresh talents like Bob Fosse and Stephen Sondheim took center stage. With Cabaret in 1966, "the new age begins." Darker themes were introduced in Man of La Mancha, What Makes Sammy Run? and Golden Boy. Detailing the decade's innovations, Mordden tosses in fascinating bits of theatrical lore and history. Hits (Funny Girl) and flops (Sophie) are deftly described with wit, panache and a clever, novelistic eye. Mordden never misses a cue, covering everything from off-Broadway (The Threepenny Opera) to the English musical. Regrettably, the lack of boldface subheads decreases the book's value as a research tool, since many titles are lost in the multitude. Still, scholars will be as anxious to read it as theater enthusiasts. (Nov. 5)Forecast: Readers will wish a CD had been packaged with this tuneful history, but booksellers can fill that gap by displaying the book with appropriate albums. Mordden's regular readers who queue at the TKTS box office will line up at stores for this one.

From Library Journal
With this latest edition in a highly respected series on the history of Broadway musicals, Mordden (Beautiful Mornin': The Broadway Musical in the 1940s) presents a decade of radical change with both the wit and the scholarship that characterized his earlier works. More than a chronology, this work discusses the good and the bad of each production and offers an in-depth discussion of the major shows from Camelot, which Mordden considers the last of the Rogers and Hammerstein era, to Cabaret, which he calls "the essential sixties musical." Mordden doesn't pull any punches in his criticism of the plays, both successes and failures, but he also praises good scores and performances found in many of the plays that never became big hits on Broadway. Throughout, he provides insight into a turbulent era reflected by both the concepts of the shows and the audiences' responses to them. Recommended for all theater collections. Laura A. Ewald, Murray State Univ. Lib., KY

From Booklist
The latest installment in Mordden's series on the history of the American musical is as intelligent and enlightening as its predecessors. Unlike them, it has an air of quiet desperation about it. Previously, Mordden has focused on decades of innovation and growth--the 1920s and 1940s--or, in the case of the 1950s, of peak artistry and popularity. The 1960s, however, were troubled years for the American musical. Tastes were changing, especially among the young. Movies and TV successfully invaded the musical's turf in the popular cultural landscape. Most damaging of all, Broadway production costs rose faster than revenues. Mordden repeatedly documents a moderately popular show, like She Loves Me, or Flora, the Red Menace, whose extended run would have made money in other decades, but which never paid back the original investment in it. With so many such production tales, Mordden's latest, for all its scholarship and fascinating meditations on the big '60s hits--Cabaret, Hair, Hello Dolly --feels as much like a dirge as a celebration. Still the only authority worth reading
By John Spritz
It's interesting to read these Mordden histories together, as I have been doing. The '30s one, "Sing for Your Supper," is downbeat. That era, which we tend to think of as a golden time on Broadway, is for Mordden one of wasted opportunity. The '40s and the '50s are, as you can imagine, when he's in clover.

And I thought this one, on the '60s, would again fall back into despair. But to my delight, he unearths gems I was unfamiliar with, and champions old favorites of mine -- Ben Franklin in Paris, Camelot -- that are either overlooked or pooh-poohed. And there is much in this book that is uplifting, as it points towards the Sondheim shows of the '70s, as it skillfully illustrates the increasing role of economics on the reality of mounting a show.

For anyone with any interest in the Broadway musical -- how it got to be where it is today -- than Mordden is the indespensible guide, guiding us through the nooks and crannies of song.

Musical theater history as good as it gets
By Elkhart
As someone can't resist a book, no matter how bad, on musicals past, I feel like I've found a new best friend in Ethan Mordden. He knows his subject, thinks for himself and writes extraordinarily well. He's quick to confute the common memory - pointing out the unremembered virtues of Camelot, Funny Girl and even The Unsinkable Molly Brown, yet perceptively skewering Hair, Dear World and Zorba. His identification of trends and repeating patterns is brilliant, and at the same time he gave me several good belly laughs, notably when he referred to Ilya Darling as the culmination of 3000 years of Greek culture. A treasure of a book. I'm ready for the 70s, Mr. Mordden.

Another entertaining entry in this series
By Alan
In this installment of Ethan Mordden's decade-by-decade series of books about the Broadway (and off-Broadway) musical, Mordden covers the 1960s.

Perhaps because I know this decade's shows more intimately than I know most of the shows in the earlier decades Mordden has covered, I was surprised to discover a rather large number of factual errors in this one.

And every once in a while in this book Mordden writes something truly bizarre, like his comment that the title song of "Cabaret" comments on "not voting when democrats oppose communazis in elections." Huh? Or his citing of the fact that "Hallelujah, Baby!" lost money even though it won the Tony for Best Musical, which is true but rather misleading if you don't also mention that it had already closed when it won the Tony.

As always, Mordden is a very entertaining writer. He is not shy about stating his opinions, but even when I disagree with him, I almost always enjoy reading him.

This is probably not a book for someone who doesn't already know the subject fairly well. I suspect most musical-comedy addicts will find it hard to put down, as you greedily wait to see what Mordden will say about every show. There are a few shows that Mordden doesn't cover (among them, "Billy" and "Something More"), probably for lack of space. This book definitely could have been a bit longer. But that is my main complaint, except for those factual errors and the several truly bizarre statements.

Isn't it great to want a book to be longer than it is?

Paradigms of Social Change: Modernizaton, Development, Transformation, EvolutionFrom Palgrave Macmillan

Social change has been a recurrent topic of social thought since the 18th century. From Condorcet and Comte, Marx and Spencer up to Durkheim and Weber, the classical authors of social science have reflected on the trajectories and dynamics of human societies. After the second World War, the emergence of a world society has challenged sociology and social anthropology, political science and economics into new sustained research. Today, with intensely felt globalization and the breakdown of once firmly held ideas about the future, the social sciences are requested to reexamine their conceptual and analytical tools. Four paradigms have guided investigations of social change: modernization, development, evolution and more recently, transformation. Confronting these paradigms, this book asks: How do different conceptualizations of social change compare? What are they mainly interested in and what are their corresponding blind spots? How and why has social scientists' reasoning about social change itself changed?

Lost in the American City: Dickens, James, and Kafka, by J. Tambling

In Lost in the American City , Jeremy Tambling looks at European reactions to America and American cities in the nineteenth-century. Dickens visited America in 1842 and his American Notes and Martin Chuzzlewit set the agenda for future discussions of America. Lost in the American City looks at the Dickens legacy through Henry James in The American Scene , through H.G. Wells in The Future in America , and through Kafka, whose novel America (or The Man Who Was Never Heard of Again ) tried to re-write Dickens. Lost in the American City explores the changes in American nineteenth century urban culture which made America so different and so impossible to map for the European, and which made American modernity so unreadable and challenging.

Strip Poker (Sierra Lavotini Mysteries), by Nancy Bartholomew

When Vincent Gambuzzo, the not-so-bright proprietor of the Tiffany Gentleman's Club in Panama City, Florida, loses his business playing poker, his headliner, exotic dancer Sierra Lavotini, faces a crisis. The new sign out front reads BIG MIKE'S HOUSE OF BOOTY, and Big Mike's new business strategy leaves a little to be desired in the class department and even less to the imagination of the increasingly rambunctious clientele.

As the dancers' unofficial leader and mother hen, Sierra leads most of her coworkers in a walkout and schemes to restore Vincent to power. But he's in jail, charged with murdering a man in a shootout at the end of that same disastrous poker game. Can Sierra prove Vincent innocent, help her fellow out-of-work dancers, and manage to make next month's trailer payment without a job?

With the help of her neighbor Raydean, her on-again boyfriend, Panama City Homicide Detective John Nailor, and her "uncle," "Big Moose" Lavotini of the New Jersey syndicate, of course she can, and it adds up to another fantastic ride in this hilarious and sexy series.

From Publishers Weekly
What a game! (Note the title.) What a dame! Sierra Lavotini, the gutsy, busty, blonde exotic dancer who moonlights as a catcher of bad guys, is back for her fourth raunchy and amusing adventure (after 2000's Film Strip). Sierra, along with her fellow dancers, is out of a job after Vincent Gambuzzo, the dim owner of Tiffany Gentleman's Club, loses it in a poker game. When a gang of hoods bursts into the room to seize the take, in the ensuing fracas one player, Denny, is killed and the bouncer is badly injured. The police, including Sierra's boyfriend, John Nailor, arrest Vincent for murder, since the fatal bullet came from his gun. At Denny's wake, Sierra literally stumbles on another corpse. And so it goes. This girl is a magnet for trouble, as one of her friends points out. But with the help of her familiar supporting cast of characters, notably Raydean, her lovable but certifiable trailer-park neighbor, and Fluffy, her hairless Chihuahua, you can count on Sierra to sort it all out. Sierra displays her usual uninhibited candor and bad grammar, neither of which can be attributed to Sister Frances, a former teacher, whose advice she often gives herself. Sierra and Nailor, now an established couple after a long flirtation, enjoy steamy sex, but unexpected competition enters in the person of "Big Moose" Lavotini, a New Jersey mobster whom Sierra has long claimed sight unseen as her uncle to impress others of his ilk. While the murders are satisfactorily resolved, the author leaves a lot of loose ends that need to be tied up and soon! (Nov. 12)(Your Cheatin' Heart).

From Library Journal
After losing his strip club in a poker game, Sierra Lavotini's boss soon finds himself accused of murder. Sierra sexy, smart, and hilarious proceeds to clear his name while still keeping tabs on her out-of-work co-workers. Very entertaining.
Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Sierra Lavotini, the reigning queen of northwest Florida's exotic dance industry, is back in all her sensible, sexy, sarcastic glory. Her boss, Vinny, loses the Tiffany Gentleman's Club in a poker game that is interrupted by an attempted robbery. In the ensuing chaos, one of the players is shot. Vinny is accused of the crime, and Sierra--backed by crazy neighbor Raydean and Chihuahua Fluffy--endeavors to clear his name and rescue the club before its reputation is destroyed by the new owner (who promptly renames it Big Mike's House of Booty). Meanwhile, a family crisis takes her back to Philadelphia for Christmas and away from her faltering relationship with Detective John Nailor. And New Jersey mobster "Big Moose" Lavotini, whose name Sierra has dropped several times in tough situations, shows up to see who's been calling herself his niece. The plot loses a bit of momentum near the end, but the laughs make up for the missteps in this tart read, the fourth in the series. Carrie Bissey

In my opinion, Stip Poker shot Nancy Bartholomew way past Janet Evanovich! I love this series and the characters. If you want action, humor, tears, all out enjoyment for a couple of hours - read any one of Nancy Bartholomew's Sierre Lavotini's books. This one was fantastic - her best yet and I can't wait for the next. It was definitely worth paying for the hardback and is now sitting in the honored spot on the bookshelf. Thank you, Nancy, for the enjoyable time and for bringing in Moose Lavotini.... he added a touch a spice and mystery!

Getting down to business
By Amazon Customer
In the first three books of the series, Nancy Bartholomew introduced us to Sierra Lavotini, the headliner of the Tiffany's Gentleman's Club in Panama City. Sierra is book smart, loyal and no nonsense. She controls her boss, Vincent Gambuzzo, by hinting to her (non-existent) familial connections to a New Jersey Mafia boss known as `Big Moose' Lavotini. Ms. Bartholomew's books are filled with funny situations, a great supporting cast and a nice, cozy mystery. The author never makes her characters demeaning or condescending but after writing those fun books the writer decides to get a bit serious this time.
It is December and Christmas is just around the corner. Vincent Gambuzzo has lost the club during a poker game and is then accused of killing one of the players. Sierra is exploring her relationship with Detective John Nailor wondering if she has finally found true love. She is unhappy with the club's new management after changing its name to Big Mike's House of Booty that she decides to stage a walkout with the other dancers. Just when everyone needs her to help Vincent and save the club she has to fly to her hometown of Philadelphia to deal with a family emergency. This event will demonstrate how strong Sierra can be with herself.
In STRIP POKER, Sierra Lavotini has matured as a character after her adventures in the previous three books. We get to appreciate how she interacts with her entire family throughout their personal crisis and see the love that they share with each other. With the sole exception of Sierra's kooky neighbor Raydean, the comedy in this book is not so strong but that is all right. We get to see a major change in Sierra's life at the end of the novel making us wish that the next novel comes out soon. I guess it is time to read Ms. Bartholomew's other two novels that introduces Maggie Reid. It should be good.

"Uncle" Moose Lavotini, Come On Down
By Chad Spivak
The beautiful and classy Sierra Lavotini is back in her fourth page-turning adventure. The action is fierce and the stakes are high in this hysterically funny book.
Nancy Bartholomew is quickly becomming a stand-out mystery writer with a nice collection of books. In STRIP POKER, exotic dancer Sierra Lavotini's boss, Vincent, has gambled away the club, and is arrested for murder. While Sierra and the girls walk-out on the new owner, she must find a way to clear Vincent's name so she can make next month's trailor payment. During her escapades, she has to deal with a life-and-death family crisis, her boyfriend's ex-wife, and the infamous New Jersey crime boss, Moose Lavotini.
The book flies by at a blistering pace, peppered with humor, witty dialogue, and some of the strangest settings you could ever imagine. All of the regular characters are back, including the ever-popular, alien-hunting, machine-gun-carrying Raydean. Her off-the-wall, wacky humor is unmatched, and helps make the book one incredibly enjoyable read.
The storyline is fantastic, and the suspense factor is wonderful. Bartholomew keeps you guessing right through to the explosive ending, in which you are still left wondering if what you read really happened. This excellent book is a can't miss. STRIP POKER will leave you "royally flushed."

Hester has encountered just about everything in his 15 years of flying the skies or "riding tin," and he recounts these laugh-out-loud encounters with plenty of attitude and self-deprecating humor. Not to spoil the fun, but a few juicy tidbits include Hester as the hapless victim of a child's projectile vomit, chasing a sparrow around the cabin, mistakenly putting a woman on the wrong flight, and recalling the unfathomable account of an inebriated man defecating atop a liquor cart, to the horror of passengers and crew. Just when you think the stories can't get anymore outlandish he outdoes himself with the titillating antics of amorous couples who vie for membership in the infamous Mile High Club. And did our Mr. Hester himself ever become a member of this elite club? You'll have to read the book to find that out. Believe me, you'll be glad you did--this is the one of the year's funniest reads. --Jill Fergus

From Publishers Weekly
In his debut book of hilarious essays, syndicated columnist Hester expertly recounts "lowlights" from his 16-year career as a flight attendant for major U.S. airlines. Like an angrier, more street-wise Dave Barry, Hester zeroes in on bad trips, in-flight fighting, intolerable co-workers and airline procedures, broken airplanes, bad layovers and sex on airplanes (aka the "Mile High Club"). Addicted to "travel by whim," Hester isn't complaining "The ability to fly for next to nothing is the reason I took this job." He's just sharing: "I once saw a drunken couple puke on each other until they looked as if they'd emerged from a pool of oatmeal. I watched a smug-faced man receiving high altitude fellatio from a woman he'd just met on the flight," as well as "full-blown airplane brawls, passenger stampedes, a flight attendant in the midst of a nervous breakdown, passengers in various stages of undress, and stressed-out flyers attempting to open the emergency exit six miles above the Atlantic." These and other stories (an onboard robbery in which $500,000 was stolen on a 727) will be a revelation to anyone who has flown; Hester's careful, well-paced descriptions show that what happens behind the scenes is worse than one could imagine and that modern attendants take this craziness for granted. Hester also provides a wide assortment of various other true-life airline shenanigans taken from newspapers and wire service reports, which adds to his book's lurid charm. 7 b&w illus.

From Booklist
Flyer beware: this book doesn't have many good things to say about the thrilling adventure that is air travel. The author, who switched from baggage handling to inflight service when it dawned on him that flight attendants didn't have to work outside in subzero weather, has pretty much seen 'em all: unruly passengers, sick passengers, amorous passengers, drunk passengers, nasty passengers, even flight attendants you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. Hester, who also writes a syndicated column ("Out of the Blue") and articles for various magazines, is a skillful raconteur, and no matter how bizarre or maddening the story, he tells it with grace and abundant good nature. Flight attendants, if this book is any indication, work in an environment that could make a war zone seem sedate, and we emerge from this comic horror show with a new respect and admiration for them. Fans of humorist Dave Barry or travel writer Bill Bryson should not miss this one. David Pitt

This is a fun read with a laugh now and then but I felt it dragged just a bit now and then. It does prvidea good picture of the wacky situations airline Flight Attendants are faced with. Its is well worth the time to read and enjoy.

Frequent laughing points
By J. Seigle
Hester streams out his funny (some funny only in the way that you say, "Someday we'll look back on this and laugh.") stories of serving travelers with, really, a laugh a minute. His style is just a litle overly cute, though, as he constantly peppers us with "clever" similes and metaphors, intead of letting the story do the talking (think of putting a cup of sugar on your morning cereal). But nonetheless, the stories are truly great, and this guy has experienced stuff that you just couldn't make up.
Don't look for inside dirt on his employer--either because of his professionalism or his lawyers' advice, he avoids mentioning airlines by name, even when they fire a flight attendant who drank large amounts of water (permitted) for allegedly watering down a drug-test urine sample (not permitted), with no proof and no independent confirmation.
Buy it and plow through it when you need a little light reading, or stories you can read in just a few minutes at a time.

Yeats as Precursor: Readings in Irish, British and American Poetry, by S. Matthews

As both a late Romantic and a modern, W.B. Yeats has proved to be perhaps the most influential poet of the early twentieth-century. In this original study Steven Matthews traces, through close readings of significant poems, the flow of Yeatsian influence across time and cultural space. By engaging with the formalist criticism of Harold Bloom and Paul de Man in their dialogues with Jacques Derrida, he also considers Yeats's significance as the founding presence within the major poetry criticism of the century.

Amazon.com Review
Featured on 20/20 and CNN, and in The New York Times and USA Today, Lexa Rosean, the flamboyant author of Easy Enchantments, has been practicing witchcraft in New York City for over 16 years. Her comprehensive witch's cookbook is based on the tradition of kitchen witchery, meaning that all of the ingredients are probably sitting in your cupboard or desk. After giving readers 13 dos and don'ts for all magical procedures--e.g. "do what ye will, but harm none"--and explaining the importance of the phases of the moon, Rosean delves right into 178 pages of spells that anyone can easily accomplish. For example, to draw together two lovers living in different cities, all you need is a map, pink taper candles, white pushpins, cinnamon chewing gum, and hot chili pepper oil. But how do you get them to move to your city? --P. Randall Cohan

Magically informative
By Josephine Pizzarello
Here are a variety of spells that are not only easy to put together but workable with uncomplicated ingredients. Lexa's Magical Manner's are a well thought out guideline of how to work with this book. Kitchen Witches will especially like this book and it will make a nice addition to anyone's magical library.

Excellent and enjoyable resource
By Pom Lover
I love this book and refer to it all the time. I'm not a Wiccan but I believe in the potency of folk and kitchen witchcraft so the spells in here really hit the spot. First of all, the book is beautifully written: the author has a knack for imbuing each instruction and description with a quality of tactility and enjoyably sensuous mystery which is magical in itself. I like that she spends a lot of time drawing connections between the historical, nutritional and "vibrational" qualities of each ingredient, as well as weaving instructions with personal anecdotes and narratives. The author's humor also adds to the book, and I appreciate her encouraging readers to choose spells whose ingredients particularly resonate with them instead of creating fixed prescriptions.

I haven't tried all the spells but most of the ones I did try worked, albeit sometimes in unexpected ways. I can see how someone interested in the more formal aspects of Wiccan ritual might find this book too "simple", but I appreciate its eclecticism and democratic use of everyday ingredients, which don't take away from the power of the spells in my opinion.

Enchantments for everyone
By Mary Alagna
Many spellbooks make the reader- experienced or otherwise- feel overwhelmed by mysteries inacessible. Not this one. Easy Enchantments empowers the reader to utilize her/his own inherent abilities with no more than a trip to the supermarket and some concentration. The original "witch" worked from her kitchen with the supplies she had readily available. Who needs to spend hours searching for arcane ingredients to spice up their sex life when they have cinnamon on their spice rack? Ms. Rosean manages to teach and entertain all at once. Not to mention that the spells work! Good stuff!
