A Short Book on an Oft-forgotten Emperor

This very hard to find book is the only biography I know of on the Emperor Titus. It is also quite good, and I feel that it is a shame that it wasn't more widely published. The edition for sale here (St. Martin's Press 1984) is an extremely cheap printing. The text looks like it was printed off of Notepad. I don't know anything about Mr. Jones but this feels like a cheap printing of a doctoral thesis. The number of pages is about right (157 of text) and the style seems very scholarly and easy to defend. It is also rare and expensive. If you can find a copy for under $50 get it fast. The text is divided up into fairly commonsense chapters like "Early Career" and "Reign of Titus." I like this a whole lot better than the way that Jones divides it up in his book on Domitian written eight years later. The chapters are in chronological order and are pretty coherent. There is a surprising amount of detail in some of the chapters for such a small book. Overall this is a fairly brief overview of the man's life. Given how short he reigned for it is only to be expected that there isn't more to write about. It's certainly better than the books on the other Flavians Vespasian and Domitian, although there is a book on Domitian by Pat Southern called Domitian: Tragic Tyrant that I haven't read yet but seems to have potential.

Dry, academic read

The book is definitely not written for the general public. Even so, Jones could have made a better attempt to make it a more interesting read. Even if it won't measure up to Adrian Goldsworthy or Arthur Keaveney he could have got it closer to his own book on Domitian. The book flushes out his early relationship with the doomed Britannicus. Good speculation on his early path on the Cursus Honorum (misspelled no doubt). His time under Nero and Vespasian is well researched with good speculation about what went in behind the decisions he and others made. The myth of Titus being a 'big spender' is put to rest. Two elements were not explained well enough to me. The first is the reading I've seen in other books that shows it was not just Vespasian's parsimony that put the empire back in the black, but the ruthless gutting of almost all the wealth in Judea. The finances derived from the sacking of Jerusalem should have been dealt with. Second, knowing the importance of keeping the dynasty strong, Jones does not explore why Titus (and Domitian for that matter to some extent) did not make a good political marriage and crank out some more babies till he got a boy. He was 10 years with Vespasian... how come no kids??..except for a daughter. This book has only 86 pages on new content; the rest is extensive notes and references.
