This book chronicles American history through the stories of the individuals and movements that dreamed of a better future and then took action to make that dream a reality, arguing that the much heralded American spirit was not born as a gift of our founding, but was forged through our adversity and triumphs. From colonial revolutionaries to abolitionists, labor organizers to suffragists, progressives to civil rights activists, it was individuals and movements who dared to go against the American majority that both guarded and created our best national self.

Most Beautiful of the Smith-Astrop decks
By shantidevi
This is an outstanding oracle in its presentation of lunar phases and mansions. The interpretations of the mansions are cross cultural with an emphasis on the Picatrix, which leads to some skipping around -- which is not a problem. It adds breadth and interest.

If the whole set isn't available, it's worth buying the book in English and looking for the cards in another language. This set was printed in Italian, German and French and can be found by the diligent collector at a fairly reasonable price.

_

As noted by another reviewer, there are problems with the lunation tables. Those in the back of the book are almost over (ending in 2015). Still it is a bad idea to use them at all. In 2012, this year, the gibbous and disseminating moons are reversed, and sometimes duplicated. The gibbous moon never follows the full and the disseminating never precedes it. There are other problems with the waning and crescent moon phases. This is a 5 star oracle without that fairly major fault. It is a testament to the high quality of the content and artwork given the errors which seriously undermine the use of the oracle as intended.

Since the tables must be adjusted for use in any time zone other than GMT, if one isn't an astrologer it is best to ignore the tables in the back completely and get an astrological almanac or calendar with all 8 phases (not 4).

The cards can still be adapted to other uses for cartomancy and reflection like any other oracle, but the model is unique. Lunar/astrological timing is definitely relevant to biology, tides, and weather -- as well as more subtle cycles.

_

It's a shame their oracles are all out of print at this time, as they are outstanding for artwork, depth, and intelligence.* Some publisher should bring all of them back into print for the market that can appreciate them. It's worth paying extra to find this one, or others. I would pay a little extra if any of their works were to be reprinted in good quality, as cards are less profitable than books and suffer the consequences. I hope someone publishes their Magical/Occult Tarot visible only on their Elemental Tarot website. [....]

I have seen two copies of The Moon Oracle in English. One is better printed than the other, with some variation in the colors of the card backs. It doesn't harm the deck as one to work with, but relevant to those who collect for aesthetic reasons.

'Mystic Meg Tarot' [or] Mystic Tarot Pack
Smith did the artwork for this set and the Major Arcana are excellent for their rich color, innovative take on traditional imagery, and her unmistakeable aesthetic. The book lacks the depth of the Smith-Astrop collaborations, and the minors are simple pips -- pixellated at that. It was once easily found quite cheap and the Majors are worth it if you appreciate Caroline Smith's artwork and would use the Majors (Courts and Aces) for reading or meditation or Wirth-style. Easiest to find in the UK.

Tarot collector & reader...
By A Customer
Although I'm usually skeptical about "new" and non-traditional Tarot/divination decks, I bought this one because the artwork is absolutely gorgeous. When I read the book & tried the deck, I was pleasantly surprised. 90% of the symbolism and representations are accurate, which is important is you plan to actually use the deck. A good set overall, but cards are best used doing readings for women.

Funny, awful, and absolutely fascinating!
By Aisling D.
This is non-stop fascinating reading and, frankly, hilarious... sometimes in an awful kind of way.

This book describes all kinds of delightful (and occasionally sad) British eccentrics. As an Anglophile, I thought I'd heard most of the wonderful stories of quirky Brits. To my surprise, almost every story in this book was completely new to me. Even the few I'd heard about... well, Ms. Caufield's research is impressive. She regales readers with truly obscure trivia, and presents it in an engaging writing style.

What I like best is how short each section is. At the end of the day, I can curl up with this book and read two or three sections when I climb into bed. It puts me in a happy, quirky frame of mind as I drift off to sleep.

If you're an Anglophile, this is a must-read. I have no idea how it took me this long to discover this book, but I'm really glad that I did.

Far More Than A Quiz Book!!!
By Dan Swan
This book has so much more information about "The Beatles" than any others I've read... including The "NEW" Anthology!!! The author is obviously an "EXPERT" in all that is "Beatles". I pride myself as quite the Beatles aficionado, but this book is so far beyond anything I can relate to, it's not even funny. The amount of work that went into the creation of this book is simply mind boggling. Every Beatles fan on the planet should own this book. If you "think" you "know" The Beatles; this book will challange you beyond your wildest dreams. By far the "Best" resource ever written on "The Fab Four". Thank You Mr. Hockinson; for a job well done. The "Ultimate" to say the least.

Review
"People who are into our music have mentioned to me that knowing we are Jewish has helped them feel more comfortable in their love of hip hop and sometimes even more comfortable and reassured in their own identity. If someone reads Jews Who Rock and feels empowered to make music or be creative because they identify with our being Jewish, that to me is a very positive thing." --Beastie Boy Mike D.

Introduction

The original inspiration for this book came when my friend Josh Richman gave me a book called Jews in Sports as a Hanukah gift. I instantly thought about all of the Jewish artists who were in rock, and knew how outstanding a book about them could be. I was born in Israel and moved to the United States when I was eight years old. I can still remember how excited I was when I learned that some of my favorite musicians were Jewish--it made me feel proud of my Judaic background and where I came from. There are a lot of kids out there who might feel alone because they're the only Jewish person in their school or community. Discovering that a favorite musician is Jewish might give them a reason to feel positive about their culture, religion, and themselves. I wrote this book to honor and celebrate these rockin' Jews . . . I give you Jews Who Rock.

The Beastie Boys

Born: Mike D: Born Michael Diamond, November 20, 1965-Upper West Side, NYC
MCA: Born Adam Yauch, August 5, 1967-Brooklyn Heights, NYC
Ad-Rock: Born Adam Horovitz, October 31, 1966-UpperWest Side, NYC
Talent: Rappers/songwriters/musicians

The Road to Fame: Middle class Jews Diamond and Yauch formed the original Beastie Boys as a hardcore punk band in 1981. Their drummer and guitarist left in 1983, just as Horovitz had folded his punk band, the Young and the Useless, to join the group and help them make their transition to rap, In 1984, the Beasties signed with Columbia's Def Jam Records and releasec Licensed to Ill, the best-selling rap album of the 1980s, two years later. After a dispute with their label in 1988, they signed with Capitol and were teamec with the Dust Brothers, acclaimed producers of cutting-edge music. Their groundbreaking follow-up, Paul's Boutique, failed commercially but earned them cult status. The underground fame soon paid off and the Beastiel them cult status. The underground fame soon paid off and the Beasties reemerged in the '90s with their own label, Grand Royal, and a series of best-selling albums.

The Music: Breakthrough Hit: "Fight for Your Right (To Party)" (1986)
Best-Selling LP: Licensed to III (1986)
Other Hit Singles: "Sabotage" (1994), "Sure Shot" (1994), "Intergalactic" (1997)

Did you Know?: The Beastie Boys opened for Madonna during her Like a Virgin Tour and were nearly booed off the stage for their comically profane stage antics.
Licensed to Ill was the fastest selling debut in Columbia Records history (750,000 copies in its first six weeks). It remains the Beasties's best-selling disc, with sales of over 8 million.
The Beasties were arrested, sued, and accused of inciting riots during their 1987 tour.
"Cookie Puss," their first underground hit single was based on a prank phone call the group made to a Carvel ice cream store.
Ad-Roc's father is New York playwright Israel Horovitz.
The band founded the Tibetan Freedom Concerts, a series of benefit shows that call attention to the persecution of the people in Tibet.

Bob Dylan

Born: Robert Alien Zimmerman,May24,1941-Duluth,MN
Talent: Singer/songwriter/guitarist

The Road to Fame: Following his graduation from the University of Minnesota in 1959, Zimmerman became a fixture at coffeehouses as a folk singer and dubbed himself Bob Dylan. Bob relocated to New York City in 1961 and garnered attention as an opening act for bluesman John Lee Hooker. Signing with Columbia, he put out an eponymous album that was comprised mostly of covers. It was after the 1962 release of his second album. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, that his legend was born. Folk acts such as Peter, Paul, & Mary and Joan Baez began to cover and popularize his songs. In 1965, Bob entered the rock-and-roll arena with the hit "Like a Rolling Stone," much to the chagrin of folk devotees. His songs continued to trumpet socialist and transcendental themes and to extol the use of certain drugs, as in "Rainy Day Women No. 12 and 35 (Everybody Must Get Stoned)." He toured and recorded tirelessly for the next thirty years, during which time he explored various religions outside of Judaism, to which he ultimately returned. In 1998, Bob won three Grammys for his 1997 release Time Out of Mind.

Bob on Judaism: "My so-called Jewish roots are in Egypt. They went down there with Joseph, and they came back with Moses, you know, the guy that killed the Egyptian, married an Ethiopian girl, and brought the law down from the mountain." -City Pages, 1983

The Music: Assorted Albums: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963), Highway 61 Revisited (1965), New Morning (1970), Blood on the Tracks (1975), Empire Burlesque (1985), Time Out of Mind (1997)

He was bar mitzvahed in 1954.
Bob was nearly booed off the stage at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 when he plugged in an electric guitar.
Bob was involved with the Lubavitch movement in Jerusalem in 1984.
He studied with a rabbi in New York during the early 1970s.

Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros

Born: Peretz Bernstein, March 29, 1959-Queens, NY
Talent; Singer/songwriter

The Road to Fame: After a brief career as a rock star-impersonating stripper in Newport Beach, California, Perry became the lead singer of the experimental rock band Psi Com. The band gained a loyal following, but fizzled out in 1985, about the time that Perry met bassist Eric Avery. The two began writing songs, and soon formed Jane's Addiction with drummer Stephen Perkins and guitarist Dave Navarro. The band's debut-a self-titled live album released by the L.A.-based indie Triple X-started a bidding war that landed them a deal with Wamer Brothers. Their proper studio debut,

Nothing's Shocking (1988), featured such underground classics as "Mountain Song" and "Jane Says." Their next album, Ritual de lo Habitual (1990), was a smash hit, due in part to the single "Been Caught Stealing," an MTV favorite. After the 1991 Lollapalooza tour, which Perry created, the band broke up. The following year. Perry and Steve went on to form Porno for Pyros, whose success nearly equaled that of their previous band. The Music: More of Perry's Hits: With Jane's Addiction: "Mountain Song"; With Porno for Pyros: "Freeway," "Hard Charger"

Did You Know?: Perry shared a house with college football players when he arrived in California.
The name "Jane's Addiction" refers to a junkie friend of Perry and Stephen who was also a prostitute.
Many stores refused to carry the album Nothing's Shocking because of the nude sculpture of Perry's girifriend that graced the cover. He created a papier-mache "three-way" for the cover of Ritual that forced Warner to issue a censored cover for sensitive retailers.
Perry was once arrested for singing nude onstage with Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction reunited in 1997, with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea standing in for Avery.

Joey Ramone of The Ramones Born: Jeffrey Hyman, May 19, 1952-Forest Hills, NY
Talent: Singer/songwriter

The Road to Fame: In 1974, Hyman became "Joey Ramone," drummer of the Ramones, a new punk-rock band whose members assumed the surname "Ramone," and dressed in leather and torn blue jeans. Joey switched to lead vocals shortly after the band began gigging in clubs with their trademark twenty-minute sets of two-minute songs. The Ramones' 1976 debut album quickly earned them cult status in the United States and Britain. Despite a few attempts to crossover into the pop charts in the early 1980s the Ramones maintained a consistent sound during their twenty-two-year existence. The 1996 Lollapalooza festival marked their last tour, after which Joey started a radio show, produced several bands, and began work on a collaborative recording project with singer Ronnie Spector of Ronettes fame for the indie-punk label Kill Rock Stars.

The Music: Suggested Listening: Ramones (1976), The Ramones Leave Home (1977), Road to Ruin (1978), End of the Century (1980), Loco Live (1991), Acid Eaters (1993)

Did You Know: The Ramones recorded their debut album for only $6000.
Joey and the band played major roles in Roger German's Rock 'n Roll High School (1979).
Road to Ruin was the first Ramones album to run over half an hour.
The legendary Phil Spector produced the Ramones' 1980 album, End of the Century.
In 1989, the Ramones wrote the theme song to the film adaptation of Stephen King's Pet Semetary.
The Ramones' appearance at the 1996 Lollapalooza was their farewell tour.

While studying at N.Y.U., Adam honed his comedy chops in clubs and at college campuses around the city. In 1995, two years after the release of his Grammy-nominated comedy album They're All Gonna Laugh at You!, which contained the hit single "Lunchlady Land," Adam left SNL to pursue a career in both stand-up comedy and movies.

A Good Idea, But Could Have Been Better
By Larry Mark MyJewishBooksDotCom
After reading a book about Jewish Sports Heroes (no it is not that slim), the Israeli born music exec and Madonna Maverick partner, Guy Oseary, got the idea to compile a book of 100 top Jewish rockers, or rockers with some Jewish parentage or heritage. The forward by Ben Stiller and the afterward by Perry (Peretz) Farrell (Bernstein) are interesting, and I wish the rest of the book followed their formats. Stiller talks of his Bar Mitzvah and how his band played at the after party. Stiller played on a drumset that he got for xmas (hmmm). They played "Hey Jude" (Jew'd). Farrell writes about the Biblical musicians, such as David. My complaint with this book is that it lists the artists, one per page, giving some bio info, such as birthdate, birthplace, and discography, but there are no interviews with the rockers. It left me hanging. I wondered, how is Warren Zevon Jewish? How did the Beastie Boys bnai Mitzvot affect their work? How did Saul Hudson go from Saul to Slash? I was hoping for something akin to the webzine PLOTZ, which actually interviewed Beck and other Jewish rockers about their Jewish heritages. But this book just lists some basic facts. I am sure it will make a good gift for other Jewish rockers and trivia specialists. It includes no brainers, like barry Manilow, Gene Simmons, Randy Newman, Mark Knopfler, Paul Simon, Lisa Loeb, Billy Joel, Dylan, Carole King, Kenny G (Gorelick), The Beastie Boys, and Phranc; but I wish it had given more data on Herb Alpert, Malcolm McLaren, and Zevon. The rockers out there will be excited to read about the Jewish members of The Doors, Foo Fighters, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Yo La Tengo, Matchbox 20, Elastica, Wang Chung, Blue Oyster Cult, Counting Crows, Janes Addiction, The Mamas and the Pappas, and Megadeth.

Not a Good Job; Some big Errors
By A Customer
I admit a certain potential conflict of interest. I run a web site that is largely devoted to the relation of Jewish people to popular culture.... When I heard this book was coming out--I looked forward to some new insights from an "insider." The book consists of one page profiles of "Jewish" performers. Each page consists of credits that could be found anywhere on the web. The biggest surprise to me was the listing of John and Michelle Phillips of, "The Mamas and the Papas", as Jewish. Mama Cass Elliott (born Ellen Cohen) was Jewish--this is well known. But the Phillips are not! How can I be sure? I am in contact with an author who is half way through a major book on the band. But this error seems typical of the tossed off quality of the book. Another Amazon reviewer noted that Robbie Robertson is listed and that he is half Native American and questioned whether he was "half" Jewish. He has, in fact, a Jewish father--but he is much closer to his Native roots. You would never find this out from the book. Also listed are a number of people who are "half" Jewish, but who were raised in another faith. There are so many Jewish rockers today who relate to their Jewishness in their work or lives. Many writers have written articles on this very subject. I hate to be mean--but it appears that this gentleman used his name and connections to put out a book that is little more than a list of "possibly" Jewish rockers. In some cases, he lists some Jewish members of a band (J. Geils band stands out)--and omits other Jewish members of the same band! Beyond everything else, if he blew it on the Phillips--how can we trust other stuff? The final weirdness is that he dedicates the book to his pal, Madonna--"the rockingest Jew I know." Well, Madonna has studied Jewish mysticism--but she is not Jewish by birth and a formal conversion has never been reported anywhere. But he calls her, "Jewish". Do you know something we don't? Care to share it with us?

Great Topic, Lazy Book
By A Customer
For those interested in all things Judaic and rock n' roll, "Jews who Rock" seemed like a most welcome book, but the actual product is purely tossed-off. Most of the inclusions are obvious, and despite a few surprises, highly dubious (Robbie Robertson, who has acknowledged his Native American roots through his music and in many interviews, is Jewish? And John Phillips? How?) Or simply untrue -- Lenny Kravitz may have a Jewish father, but he is an avowed Christian, and hence not a Jew who Rocks. Moreover, the "did you know" factoids are bland,oft-reported,and generally reveal nothing about the artist's relationship to Judaism. Why didn't Oseary bother to ask any of the artists about how they personally relate to Judaism, or how Judaism informs their music? Only Perry Farrell's typically cosmic, but reverant, essay suggests the book that might have been with greater research and insight. Hardly the definitive book on an otherwise fascinating subject.

"It Died Eight Times My Love. After that, Love Stays Dead.."
By R. M. Fisher
Tanith Lee once again proves herself a master of Young Adult fantasy with this wonderful (but apparently little known) story of the battle of the sexes. Set in a gloriously created world where women ride horned lions and rule over mankind, "East of Midnight" is a book that is easy to read, yet raises a range of questions on the differences between man and woman and the way in which we interact with each other.

At the beginning of the story, Lee herself writes where the inspiration for it came from: "Old legends have it, before men were kings, women ruled large areas of the world. They were as powerful and ruthless as any of the man-ruled states which came after. Indeed, the harshness of men towards women in many early societies was, they said, due to the cruelty the female societies - matriarchies - had already displayed toward men.

"And so what happens if a young man from a male-dominanted world gets thrown into a world of matriarchy? Fascinated by this thought, I set out to explore the whole thing in this novel."

Dekteon is a young runaway slave who is miraculously saved from his former master when he's transported into another world by the magician Zaister. But things are not quite as simple as that. Zaister is the husband and consort of King Izvire - the stunning woman who rules over a matriarchal city. Every five years she takes a new husband - because the former one must be sacrificed in order to ensure the natural balance of the world.

Zaister has long plotted his escape, and his rescue of Dekteon (who is his double in another world) was merely so the two could switch places. Now whilst Zaister finds that freedom in Dekteon's world is not all it's cracked up to be, Dekteon finds himself amongst the beauty of Zaister's world with only a month left to live before he's sacrificed.

But Dekteon does not have the same fear of women ingrained in him that the rest of the men of this world do, and begins a campaign against them that no once else would dare. Up against Izvire, his mother-in-law Kyrast and his daughter Vesain, Dekteon attempts to escape his death-sentence and stop the needless deaths of the king's consorts.

The story races along on every page, being continually colourful, fascinating, exciting and nerve-wracking as the countdown to Dekteon's death creeps closer. Lee not only vividly describes the matriarchal world where women are dominant and men subservient, but takes a deeper look at what makes these opposing genders tick. Far from taking the women's side, Lee portrays them as hard, merciless and sexist rulers, who nevertheless feel true remorse and loneliness when their husbands are killed. There are no true good-guys or bad-guys here.

The men Dekteon and Zaister are our main protagonists, and have very different views on women and how they are to be treated by them. Though by the end of the story Zaister gets away with far more than he rightfully deserves, together their attitudes form an insightful way of looking at the world and the roles of men and women.

"East of Midnight" is a rich, exciting, poignant read that deserves more recognition than it appears to have. With strong and realistic characters, a beautiful visual landscape and a problematic situation that can be overcome only by the two sexes working together, this is in every particular a great book.

Wonderful and brilliantly written
By Obsessed_With_Haku
'East of Midnight' is quite an underestimated book, but when I first saw it on my cousin's bookshelf I knew it was special. It presents concepts and ideas little thought of in any time or place, even fancifully, and in a manner which draws you in with the reality of it all. Beautifully contrived with a flowing plotline, 'East of Midnight' is a book you'll want to read from start to finish. I was, in fact, nearly run over by a car at the airport in a rather stupid attempt to cross the street with my head buried in the book. Be careful not to let this happen to you, as anyone who reads it is liable to fall under the book's woven word tapestry of a spell and do some fairly unintelligent things with their head stuck in the clouds. The concepts in the book are thoughtful and mature, but the book itself is an easy read. I recommend this book to anyone.

A young adults book
By Devon Bleak
I love this book, and have read it several times. It is about two worlds, one of them ours, in the days of slaves. The other a world where women are dominant. It flicks back and forth between the two. It was an incredible read, I thoroughly recommend reading it if you can get your hands on a copy. I think Tanith Lee is a great childrens writer.

All About All About Eve: The Complete Behind-the-Scenes Story of the Bitchiest Film Ever Made!, by Sam Staggs

To millions of fans, All About Eve represents all that's witty and wonderful in classic Hollywood movies. Its old-fashioned, larger-than-life stars--including Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, and Celeste Holm--found their best roles in Eve and its sophisticated dialogue has entered the lexicon.

But there's much more to know about All About Eve. Sam Staggs has written the definitive account of the making of this fascinating movie and its enormous incluence on both film and popular culture. Staggs reveals everything about the movie--from the famous European actress Margo Channing was based on to the hot-blooded romance on-set between Bette Davis and costar Gary Merrill, from the jump-start the movie gave Marilyn Monroe's career to the capstone it put on director Joseph L. Mankeiwicz's.

All About "All About Eve" is not only full of rich detail about the movie, the director, and the stars, but also about the audience who loved it when it came out and adore it to this day.

Amazon.com Review
Like the movie it celebrates, Sam Staggs's All About All About Eve is good, gossipy fun. The book is exhaustively researched, from behind-the-scenes anecdotes to a talk with the original, mysterious "Eve" who sparked the dinner party conversation that inspired the magazine story that eventually became one of the best movies ever made. The book spirals outward from the movie as well, chronicling the subsequent careers of the principals (and an ingenue newcomer named Marilyn Monroe), the life of writer-director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and even the ill-fated romance of stars Bette Davis and Gary Merrill. It is, of course, the legendary on-set cattiness that is the focus of the book's first half (Celeste Holm claims that Bette Davis responded to her initial "Good morning" with a tart "Oh shit, good manners," and the two never spoke again; cast members dish about George Sanders's then-wife Zsa Zsa Gabor), but the overall tone of the book is one of affection and a deep fascination for even the smallest aspects of the film. A true fan, Staggs analyzes the position of All About Eve in its own time and in the camp culture of today, notes its influence on innumerable subsequent films, and even chronicles the somewhat manufactured "feud" between Bette Davis and Tallulah Bankhead that developed over Davis's characterization of Margo Channing. To keep it from getting too weighty, Staggs punctuates the book with sidebars, paying tribute to the career of Walter Hampden, the elderly actor who presents the Sarah Siddons award, and even working in a match-the-famous-quote-to-the-French-subtitle quiz. All About All About Eve succeeds best in its main purpose--making you want to watch the movie one more time. --Ali Davis

From Publishers Weekly
"Fans.... They're juvenile delinquents, mental defectives. They never see a play or a movie--they're never indoors long enough!" exclaims Bette Davis's Margo Channing in the camp classic All About Eve. This seems especially ungrateful language given that uber-fan Staggs (MMII) has interviewed all of the surviving members of the cast and crew and compiled every possible fact, factoid and rumor about Joseph Mankiewicz's 1950s Oscar-winning tale of backstage back-stabbing in the Broadway theater. He details the evolution of the story, the filming, the stars' lives and the story's later incarnation as a Broadway musical. His book bears up under the weight of all this trivia not only because he has uncovered so much captivating material, but also because he uses it to illuminate larger themes. Staggs's comparison of similar dialogue from Eve and Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? illustrates the complexities of cultural influence, while his investigation of whether Tallulah Bankhead was the real-life model for Margo Channing becomes a meditation on the role of the bitch-goddess-diva in popular culture. Most startling of all, he has actually tracked down the young actress who was the model for the deviously ambitious Eve Harrington and tells her alarming, lamentable story. Written in a chatty style that can be laugh-out-loud-funny (actor Hugh Marlow is described as "one of those slow-burning, carbohydrate actors who all look like versions of Gregory Peck"), Stagg's engaging study should be the last word on this enduring classic. From Library Journal
The 1950 Oscar-winning film All About Eve, a movie about ambition and backbiting in the theater world, has become a critical and a cult classic. In this account of the movie, journalist and "filmlorist" Staggs (MM II) colors his treatment of the origins, influences, and spin-offs of the Bette Davis vehicle with fact, rumor, and all shades in between. The result is a truly comprehensive filmography (as in "biography")--with limited readership appeal. Most readers will lap up the off-screen anecdotes about the movie's stars and makers, but only diehard fans will appreciate Staggs's analysis of the film's homoerotic overtones, his itemization of production-related expenses, and his unconvincing comparisons to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Most compelling is Staggs's quest to track down the "real" Eve, the scheming ingenue who flatters, ingratiates, and eventually connives her way to the top. Superbly referenced, this is recommended for collections that emphasize popular culture.

Way too much about All About Eve
By John m Sugrue
One of the best films about Hollywood (okay, okay, it takes place in the theater, but look between the lines, people) gets the overblown treatment in this tell-all book. For every piece of very interesting information (Bankhead vs. Davis, Davis vs. Holmes, director vs. studio), there are pages and pages of information which, while key to the making of "AAE", read like the resumes of people who died two decades ago.
Still, "All About 'All About Eve'" still manages to pull out a few surprises. If you are a hopeless Margo Channing fan, buy and enjoy. Otherwise, visit your the local library and skim through the pages.

great dish
By bill katovsky
i came to the film late in my life, only last year, but the wait was worth it. all about eve made me mourn for a forgotten art form in cinema: sophisticated dialogue that packs an urbane wallop. the author matches the film with his passion and enthusiasm. great dish, great writing, great anecdotes. there should be another oscar category for books about hollywood. i nominate this gem; i only wish i could get my hands on mankiewicz's screenplay--perhaps a canny publisher will read this and take heed.

Review
"The range, sweep and sheer verve of the book are prodigious . . . a masterpiece."--A. N. Wilson

"With a superb history of a mammoth subject [James'] writing career has reached its apogee."--Andrew Roberts, The Times

"James never loses sight of his grand design, yet he stills finds room for the telling detail which illuminates and enriches a narrative."--Philip Zeigler, Daily Telegraph

"His feeling for historical detail cannot be faulted and is made more engaging by his scholarship and infectious enthusiasm for the subject . . . A thumping good read."--Trevor Royle, Scotland on Sunday

"James' epic is not only a first-rate narrative, but also a penetrating portrait of the British . . . Having largely, if often inadvertently, selfishly or ham-fistedly, engineered the world we live in, we need the courage now to face up to our record as cooly and intelligently as Lawrence James has done."--John Spurling, Times Literary Supplement

Scholarly, intriguing--although rudimentary--account
By J. Walker
A book with so ambitious a title as "The Rise and Fall of the British Empire" holds much promise for the reader. Visions of 1000+ page tomes come to mind. After all, there is a lot of time and history involved with so monumental a subject. But James' account of what was arguably the greatest cultural, economic, and social force the world has ever known--the British empire--delivers solidly on that promise with clarity and brevity.

I won't mince words. The book is short for so massive a subject. But James executes it well. Some passages and accounts are agonizingly brief, of course, but the purpose of the book is not to delve deeply into the minutiae of the Empire's history. It provides a fairly elementary overview of the important events that unfolded to shape the Empire, painting an elegant background picture of the sheer scope and impact of imperialism.

Yes, pivotal situations, political turmoil, and wars are often glossed over, replaced by "big picture" statements or sweeping extrapolations and conclusions. But this is not necessarily a bad thing. The book's focus is decidely on the causes and effects of various events, and their place in the vast course of history that the Empire occupied. Events are covered in enough detail to allow James to continue his "big picture" story, but not in enough to detail to satiate an interested scholar.

Thus, the book is a fantastic background for anybody who is either completely unversed in English imperial history, or for readers wanting solid background knowledge to accomodate further, more detailed readings. But, as a background, this book is incredibly detailed. The book's accounts span some 400 years of British history, in which the nation evolved from a fairly mediocre European island power into one of the most dynamic and influential economic and military machines that the world has ever known. The people, the events, and the stories that contributed to this rise to power are all brought to live with stunning truth through James' writing. The book is divided into clear, understandable chapters that are well-written and researched.

James does not force didactic revisionist theories on us. He presents a clear, eloquent, interesting, and objective account of the British Empire, and leaves the reader with a deep and poigant understanding of the implications of the Empire's history.

This is an absolute must for not only those new to British history, but for the learned scholar who seeks a well-rounded, intriguing look into the vast span of Britain's imperial history.

Lengthy but effective, unbiased work on the empire
By Daniel J. Hamlow
Lawrence James takes a straight factual narrative of the empire, neither going the neo-imperialist apologist route nor the leftist postmodernist road, equally emphasizing its achievements and darker moments. He does have an interesting style in introducing some of the chapters, and that is by describing the paintings that symbolized Britain at a certain point. He also uses poems, popular songs, and novels of the time to describe the sentiments at the time. At 629 pages, covering from 1600 up to 1993, it's quite a hefty read and may require a few sittings, but for a one volume work of the largest empire to last for a long time, it's effective.
James's focus is primarily economic and political, with the sociological aspects on the British left and anti-colonialists given quite coverage beginning in the 19th century. But the story's the same. England's empire was created for her need of goods from the New World, but really took off during its series of global wars against France and its allies beginning with the Nine Years War (1689-97) up to the American War For Independence (1775-1783). The reason was twofold, to prevent France from gaining a foothold in the New World and to outcompete France and Spain in its maritime trade network. And England won because of its banking system, which allowed for deficit spending, and its constitutional monarchy with Parliament having the powers of the purse, established with the Glorious Revolution that unseated James II.
The competition/antagonism with France over trade in Africa and India was refired in the 19th century, with Britain using its superior navy to establish its commercial hegemony. Yet there was another mission, and that was to civilize, to eliminate heathen practices (such as sati (widows immolating themselves on their late husband's pyre) in India, and introduce education and other British institutions in those faraway places. But that couldn't have been done with British work ethic, integrity, and a "dedication to the general welfare of mankind." Britain came out on top because of "native inventiveness and application of its people", "Britain's manufacturing industry", and "naval supremacy." Imperialism in itself is bad regardless of the country, as it leads to racism compared to the Germans and French, but the British were better than those countries given that they had a government that was the envy of all nations, although they retaliated in force only when attacked, e.g. Gordon, the Sepoy Uprising.
The rise of the leftist intellectuals who became more egalitarian and anti-imperialist couldn't have happened without the 1832 Parliamentary Reform Act, which gave the vote to the middle class, leading to a more democratic Britain. Many were Liberals or Radicals, and they contributed to the eventual fall of the Empire. Counter to that were the more conservative Tories, imperialists to the core, and who espoused jingoism, "a clamorous, pugnacious and intestinally inspired patriotism," something briefly resurrected during the Falklands War.
It was only when the empire was declining after the heavy loss of life in WW1, that the empire began to tighten its fist in a desperate attempt to cling onto its holdings. The massacre at Amristar (1919), the callous way it treated Middle Easterners, was the empire's dark side. This desperation can be seen with the establishment of Empire Day and the indoctrination of schoolchildren to look up to the empire, aided by pulp hero adventures by imperialist ex-war correspondent G.A. Henty, who cranked out imperialist propaganda to brainwash the youth. But being bankrupt by WW2, rising nationalist movements led by Gandhi, Nasser, and Nkrumah, and being dependent on US-influenced anti-colonialist foreign policy and aid, led to the empire's collapse into the Commonwealth, "a surrogate empire."
Each section is titled with start and end dates. However, in some sections, there are topics that cover the same time period, so although it looks like one is going into a time loop, keep in mind that many things were going on. For example, James covers the Irish situation from 1919-1939, and then in the next chapter, covers Egypt from 1919-1942, the Middle East during that same time period, and then India. Then he covers British social and economic dynamics in separate chapters.
Conclusion: "Few empires have equipped their subjects with the intellectial wherewithal to overthrow their rulers. None has been survived by so much affection and moral respect."

Well done, but whats the point?
By Matthew Mesick
James' history of the British Empire occupies a precarious position. It is too short to provide the sort of depth required by a scholarly history and his attempt to record the 400 year rise and fall of the Empire leaves little room for the sorts of anecdotes and character development one finds in the best popular histories. He does manage to give the reader a rough sketch of the history of the Empire. It covers the basics: where the British possessions were along with how and when they were acquired(and lost). But because of the massive scale of the Empire there is little room for much else. Large parts of this book read like a list, but when James quits listing events and analyzes them he is both enjoyable and informative. He also does an excellent job integrating popular culture into his text. He includes quotations from plays, poems, and advertisements. James' writing is clear, lucid and enjoyable to read. However I gave it three stars because the book lacks focus. It is nice to read a history in which the author attempts, and largely succeeds, in being unbiased but James' aloof stance from the history makes it quite bland. Another major weakness of the work is that while he provides an adequate explanation for why the British were so successful in building thier Empire(technology and naval power) he offers little insight into the far more interesting question, why the Empire fell apart. Maybe the answer to that question is too obvious, but if it is he should have at least given a paragraph explaining it to dolts like me who read his book. He mentions several times that the fall was inevitable, and hints that it was the exposure to the British traditions of liberty and self-government that led to the fall, but he really skirts the issue of. Other helpful additions would have been a timeline and a biographical index of major figures. The book is well researched and provides a lot of information, but seems a bit pointless. I recommend it for someone wanting to know the basics about the Empire, but for anyone with more than an elementary understanding of the Empire it will not suffice.
