We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families: Stories from Rwanda, by Philip Gourevitch

An unforgettable firsthand account of a people's response to genocide and what it tells us about humanity.

This remarkable debut book chronicles what has happened in Rwanda and neighboring states since 1994, when the Rwandan government called on everyone in the Hutu majority to murder everyone in the Tutsi minority. Though the killing was low-tech--largely by machete--it was carried out at shocking speed: some 800,000 people were exterminated in a hundred days. A Tutsi pastor, in a letter to his church president, a Hutu, used the chilling phrase that gives Philip Gourevitch his title.

With keen dramatic intensity, Gourevitch frames the genesis and horror of Rwanda's "genocidal logic" in the anguish of its aftermath: the mass displacements, the temptations of revenge and the quest for justice, the impossibly crowded prisons and refugee camps. Through intimate portraits of Rwandans in all walks of life, he focuses on the psychological and political challenges of survival and on how the new leaders of postcolonial Africa went to war in the Congo when resurgent genocidal forces threatened to overrun central Africa.

Can a country composed largely of perpetrators and victims create a cohesive national society? This moving contribution to the literature of witness tells us much about the struggle everywhere to forge sane, habitable political orders, and about the stubbornness of the human spirit in a world of extremity.

Amazon.com Review
"Hutus kill Tutsis, then Tutsis kill Hutus--if that's really all there is to it, then no wonder we can't be bothered with it," Philip Gourevitch writes, imagining the response of somebody in a country far from the ethnic strife and mass killings of Rwanda. But the situation is not so simple, and in this complex and wrenching book, he explains why the Rwandan genocide should not be written off as just another tribal dispute.

The "stories" in this book's subtitle are both the author's, as he repeatedly visits this tiny country in an attempt to make sense of what has happened, and those of the people he interviews. These include a Tutsi doctor who has seen much of her family killed over decades of Tutsi oppression, a Schindleresque hotel manager who hid hundreds of refugees from certain death, and a Rwandan bishop who has been accused of supporting the slaughter of Tutsi schoolchildren, and can only answer these charges by saying, "What could I do?" Gourevitch, a staff writer for the New Yorker, describes Rwanda's history with remarkable clarity and documents the experience of tragedy with a sober grace. The reader will ask along with the author: Why does this happen? And why don't we bother to stop it? --Maria Dolan

From Publishers Weekly
What courage must it have required to research and write this book? And who will read such a ghastly chronicle? Gourevitch, who reported from Rwanda for the New Yorker, faces these questions up front: "The best reason I have come up with for looking more closely into Rwanda's stories is that ignoring them makes me even more uncomfortable about existence and my place in it." The stories are unrelentingly horrifying and filled with "the idiocy, the waste, the sheer wrongness" of one group of Rwandans (Hutus) methodically exterminating another (Tutsis). With 800,000 people killed in 100 days, Gourevitch found many numbed Rwandans who had lost whole families to the machete. He discovered a few admirable characters, including hotelier Paul Rusesabagina, who, "armed with nothing but a liquor cabinet, a phone line, an internationally famous address, and his spirit of resistance," managed to save refugees in his Hotel des Milles Collines in Kigali. General Paul Kagame, one of Gourevitch's main sources in the new government, offers another bleak and consistent voice of truth. But failure is everywhere. Gourevitch excoriates the French for supporting the Hutus for essentially racist reasons; the international relief agencies, which he characterizes as largely devoid of moral courage; and the surrounding countries that preyed on the millions of refugees?many fleeing the consequences of their part in the killings. As the Rwandans try to rebuild their lives while awaiting the slow-moving justice system, the careful yet passionate advocacy of reporters like Gourevitch serves to remind both Rwandans and others that genocide occurred in this decade while the world looked on.

From Library Journal
In 1994, the world was informed of the inexplicable mass killings in Rwanda, in which over 800,000 were killed in 100 days. Gourevitch, a staff writer for The New Yorker, spent over three years putting together an oral history of the mass killing that occurred in this small country. He interviewed the survivors, who told him their horror stories of violence. Most of the killings were done with a machete. Friends killed friends, teachers killed students, and professional workers killed co-workers. The United Nations was slow in reacting to this crisis and refused to classify the incident as genocide. The title of this book comes from a Tutsi pastor's letter to his church president, a Hutu. While this is a powerful book, it sometimes bogs down in the details of Rwandan politics. It is doubtful the average reader will want to pick it up, but the history of this genocide must be told. This book should find itself on the shelves of academic libraries where African history collections are strong.

Amazing Mix of History and Oral Story Telling
By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
In 350 fast-paced pages, Gourevitch explores the painful riddle of human evil, the kind that becomes sanctioned by the leaders so that is tragically becomes embraced by every day "normal" people. He doesn't have any easy answers but he does probe brilliantly into possible causes of the genocide that hit Rwanda in April 1994. Using the oral history of many eye witnesses, Gourevitch weaves story telling and history, especially the role of the Belgians in dividing and conquering by giving special privileges to the Tutsis, resulting in incredible resentment in the hearts of the Hutus who are 85% of Rwanda's population.

There are compelling anecdotes and news stories covered here that as amazing and shocking as they are were never covered in the American press. This alone makes the book valuable. For example, he shows the alleged role of a naturalized American citizen, a minister from Rwanda, who used his religious authority to snare hundreds of Tutsis in his church before they were killed. We learn of this minister's guilty conscience and the FBI's pursuit of him in Texas and Mexico. There are scenarios covered in this book that could make a movie.

Ultimately what ties this book together, a lucid narrative of human evil and the history of political exploitation, is Gourevitch's refusal to surrender to despair and nihilism. He keeps his hope in our humanity by remembering that Hutu girls in a Catholic school would not separate themselves from the Tutsi girls when the Hutu killers demanded they be separated before a killing. The Hutu girls saw themselves as humans first, and if the killers were going to slaughter it would have to be all the girls, which, sadly, is what happened. This act of courage on the part of the Hutu girls provides a burning torch of hope for Gourevitch who writes about this tragic part of history with great humanity.

Ominous Title, Important Subject, Excellent Book
By Little Me
You will have a remarkably better understanding of the Rwandan genocide after you read this book. Gourevitch has done humanity a great service with this fine piece of investigative journalism. The book could have been called "The Slaughter: 100 Days of Hutu Power", but it goes beyond the killing. It successfully puts the puzzle together by looking at the ignition points, outlining the historical context of Rwandan society, debunking the misconceptions, and fingering the enablers. The book also explains various mopping-up efforts and events in the aftermath of genocide, and illuminates the subsequent (and still significant) situation across the border in the eastern Congo.

The abatement of genocide, its causes and consequences, and finding justice afterwards continues to humble the better angels of humankind. Like Bosnia and Darfur, Rwanda illustrates the abysmal results of misguided policies and half-hearted efforts put forth by powerful nations (like the US and France) and international organizations (like the UN). The subject is enormous and will probably surface again in our ever more crowded and cranky world. If we could only nip it in the bud. If not, we will ultimately come face to face with the gruesome monster again.

Stories of a real horror we should all know and remember
By Craig Matteson
I have various views of this book. First, it is a very important account of one of the great tragedies of our time. It upsets me that we still only speak of this tragedy without enough specificity. It is too often just a conversation about the million killed in Rwanda without enough focus on who did the killing. It wasn't just a tribe against another. It was people hacking others to death. This book gets us to some of those individuals - both those murdered and those murdering - and that is the chief reason to appreciate the book and thank Mr. Gourevitch for it.
However, I wish there some images in the book beyond the couple of maps. Yes, Mr. Gourevitch is a fine writer and helps us see with words. But this kind of genocide cries out for photographic documentation. Maybe there isn't any that is appropriate for the book. But I feel the lack just the same.
Finally, this is an important document of the Rwandan terror, but it isn't the final story. It isn't the complete story. That has yet to be written. But I found reading this book a strange sort of nightmare. Everything seems real and it has its own frightening impetus, but it is like a dream where you want things to stop but it won't. It is horrifying and even worse because it all happened to real people and in our time.
And notice how everyone runs from accountability. It seems like everyone wants to pretend someone else did it and when you find someone who actually can't run away from involvement they want to pretend it was some awful force that made people unavoidably crazy and should therefore be forgotten. What hogwash.
Thanks to Mr. Gourevitch for getting these stories in print for us. I hope we burn these stories in our memory.

The Political Economy of GlobalizationFrom Palgrave Macmillan

The Political Economy of Globalization brings together original chapters by leading authorities to provide much-needed evidence and analysis in relation to a highly contentious phenomenon and concept. The book shows how investment patterns are being transformed, a global civil society is emerging, and governments are losing control of national currencies. However, it also makes it clear that globalization does not prohibit strong governments from maintaining a welfare state and good working conditions and how they can cooperate to manage the flow of goods, money, people, and problems across borders.

Another top hit by this renowned Oxford academic
By Maurizio Giuliano
Once more, Ngaire Woods has been able to collect top-quality essays by world-known colleagues, editing them with superb mustery, to put them in this book, a masterpiece within the subject of international relations. The book explores a number of issues within the vast field of globalization. The chapters do this from the point of view of the process' political economy, but also from a theoretical point of view. The authors' views come across in the chapters, but with superb substantiation for these views, and carefully considering others without always recurring to counter-factual arguments. All the chapters are easy-to-read, not heavy reading at all, written in a vivid style and captivating. All in all, a must for those studying the subject, and great reading.

The Hiawatha: A Novel, by David Treuer

Recently widowed, and encouraged by government relocation schemes to move Native Americans off their reservations, Betty takes her four young children from their Ojibwe roots to make a new life in Minneapolis. Her younger son Lester finds romance on the soon-to-be-demolished train, The Hiawatha, while his older brother Simon takes a dangerous job scaling skyscrapers. Their fates collide, and result in a tale of crime, punishment, and redemption.

An elegy to the American dream, and to the sometimes tragic experience of the Native Americans who helped to build it, The Hiawatha is a powerful novel that confirms David Treuer's status as a young writer of rare talent.

Amazon.com Review
There are countless reasons why families fall apart. Fratricide, the tragic incident at the center of David Treuer's second novel, The Hiawatha, is surely one of the most agonizing. "A good job, close friends, quiet nights"--all this and more seem to beckon to Ojibwe matriarch Betty in 1961 when she uproots herself and her four children from their upstate reservation and moves the family to the inner-city promise of Minneapolis. Only when her younger son is killed by his own brother are Betty's long-decaying dreams of a better life finally extinguished, exposing not only the dark side of pursuing the American Dream, but the convoluted trails of love.

Simon, Betty's oldest child, seems doomed to misfortune, frustration, and resentment. After witnessing his father's accidental death, he feels obligated to act as family savior and protector, especially once they move to the city. His best intentions aren't enough, however, and the family eventually unravels, their devastation complete after Simon's almost inexplicable, alcohol-fueled murder of his brother. Much of the novel traces the aftermath, as Simon and Betty attempt a delicate healing, their lives muddled with both affection and remorse.

Treuer is at his best when penetrating the silent emotions of confused souls and the failed promises of human hearts. And although his observations tend to be cynical and overly broad, somewhat falsely self-assured, his knowledge of the worlds of both city and reservation is remarkably precise. In a book that can be unnecessarily gruff, Treuer exposes plainly not only the persistence of tragedy, but also the tenacity of family love. --Ben Guterson

From Publishers Weekly
Life delivers a relentless series of devastating blows to three generations of a Native American family in this heartbreaking and harrowing second novel by the author of the praised Little. The story opens when Simon is released from prison, after serving a 10-year sentence for killing his brother Lester in a drunken rage. Simon comes home to South Minneapolis to see his mother, Betty, whose grief and isolation are compounded by bitter memories of her first disastrous loss, her woodsman husband's death in a tree-felling accident. Married at 16, Betty is still in her 20s when Jacob dies, left with four children to support. Simon, who witnessed his father's gruesome death, prematurely becomes the man of the house, getting construction work high above the city. The narrative crosscuts feverishly back and forth in time, each piece of painful family history emerging to clarify previously murky allusions. Treuer gingerly explores Lester's romance with Vera, a white girl, as they find a haven of intimacy in an abandoned wreck of an old train. At Lester's death Vera is pregnant, and she eventually leaves her infant son, Lincoln, with Betty. The uneasy reunion of Lincoln (who is unaware that his uncle killed his father), Betty and the guilt-ridden Simon is edged with fear and suspicion, but by the end of the novel, this turmoil mutates into a ravaging new cycle of despair and destruction. Treuer's powerful, disturbing portrait of one Ojibwe family's struggle with poverty, violence and racism is conveyed in terse prose of driving urgency. Their bleak circumstances render Betty catatonically docile and Simon prey to hair-trigger episodes of violence; neither can cope with the odds of life stacked against them. An assortment of supporting characters are memorable and lighten the protagonists' tragic load. Bluntly effective dialogue lays bare the tough heart of Treuer's brutally compelling saga. Author tour.

From Kirkus Reviews
A new voice in the Native American literary landscape, Treuer (Little, 1995) returns with a numbingly sorrowful tale of a fratricide that triggered a chain of events and devastated an Indian family already reeling from the accidental death of the boys' father. Having served ten years for killing his brother Lester, Simon comes back to the decayed Minneapolis neighborhood where he did the deed, and where his mother Betty now gives him less than a warm welcome. In time, Simon learns many things that fill in the gap left by his years away: that one of his sisters died and the other moved far away, never to be heard from; that Lester left a son, Lincoln, whose 16-year-old mother abandoned him in Betty's arms just after his birth; that Betty never told the boy about his uncle or why he went to prison; that Lincoln's mother is still in the city, not far away. A job in Simon's former profession, building the steel frames of the city's skyscrapers, is out of the question, yet he ekes out a living for a while, until he kills a goose for food, only to be arrested and jailed for it. When he gets out, Betty and Lincoln are gone to the reservation and the house they lived in is being demolished. So he goes there also, where a bit of illegal fishing and an escape from the fish-and-game folks get him lost in the woods with a broken leg. He hobbles back to the city and miraculously winds up with a decent place to live, a job, and a girlfriendbut Lincoln finally learns what his uncle did to his father and comes looking for Simon, setting in motion a last round of tragic mistakes. Motivation for the initial murder is left murky to a frustrating degree, but, overall, this is a story lyrical in its sadness, one demonstrating that most precious and rare of writerly gifts: the ability to reach equally well into both the heart and mind of the reader. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. A gusty and profoundly moving book
By Lisa Schweitzer
Other reviewers have touched on the way the book describes the hardscrabble Minneapolis slums; suffice it for me to say Treuer uses his obvious talent very, very well here. He knows what he is writing about, and he writes about it extremely well.
The realism of the writing does not take away from the wonderful storytelling in this novel. Treuer's choice--fratricide--is gutsy and engaging, and his characters are believable and decent.
Death pervades the book; the deaths of Simon's father, his brother, even that of a goose force the reader to see how close to death of us live all the time. Even Simon's job is brutally dangerous. Even though death is everywhere, Treuer's writing is brilliantly alive: his descriptions defy any characterization that I could try to use for them--they are just that good, from the beginning of the book to the end.
Perhaps the moving interesting and moving character for me is Betty, Simon's mother. Her love for the people around her is so hopeless and deep that my heart clenches even now to think of her with a dead husband, one son dead, and another a murderer. The quintessential survivor, she works, scrapes by, and tolerates a scumbag landlord for the sake of children she knows have very little chance in the world. But she gives them what chances she can, by hook or by crook, via the bridge of her back. No wonder she habitually rebuffs the tender affections of a decent man.
I am afraid I haven't done justice to this book; it is a terrific novel by a true talent. The other book of his that I have read, _Little_, is another emotionally evocative work that I cannot recommend highly enough.

Tueuer opens the doors to Native American Twin Cities
By Janet W. Coy
Please read this book. David Treuer opens a window to a rarely noticed aspect of American Life, the crises of Native Americans in Urban USA.

As an observer of the relationships between the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Native Americans whose welfare they were created to protect (at least on paper) I am grateful for Mr. Treuer's story of the impact on individuals of the BIA's "Relocation Project" of the 1950's and 1960's. The ethnic cleansing efforts of the settlement period and the Indian Wars were closely followed by the long reservation tortures that included, starvation, lousy health care and the removal of children from their families during the boarding school years. Boarding school children in many institutions were not allowed to see their families, experience family life, speak their language or participate in the rites of their religion and culture. Generations of Native American children in those institutions were physically and verbally abused, demoralized, then returned to reservations. Most survived but only the strongest thrived.

The last forced boarding school children in our area were of my parents' generation. I knew many of the tough and outstandingly intelligent ones who managed to thrive, but only a few who thrived without assimilating into white communities. In my generation--I went to college in the 60's--relocation and a thoroughly unhealthy Indian Health Service were the primary forms of ethnic cleansing. Native Americans were dumped without adequate training and support into areas of substandard housing in out cities and expected to fend for themselves. On the reservations BIA Health Services provided health care laced with distaste and bad practice. Again only the very intelligent and strongest individuals survived and thrived.

Perhaps, since the BIA's mismanagement of Native American properties and accounts has been acknowledged there has been some reform, but the state of BIA schools on reservations certainly indicates that if the starvation of bodies is no longer the goal of the BIA hierarchy, the starvation of the minds and souls of Native American children remains an important goal of our federal government.

Treuer tells is like it is for many Urban Native Americans. They don't need to read this book to understand. Those of us who live prejudice free as part of the majority white society do need to think of the impact that the programs of our dominant society have on those who are visibly different.

A Look Into A Culture That Few Americans Have Seen
By A Customer
David Treuer's hand paints a landscape that is as bleak a reality as we have here in America. His characters that inhabit this modern Native American tale are so real you can see them clearly in your mind's eye. In 1969, I passed through many towns in Southern Canada bordering on the Great Lakes States and was shocked to see the level of disfunction in our Native American brothers and sisters. This novel reminded me deeply of my memories of these places and how forgotten and isolated these people are and what the result is of this abandonment. For a first novel, I think we have a lot more to look forward to from this young, and, very gifted writer.

Ethnic Conflict in India: A Case-Study of Punjab, by NA NA

Is India unique in politically managing ethnic conflicts? This book evaluates critically the conventional wisdom which argues that it is. By focusing on India's nation and state-building in the peripheral regions since 1947 and contemporary developments, it suggests that India should be considered as a form of ethnic democracy. Within India's ethnic democracy, hegemonic and violent control is exercised over minorities, especially religious communities constituting majorities in the federating units. A detailed case-study is provided of the management of the 'Punjab proble' - the growth and containment of Sikh ethno-nationalism and, after 1984, the suppression of the separatist movement for Khalistan, a Sikh state. The long-term development of ethno-nationalist separatist movements, the book argues, is inextricably linked to the future character of Indian democracy. This is assessed in light of the challenge posed by the rise of Hindutva forces, the demise of Nehruvianism, and the internal political and economic pressures towards regionalization.

Don't do business with superbookdeals
By G. Michael Shaskey
I eventually got the book from another source. SBD sent me the wrong book and endeavouring to have my original order fulfilled has revealed an interesting problem of systemic service-blindness. Amazon is not interested; Professor Jean Woodall (the only surviving editor of the book) is not interested; SBD is not interested and Palgrave doesn't appear to be interested either. Read on ...

The book I received from SBD in satisfaction of my order is 'Education in Britain 1750 - 1914' by WB Stephens. I contacted SBD by email but only received a no reply email from them in response, inviting me to log on to another of their websites to advise them of my problem. I tried unsuccessfully to do this. My attempt was unsuccessful because I could not supply a ZIP code in the login screen. Whilst we have adopted many of the nuttier excesses of American life here in New Zealand, I doubt we will ever adopt American ZIP codes for New Zealand postal zones.

I phoned SBD and made an interesting discovery in my conversation with the operator I spoke with. In a conversation worthy of an exasperated Victor Meldrew, the operator and I discovered that Palgrave, the publisher of both Ethical Issues in Contemporary HRM and WB Stephens' worthy history had, in fact, allocated the same ISBN to both books.

I found this a bit difficult to believe so checked the documentation available for Ethical Issues in Contemporary HRM on the Amazon site. Sure enough, when I went to the entry for this book and clicked on the 'Look Inside' button, there it was on the inside page. The ISBN is given as 0-333-73966-3 in the publication details for Ethical Issues in Contemporary HRM. The ISBN printed on the WB Stephens digital reprint sitting unwanted on my desk as I write this is 0-333-73966-3. If you check the information available online at Amazon, you will be able to confirm my discovery. I offerred to scan the back of the Stephens book and send it to everyone I have written to about my problem, in order to verify my claim, but after a month nobody has taken me up.

It seems that Palgrave is responsible for my problem, but they are uncontactable, being insulated from the consequences of the mayhem they have created by the same service blind technology I complained of above. I feel constrained not to threaten their local representative to rescind my orders for all Palgrave titles I have prescribed for next semester over what is essentially a personal inconvenience, but I am tempted.

SBD will refund the purchase price if they receive it back within one month of the despatch date. As the book was despatched on 2 June 2011, and took the better part of 3 weeks to reach me in New Zealand, I was not optimistic about getting it back to them by 2 July. Furthermore, I feel I should not be bound to a returns policy when the item I would be returning had never been the object of my order. Sadly, it seems unlikely that I will ever have the opportunity to share this elegant argument with SBD as their front line personnel do not seem to be empowered to optimise what Americans refer to as 'the customer experience' and contacting a decision-maker by telephone is beyond my financial resources; the rates for phone calls between NZ and the USA being only slightly lower than I imagine calls between this life and the hereafter will be when technology finally cracks that one. I did not order the WB Stephens book and, other than starting another career as an education academic, I fear I will never have any use for WB Stephens' work. Whilst I must agree that SDB's blame is slight compared with Palgrave's, they should have processes to ensure that the right book has been sent as the title and author are far more visible than the ISBN and I am sure a darn site more reliable than the ISBN which is much easier to misread or record incorrectly than the title and author. But the fundamental problem is Palgrave's error in recycling an ISBN.

Amazon.com Review
For the 2 million parents of girls who play intramural sports, the comment, "you play like a girl," is considered a compliment. Games Girls Play, written by sports psychologist and former figure skater Caroline Silby with ESPN reporter Shelley Smith, moves beyond the widely reported benefits of sports for young women--offering both parents and coaches a fresh, smart guide for responding to the needs of the young female athlete. Whether they are writing about choosing a sport, building confidence, staying calm during a competition, or debriefing after the game, the authors have created a powerful primer on the inner work of sports psychology. As they explain, "teaching athletes to use their thoughts, perceptions, images and body language, focus and effort to move ahead are the life lessons of sports."

Drawing examples from case studies, the approach is highly practical and each chapter has bulleted strategies, checklists, summaries, and quick pointed questions (What if the coach plays favorites? Should I watch practice? How can I help her balance school and sports?) Yet the most probing questions are directed to parents, asking, for example: Can you accept that your daughter will disappoint you? Can you settle for personal improvement rather than winning? Other insightful chapters focus on a variety of subjects including coaching the coach, bad sport parents, and coping with crunch times, as well as the darker side of female sports---eating disorders, harassment, and steroid use. Each chapter offers rich resources for guiding a young woman to strengthen her body and mind and to transfer the lessons of sports to the rest of her life. --Barbara Mackoff

From Library Journal
Practicing sports psychologist Silby, who serves on the United States Olympic Committee, and ESPN journalist Smith direct this book toward the parents of teenage girls who, although sharing many sports issues with boys, also have specific concerns, such as decreasing assertiveness and ambivalence over physical maturation. Silby discusses many topics (e.g., What if a coach plays favorites? ) and portrays many of her case studies, complete with dialog. The authors devote much attention to helping the young female athlete differentiate between what can and can!t be controlled and provide mental exercises (e.g., self-talk, reframing, and imagery) to help her performance. Though somewhat academic in tone, the book provides advice that will help parents and girls benefit from sports in the ways espoused by Jean Zimmerman and Gil Reavill!s Raising Our Athletic Daughters (LJ 11/1/98). A good addition for large public libraries."Kathy Ruffle, Coll. of New Caledonia Lib., Prince George, BC
Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Silby, a sports psychologist, and Smith, a journalist and reporter for ESPN, approach all the issues of youth sports participation from the perspective of the female athlete. Some issues are the same as those for male athletes: parents need to support, not pressure; parents should be aware of who's coaching and his/her qualifications; and sports should be part of a well-balanced set of activities. There are some issues unique to young female athletes, such as delayed onset of menstruation and increased vulnerability to eating disorders. The authors also provide a number of techniques for improving performance, such as getting positive feedback and developing focus. There are numerous books directed at parents of young athletes, and although this covers familiar topics, the emphasis on female athletic issues makes it a solid addition to most collections. Excellent book for Coaches and Parents of Female athletes
By P. Wung
I have coached club volleyball for six years and have been a club director for three years, a lot of the lessons that Dr. Silby presents are pretty lessons that I have learned over the years through sheer hard lessons. I wish that I had this book to reference when I first started to coach young women.
Dr. Silby's book has been less a revelation but a reinforcement of what I had learned these last few years. This is not to say that I learned nothing from the book, on the contrary, I feel like I have gained important nuanceson communicating with young women and allowing them to tell me how I can help them get better and stronger both physically and mentally. An invaluable book indeed.
The only slight problem is that the book is geared toward the coaches of both individual sports and team sports, so not all the lessons are applicable completely.
I would recommend this book for anyone who coach, or are looking to coach. The lessons embodied in the book will make the road to success in coaching much smoother.

This book is truly excellent!
By Lisa Herrick
This book is the best I've ever read on the subject of young female athletes; Silby and Smith have a complete understanding of the challenges faced by girls who are involved in athletics, and the book gives example after example of how a young female athlete can cope with various critical issues. As the step-father of a female high-school athlete whose team won the Maryland soccer championship, I can attest to how valuable the book has been to her.
Silby knows her stuff, and Smith's prose is clear, concise, and always on the mark. Interestingly, Smith is also the co-author of the book, "Just Give me the Damn Ball," written with football-star Keyshawn Johnson.
If you've got a daughter involved in athletics, this is the book for her (and you'll find it useful, too). I can't recommend the book more highly--it's great.

Excellent coverage of many important issues.
By A Customer
As a father of 10-year-old and 6-year-old multi-sport female athletes (and their 4-year-old sister fast on their heels), and a coach of my girls' soccer and softball teams, I feel relieved that someone with the personal experience of having been an athlete and now working with athletes took the time to share their experiences and advice. Since my daughters also all figure skate, the personal experiences of the author's skating career are particularly insightful. Dr. Silby does an excellent job covering a wide range of topics and providing poignant positive examples for parents and coaches to use to better enjoy and improve their athlete's trying, joyous, frustrating, and fulfilling young lives. Thanks, Dr. Silby!!

Victoria's Daughters, by Jerrold M. Packard

Five women who shared one of the most extraordinary and privileged sisterhoods of all time...

Vicky, Alice, Helena, Louise, and Beatrice were historically unique sisters, born to a sovereign who ruled over a quarter of the earth's people and who gave her name to an era: Queen Victoria. Two of these princesses would themselves produce children of immense consequence. All five would face the social restrictions and familial machinations borne by ninetheenth-century women of far less exalted class.

Researched at the houses and palaces of its five subjects-- in London, Scotland, Berlin, Darmstadt, and Ottawa-- Victoria's Daughters examines a generation of royal women who were dominated by their mother, married off as much for political advantage as for love, and passed over entirely when their brother Bertie ascended to the throne. Packard, an experienced biographer whose last book chronicled Victoria's final days, provides valuable insights into their complex, oft-tragic lives as scions of Europe's most influential dynasty, and daughters of their own very troubled times.

Amazon.com Review
Incisive character studies of Queen Victoria's five daughters provide the framework for a lively survey of 19th-century European history. With three brothers securing the English throne, the princesses' royal duty was to further Britain's interests through marriage. Vivacious, intelligent Vicky (1840-1901), the spoiled eldest, had a happy union with Hohenzollern prince Frederick William, though her liberal views were unpopular in Prussia and vehemently resisted by her son Willy, who eventually became the emperor of Germany. Sensitive, altruistic Alice (1843-78); dutiful, dull Lenchen (1846-1923); and shy baby sister Beatrice (1857-1944) all married minor German royalty--though Beatrice, intended to be her domineering mother's spinster companion, didn't marry until she was 28 and continued to live in England at Victoria's beck and call. Centuries-old custom dictated that princesses must not wed subjects, but artistic, rebellious Louise (1848-1939) married a Scottish nobleman anyway and managed to lead a slightly less restricted life than her sisters, particularly as a strong supporter of charitable organizations for women. Jerrold Packard, a veteran historian-biographer with six previous books to his credit, spins an enjoyably old-fashioned narrative emphasizing personal relationships among Europe's royalty and their impact on political developments. --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had nine children?five of them daughters?and 40 grandchildren. In this engaging group biography, Packard (Farewell in Splendor) writes about scores of lives and several generations of this fecund couple's progeny?which is why the book is best devoured in small bites and why the comprehensive list of "Principal Characters" is indispensable. As a family, the V&As make for a story as dramatic as any fictional saga, but Packard also shows real sympathy and affection for these royal individuals, including the vastly complicated Queen Victoria herself. Packard combed the daily correspondence the sovereign required of her eldest daughter, Vicky, as well as letters, journals, memoirs and biographies of the other principals involved. In addition, his loving (or disparaging) descriptions of the five daughters' residences in London, Argyll, Berlin, Darmstadt and Ottowa reflect his eager research. History was no mere backdrop to these lives: Vicky's eldest child, Willy, grew up to become Kaiser Wilhelm II, to her great despair, and Alice's daughter Alexandra married Tsar Nicholas II. Packard's narrative is accessible, unpretentious and solidly written (except for one particularly bad pun on a widow's peak). He manages to treat historical events succinctly while emphasizing the princesses' individual lives and family relationships, their talents in music and art, their patronage of schools and hospitals and their pioneering advocacy of women's education and employment.

A gem of a book that transports the reader back in time!
By A Customer
As a passionate "devourer" of all books pertaining to European history, I had very high expectations of this work before actually picking it up. Was I ever surprised! Not only did it meet my expectations, but surpassed them by far! Thoroughly researched, Packard offers for the most part, a sympathetic view of his subjects; however, he does balance things out by touching on their less stellar qualities, as well. I became more emotionally caught up with each of Victoria's daughters, in turn, as well as with Victoria herself, than I ever thought I possibly could, since I usually tend to view Britain's royal family with a critical eye. Packard really made me feel with the family's triumphs and tragedies and I came away from this reading experience with a greater appreciation of just how much more difficult life was in the 19th century than it is today. Packard also illustrated that even royalty is not immune to life's disappointments. For instance, while I tended to be impatient with eldest daughter, Vicky's, lack of understanding about Prussian life and customs, and her arrogance in thinking that the British way could quite easily be forced down the throats of Europe's other countries, I did pity her frustration at the disintegrated relationship with primarily her 2 eldest children. Many of the dysfunctions that existed in Victoria's immediate family have managed to stay with the family through the present generation, which explains a lot about the present-day group. I highly recommend this book for afficianados of European history. The moment you crack the cover, you won't be able to put it down until you read the very last word!

Fascinating study of Queen Victoria's legacy.
By mirope
When most of us think of the daughter's of Queen Victoria, we think of the tragedy wrought throughout the royal families of Europe by the hemophiliac gene passed by the queen's female descendents. "Victoria's Daughters" amply proves that there is much more to learn about these 5 fascinating and very different women. Jerrold Packard explores their lives from cradle to grave and offers much insight into how their formative years shaped the destiny of modern Europe. Victoria and her husband Albert raised their elder daughters with the expectation that they would marry into other royal families and help spread their father's conception of a constitutional monarchy across the Continent. Despite (or perhaps because of) their earnest efforts, quite the opposite happened. In many ways, the younger daughters had an even more difficult task. They were expected to devote their lives to the service of their demanding widowed mother and each had to struggle for a measure of independence, including the right to marry. All five did eventually marry and several bred offspring that would rule throught the courts of Europe in the early 20th century.
Packard is an adept historical biographer, and he skillfully compares and contrasts the lives of the 5 daughters. His research has been extensive. Given the voluminous correspondence between Victoria and her daughters, this was no doubt a daunting task. However, he frequently opines as to what any one of the daughters was thinking in response to a given incident; it is difficult todistinguish which come from his suppositions and which are based upon actual statements in the historical records. In the same vein, Packard tends to state his congectures about how the daughters might have changed history as given facts. For example, he is quite definitive in stating that if Vicki had been less demanding of "Willy" (Kaiser Wilhelm II) during his childhood, the course of the 20th centrury would have been drastically different. While that might be true, there's also reason to believe that Willy's mental instability and Bismark's political maneuvering would have yield the same results regardless. Nevertheless, this is a thoroughly readable and very enlightening book.

a fantastic way to learn more about history
By Atheen
This was a fantastic way to learn more about the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. I have to admit that although I have a master's degree in history, my major focus has always been ancient history, particularly ancient Near Eastern history (I was one of those people who felt that "modern history" meant everything after 1200 BC.--yes, BC.). Only just lately have I begun to follow up intriguing trails through other periods. Some time ago, I began to realize that one could really gain incredible insight into the events of an era by studying peripherals: the history of countries peripheral to the main stage, side issues like trade, crafts, and long distance contacts, and the women and others behind the main historical figures, etc. Jerrold Packard's book Victoria's Daughters seemed to be just the book I needed to learn about a period in time about which I knew next to nothing, the late 19th Century.
At first it seemed as though the book would be more about Queen Victoria herself than about her daughters. As I read on, though, I realized that the oddity of Victoria's succession to the throne had much to do with the lives of her daughters, as did her early life and her own upbringing. Furthermore, it is against her long life and protracted reign that not only the events in her daughters' lives were measured and chronicled but those of most of the lives of the world's population. There was a reason that most of the 19th Century was labeled "the Victorian era!"
In the past I had given very little thought about the connections that existed throughout European history or about what actually brought about the events that occurred during the turn of the century. I knew of course that the Tsarina of Russia was "Victoria's granddaughter" and a "Prussian princess," but I hardly gave thought to what that really meant. Nicholas and Alexandra were charismatic historical figures in their own right. They were a fairy tale couple, much in love, with a cozy little family living the life of a Russian folktale, and their poetic tale came to a tragic but colorful and certainly very memorable finish. End of story, or so it seemed to me. One knows about World War I, I suppose, and all the people that died in trenches of disease and exposure and mustard gas and enemy fire. One has heard of Bismark and Wilhelm II and Lord Mountbattan, but they're all just interesting names, names one memorizes to answer our world history tests, right? Not when one reads Mr. Packard's story of the children of Queen Victoria.
Each of the daughters, Victoria, Alice, Helena, Louise, and Beatrice had a unique relationship with their mother. Because of whom and what she was, Victoria's was not a particularly warm and maternal presence in their lives. When she was a presence at all, she was distant, self-centered, imperious, and controlling. Unfortunately some of this early relationship translated into problems with parent-child interactions when the girls had children of their own. Lest anyone think that women do not have an impact on the course of history because they don't lead armies into battle--often anyway--one only need read about the relationships between some of these women and their children. That between Victoria, "Vicky," and her eldest son, Willy--later Wilhelm II--will quickly disabuse one of the notion.
Furthermore, the five girls were married into some of the key families of Europe. The titles of each and their in-laws read like a who's who of European nobility, and their sons and daughters became kings, queens, and dukes, many of whom ended up on opposite sides of wars in Europe during the late 19th and early 20th century. The tangled web of personal relationships, treaties, and ambitions ultimately brought about World War I.
I was especially entranced with the intimate detail woven into the stories of each of the women. The author mined diaries, extensive family correspondence, and biographies written about each to create very personal characterizations. The reader becomes as engaged in the story of their lives as in those of fictional characters; one just does feels connected.
FOR THOSE WRITING PAPERS: in history, anthropology, political science, sociology. One might use this book to discuss the limitations of women of the upper classes at the time and their effects on history. One might look at individuals like Alice, who became a follower of the practices of Florence Nightengale, or her sister Louise, who was an accomplished and professional sculptor, who attempted to break out of the social mold of the time to create an identity and existence of their own. What types of role models did they make for others? What changes did they bring about in society? How did they set the stage for our own era? Might the events of WWI been less likely to have happened if the relationships between countries had been based on less personal grounds? Did the relationships between these women and their children and spouses affect the course of events significantly? Or would they have happened anyway? Would they have happened for the same reasons? How was this era a transitional time?

Twice Blessed: Everything You Need To Know About Having A Second Child-- Preparing Yourself, Your Marriage, And Your Firstborn For A New Fa

Joan Leonard's Twice Blessed offers everything you need to know about having a second child--preparing yourself, your marriage, and your firstborn for a new family of four.

Just when you thought you were finally adjusting to being a parent--your stretch marks have faded and you've packed away your nursing bras and maternity clothes--you decide to have a second child. And although by now you may feel like a parenting expert, the second time around brings its own set of questions, quandaries, and chaos, from tighter finances to new routines.

Drawing on the expertise of pediatricians, gynecologists, and family therapists, as well as the anecdotes of mothers everywhere (tips from the trenches), this book includes both the psychological and physiological aspects of a second birth. It covers how to prepare yourself for a different pregnancy and birth, your marriage for another dramatic change, and your child for a new brother or sister. With warmth, inspiration, and humor, it looks carefully at the brand new family of four and what to expect as it evolves during the first weeks, first months, and first year.

Amazon.com Review
Less time, more demands, jealous siblings, displaced spouses, bigger bills, and bigger automobiles: given all these cons, why on earth would any sane couple consider having more than one child? Author Joan Leonard deals readers a rather loaded deck of cards as she succinctly describes the joys--but mostly the burdens--of "welcoming" a second child to the family. Despite its sweet title, this little book takes a rather acrid look at the unique challenges second-time moms and dads encounter. Luckily for the reader, Leonard presents plenty of advice from pediatricians, gynecologists, family therapists, and parents who have been through it themselves. Topics cover changes couples face during pregnancy, birth, and all of baby number two's first year.

A confessed firstborn herself, Leonard openly admits she did not enjoy being knocked off her proverbial pedestal when "The Other One," her own baby sister, arrived. Perhaps that's why this former contributing editor to Parent's Magazine and author of Tales from Toddler Hell seems to take such glee in reporting the many stresses and strains caused by adding to the family. Don't expect any gloppy, saccharin-tainted anecdotes from Leonard's contributing parents, either. Their "Tips from the Trenches" offer important food for thought about maternity leave and treating your spouse as a mate rather than as a business partner. Some of Leonard's own advice about appeasing the oldest child--like asking if the newborn can wear his or her outgrown clothes rather than just making it happen--lean a little too far toward spoiling. Most helpful are Leonard's chapters on assessing the first labor and delivery and taking steps to ensure a better one the second time around and her final chapter on effective family management. --Liane Thomas

Good Advice and Very Easy to Read.
By K. Scruggs
Reading other reviews of this book, I had considered not purchasing this book. But I decided to go ahead and take a chance since many reviews did say that she was brutally honest.

I am glad I did.

From the first few pages I realized that this was a good book. It was easy to read, the author had a great voice and I loved the tips throughout the book.

The book offers unvarnished advice on what will happen, what could happen and what might happen when a second child is introduced into the mix. Some things I knew intuitively. Some things I never considered.

For example, Ms. Leonard suggests making any changes to the first child's routine long before the second child comes into the picture to minimize the stess on the first child. As it a time up upheaval for the entire family, as much stability as you can give will help the first child adjust.

She tells us that jealousy is a normal reaction for the first born. To help relieve some of the jealousy, make sure that you allocate some time each day to give the child uninterupted, unorganized time with the first born.

I will say that I always read three books on any subject to give me multiple points of view and found this book to be good, but not the best I read on having a second child. That distinction is given to Judy Dunn's From One Child to Two. In comparison, this book offered sound advice often through personal interviews that really drove home the author's points. But in comparison, Ms. Leonard's book included less information than Ms. Dunn's book. Thus if I was only going to read one book on the subject, I would suggest From One Child to Two. It is a denser book that takes more effort to read, but gives you much more to think about.

Twice Blessed is a great read! I couldn't put down this informative, FUNNY, comforting and chock-full-of-life stories book. Joan Leonard writes from the heart and offers her first-hand experiences with joy and tears. The questions I had about my second pregnancy, preparing my first child for a new brother or sister, life with two children were all answered here. You'll be much wiser (and feel a lot less alone!), as you read about the true happiness of a new life with baby number two. A must read!

Totally Depressing
By blu2rain
I got this book shortly after having my first child. We were planning on a second as soon as it seemed a good time. To me, the author only wrote this book to let the world know how horrible it was for her growing up. She tells you how spoiled she is, and how she couldn't stand having a sibling. From some of the things she writes in this book, she makes you feel horrible for even wanting to have another child, like you are selfish.
I will, of course, say that I did like some of the quotes from other parents, they were helpful. All in all though, it isn't worth to waste the money to listen to a women blather about how she felt as the older sibling. It goes on to show you also, the statistics of how horrible your marriage will be, how likely you are to fail, and how much you will hate it.
All in all, if everything that she says in this book is even REMOTELY true, all the statistics and what not, then there wouldn't be so many people with more than one child, living a full and loving marriage and having a good time. Yes, it is hard work, but it seems this author doesn't even want you to try. Thumbs down.
